To find out whether a NAS backup job is causing Plex to buffer, compare playback timestamps with NAS activity, then pause or reschedule one suspected job at a time and repeat the same playback test. A job is a credible cause only if the timing and resource evidence point to it and the buffering improves when that job is removed from the test. Plex says buffering can also result from an inadequate network connection or a server that cannot transcode fast enough, so overlap alone is not proof.

1. Record exactly when buffering happens

Choose a repeatable test: use the same Plex client, media file, playback quality, and network path each time where practical. Record when playback starts buffering and when it recovers. Note whether you are watching locally or remotely, and whether Plex is using Direct Play, Direct Stream, or transcoding. The requested streaming quality and playback mode can change the network and processing demands, so comparisons between different titles or settings may not be meaningful. Plex explains transcoding and playback modes.

2. Map scheduled jobs against the symptom

Make a short timeline of the playback event and every workload active at that time. Include NAS backup and sync tasks, cloud transfers, and other scheduled heavy operations visible in the NAS interface. Also check Plex’s own scheduled maintenance: library updates, metadata refreshes, database operations, and thumbnail generation can overlap with a backup. Plex describes video preview thumbnail generation as intensive, so a resource spike during playback may not be caused by the backup. Plex video preview thumbnails and Plex scheduled maintenance and scanning.

Write down each candidate task’s start and end time alongside the buffering times. If the task history does not provide enough detail, observe the next run rather than assuming the schedule tells the whole story.

3. Watch NAS resource activity during playback

On Synology DSM

Open Resource Monitor and review the Performance and Task Manager views while reproducing the problem. Synology’s Hyper Backup troubleshooting guidance recommends checking CPU use and, when utilization is extremely high, identifying the service or package in Task Manager’s Service or Processes tabs. Menu names and visibility can vary by DSM version. Synology guidance for high CPU utilization during Hyper Backup.

On other NAS platforms

Use the platform’s equivalent resource monitor and job history. Synology’s menu labels are not universal; exact steps depend on the NAS model and software version.

Capture CPU utilization, disk activity, and network activity around the buffering interval. If the NAS offers per-process data, record it with timestamps so you can distinguish the backup from Plex or another service. No single metric proves causation: CPU pressure matters especially when Plex is transcoding, while backup reads, writes, and transfers can also compete with media access or network capacity.

4. Check whether Plex is falling behind on transcoding

If Plex is transcoding, inspect its server log for the playback attempt. Plex’s buffering guidance says to enable Verbose logging temporarily, open the Plex Media Server.log covering the test, and search for speed =>. Turn Verbose logging off after collecting the relevant entry. Plex interprets the reported transcode speed this way:

Log speed Plex’s interpretation
Exactly 1.0 The server is transcoding in real time.
Greater than 1.0 The server is transcoding fast enough for the stream.
Less than 1.0 The server is not transcoding fast enough.
Average around 1.3 or greater Plex says this is sufficient for the attempted transcode.

These are Plex’s diagnostic interpretations, not universal performance guarantees. The guidance is from a Plex support page last modified in 2019. NAS processors can be limited, and transcoding can be CPU-intensive. Plex’s buffering and transcoding guidance and Plex NAS compatibility information.

If playback is Direct Play and the log does not indicate a slow transcode, network or storage contention may be more plausible, but verify those signals rather than treating playback mode alone as a diagnosis. Plex also identifies client-side limits as a possible factor for some TVs and consoles.

5. Test one backup job at a time

  1. Choose one likely candidate. Start with a job that overlaps the buffering interval and coincides with a resource spike.
  2. Pause it temporarily or move its schedule. Use the NAS backup interface, taking care not to jeopardize an incomplete backup or retention requirements.
  3. Repeat the same playback test. Keep the client, media, quality, and network path as similar as possible; note resource use and whether buffering changes.
  4. Resume the job and confirm completion. If practical, repeat the comparison to see whether buffering returns when that job runs.
  5. Test another candidate separately. Changing several jobs at once makes it harder to identify which one mattered.

A repeatable pattern—buffering during a job, improvement when that job is paused, and recurrence when it runs again—is stronger evidence of a contribution than schedule overlap by itself. This comparison does not establish that the job is the only cause.

6. Use the evidence to choose the next step

  • CPU rises during the backup and Plex transcode speed falls below real time: CPU contention is plausible. Confirm with the one-job pause comparison before changing schedules.
  • Disk activity rises during stalls without substantial CPU pressure: investigate storage contention or disk health with the NAS manufacturer’s diagnostics.
  • Network activity is the limiting signal: check the network path and requested playback quality. Plex identifies inadequate network capacity as a broad cause of buffering.
  • Buffering continues while backups are paused: look at transcoding speed, client playback limits, Plex maintenance, and other background tasks rather than continuing to blame the backup.

Plex’s general troubleshooting guide frames the main causes as a network connection that cannot support the requested stream or content that cannot be transcoded fast enough. Plex: transcoding media and buffering.

7. Reschedule only after identifying a likely cause

If the controlled comparison implicates a backup, schedule it for an off-peak period. Synology recommends off-peak scheduling for Hyper Backup and notes that splitting tasks containing many shared folders and files can be considered. If measurements point specifically to bandwidth, check whether NAS traffic-control rules limit backup throughput; raising a limit may increase contention with Plex and is not a diagnostic first step.
