The steps depend on your edition: in Java Edition, open the world and run /seed in chat; in Bedrock Edition, find the seed in the existing world’s edit or options screen. For a Bedrock Realm, you may need to download the world to a local copy first.
First, identify your Minecraft edition
Java and Bedrock use different ways to show a world’s seed. Use the route that matches the edition and where the save is hosted.

Find the seed in a Java Edition save
- Load the world whose seed you want to check.
- Open chat and enter
/seed, then submit the command. - Read the seed in the chat output. Minecraft documented an option to copy the output in its 18W19B snapshot announcement.
If the command is unavailable, the server or world setup may not grant you the command access needed. Permissions depend on the particular setup, so check with the server administrator rather than assuming the command behaves the same in every world.
Find the seed in a Bedrock Edition save
- Return to the worlds list.
- Open the existing world’s edit or options screen.
- Look for the seed field and read or copy its value.
Bedrock’s interface varies between platforms and versions, so use the general world-options screen rather than relying on a particular button name. The cited community-maintained reference describes the seed as visible after world creation, but not editable there. See the reference.

Find the seed of a Bedrock Realm
If you cannot see the seed while playing on the Realm, download the relevant world to your device and inspect the downloaded local copy’s options. Minecraft’s support instructions describe downloading a Realm world; the downloaded world is added to your worlds list. Download a world from your Realm.
The guidance that a Bedrock Realm’s seed is not visible during play comes from a community-maintained reference, not the official download instructions. The official instructions establish how to make a local copy, but do not themselves promise that the seed will be revealed by downloading it. Community reference.

Finding a seed is not the same as changing it
These steps retrieve the seed associated with an existing world. In Bedrock, the cited reference says the seed field is visible but not editable after the world has been created. Reference.

When the usual route does not work
- You’re using Bedrock but tried
/seed: The documented command route here is for Java Edition. Check the Bedrock world’s edit or options screen instead. - You cannot run
/seedin Java: Your server or world may restrict command access; ask its administrator about permissions. - The world is hosted on a Bedrock Realm: Try downloading the relevant world as a local copy and inspect its options.
- You are considering extracting data from the save file: That is a specialist fallback, not a universal procedure. File locations and methods are not established for every platform here, so do not assume one editor or path works across devices.
