Start by finding the music files in File Explorer: open the Music folder, then search File Explorer or Windows Search if they are not there. Finding the files on your PC is not the same as importing Windows Media Player Legacy’s library into the modern Media Player app; Microsoft’s documentation does not establish that the apps share a library database.

Find the music files on your PC

  1. Open File Explorer and select Music from Home or the left navigation pane. In Windows 11 version 22H2 and later, Music is one of the known folders pinned there by default. Those folders do not appear under This PC by default. Microsoft’s File Explorer guide explains the layout.
  2. Search if the folder is empty or incomplete. Use the search box in File Explorer Home, or open a likely drive or folder and search there. To locate MP3 files specifically, search for *.mp3. This finds files with the MP3 extension, not WMA, WAV, or other audio formats. Microsoft documents searching from File Explorer and gives *.mp3 as an example query: Find your files and apps in Windows and Find lost files after upgrading Windows.
  3. Check other likely locations or formats. If you remember where the collection was stored, search that folder or drive. Windows Media Player 12 supports multiple formats, but its format list is specific to that version of the player; consult Microsoft’s supported file types page if you need to identify a particular format.

Why the modern app may not show the same library

A music file lives in a folder on disk. A media player’s library view is a separate view of media that the app knows about. So finding a track in File Explorer confirms that the file exists, but does not by itself prove that it has been added to the modern Media Player app.

Microsoft distinguishes Windows Media Player Legacy from the modern Media Player app, but its guidance does not say that the modern app automatically imports Legacy’s library database or uses exactly the same indexed folders. Once you locate the files, open Media Player and check its current library controls or help for your installed version; do not assume that the Legacy library view will appear unchanged.

If you used Libraries in File Explorer, that is another separate feature. To display them, Microsoft’s File Explorer instructions give the path View > Navigation pane > Show libraries. Showing a Windows Library does not add a folder to a media player.

If Windows Search cannot find the music

Windows Search can search indexed locations. Windows offers two indexing modes: Classic, which includes Music by default, and Enhanced, which indexes all user folders and files and may use more system resources. To review or add indexed locations, go to Settings > Privacy & security > Search > Customize search locations. Indexing a newly added location can take time. See Microsoft’s Search indexing guide.

If a location is not indexed or the search still misses files, use File Explorer to open the relevant drive or folder and search there. Also check whether the music is in a format other than MP3 if you searched only for *.mp3.

Where Windows Media Player Legacy saves CD rips

If you ripped CDs with Windows Media Player Legacy, check the Music folder first. Microsoft says Legacy saves ripped music there by default, though you can change the destination in the player’s Rip settings. This default applies to music ripped with Legacy, not necessarily to music copied, downloaded, or managed by other software. See Microsoft’s instructions for burning and ripping CDs.

Choose between Media Player and Legacy

Use the modern Media Player app if you want the current app experience, including Microsoft’s recommended option for modern video features such as 4K. Windows Media Player Legacy may be useful when you specifically need its media-library or playlist features. These are separate app paths; do not treat Legacy’s database as a guaranteed migration route into Media Player.

Legacy availability depends on the Windows 11 edition. On editions that offer it, Microsoft says to install it through Settings > System > Optional Features > View features, then search for Windows Media Player Legacy and add it. You can also search Start for the app to see whether it is already installed. Check Microsoft’s Windows Media Player troubleshooting guidance; optional-feature availability varies by edition.

On Windows 10/11 N editions, media technologies are omitted by default. Microsoft makes the Media Feature Pack available as an Optional Feature, and a restart is required after installation. Details are in Microsoft’s Media Feature Pack guidance.
