If your backpack zipper keeps getting stuck, first empty the bag and inspect the zipper instead of pulling harder. A slider that drags, a zipper that closes and then splits, a missing pull tab, and damaged teeth each need a different fix. Start with the symptom below; cleaning only helps when the zipper chain itself is intact.
Before you try a repair, inspect the zipper
- Empty the backpack. A full or compressed pocket can put tension on the zipper and make it harder to move.
- Lay the zipper flat in good light. Check the full length for fabric caught in the slider, grit around the teeth or coil, missing or bent teeth, torn zipper tape, and visible slider damage.
- Identify what is failing. Does the slider drag while moving, does the zipper open again behind it, is the pull tab missing, or has the slider come off its track? Note whether the zipper has coil or molded-plastic teeth; replacement parts must be compatible with its type and size.
Do not force a jam. Pulling hard can make the problem worse, and repeated pulling is not a substitute for checking the chain and tape.
If the zipper drags or catches, clean it first
When the teeth appear present and aligned, look for trapped fabric or debris. Gently move the slider back from the snag, free any fabric without tugging, and brush away visible dirt. iFixit describes dirt and debris lodged around the slider as a common cause of sticking and recommends a nylon brush for coil or plastic teeth: iFixit’s stuck zipper guide.
After cleaning, try moving the slider gently. If the backpack maker allows it, a small amount of suitable zipper lubricant may help a zipper that still drags. Follow the bag’s care instructions. Lubricant may reduce friction, but it cannot repair missing teeth, a damaged slider, or torn tape.

If the zipper closes but separates behind the slider
A zipper that closes and then opens again may have a slider that no longer grips both sides of the chain properly. Kipling and Helly Hansen describe gently squeezing the slider with pliers in small increments. Test the zipper after each minimal adjustment; too much pressure can distort or damage the slider.
Stop if the slider cracks or deforms, or if it still will not keep the teeth engaged. The next step may be slider replacement, but the replacement must match the zipper’s construction and size. Do not assume a generic repair kit will fit. Helly Hansen describes kits with replacement sliders, pulls, and tools, but compatibility still needs to be checked: Helly Hansen’s zipper repair guide.

If the pull tab is missing
The pull tab is the part you hold; its absence does not necessarily mean the slider has failed. If the slider still moves and closes the zipper, attach a replacement pull tab or use a thin zip tie temporarily as a loop, as Kipling suggests. Make sure it will not snag on the backpack or obstruct the slider. A new pull will not fix a damaged slider.
If the slider came off or the teeth will not mesh
A slider that has come off one side, or teeth that no longer line up, may need to be repositioned and secured with a reinforced stop. Avoid cutting sound teeth or zipper tape unless you can safely complete the repair and resew a reinforced stop. If you are unsure how the slider should be reattached, take the bag to a tailor or bag repair shop rather than risking further damage.

Cleaning or lubrication is for a zipper whose chain is intact. A missing tooth, damaged coil, torn tape, or repeated failure after a slider adjustment points to a repair beyond basic maintenance. A repair professional can assess whether the slider, zipper chain, or entire sewn-in zipper needs replacement. Choose the repair by the symptom
