To find what’s slowing down your Windows PC, check what it is doing while the slowdown happens—not just what is installed. Note whether the problem occurs at startup, in one app, during multitasking, or all the time; then use Task Manager to look for sustained CPU, memory, or disk pressure. Those readings point to areas to investigate, not a diagnosis on their own.
First, identify when the PC is slow
The timing helps narrow the search. A delay at sign-in points toward startup activity; trouble limited to one program may be app-specific; sluggishness across several apps may involve resource pressure or broader system conditions. A low-storage warning is another clue. If the problem began after an update or installation, note that timing, but do not assume it proves the cause.
- At startup: Windows takes a long time to become responsive after you sign in.
- In one app: A particular program launches slowly, freezes, or becomes sluggish.
- During multitasking: The PC slows when several apps or browser tabs are open.
- All the time: Windows and multiple apps feel slow, even during ordinary use.
- Low-space warning: The system drive is nearly full or Windows has trouble installing updates.
Microsoft identifies limited storage, too many background or startup apps, outdated software, and hardware that no longer meets current needs as possible causes of a slow Windows device. Symptoms alone do not establish which one applies to your PC. Microsoft’s performance guidance covers Windows 10 and 11.
Use Task Manager while the slowdown is happening
Task Manager is the first useful built-in check because it shows resource use in context. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc, then inspect Processes and Performance while the PC feels slow. Labels can vary slightly by Windows version or update.

Check Processes
In Processes, look at the CPU, Memory, and Disk columns. Notice whether one app or process is using a large share of a resource, and whether the activity continues while the computer is sluggish. A momentary spike during an app launch is different from sustained pressure during ordinary use.
If you recognize an app you do not need, close it normally and see whether the same workload improves. Avoid ending unfamiliar processes, especially Windows processes: stopping the wrong task can disrupt system functions without revealing the underlying cause.
Check Performance
Open Performance to see whether CPU, memory, or disk activity remains high during the symptom. Consider what you were doing at the time and compare the reading with the PC’s behavior. High use is a clue to investigate—not proof that the busiest process is defective or that the component itself needs replacing.

Record what was busy and what you were doing, then repeat the same workload after any change. That gives you a more useful comparison than making several changes at once.

If startup is the main problem, review Startup apps
In Task Manager, open Startup apps and review what launches when you sign in. Disable only apps you recognize and do not need at startup; an app you disable may still be available to open manually. Change one item at a time and check whether sign-in improves.
Microsoft’s startup-impact labels are based on measured CPU and disk activity for the startup app. They are not a universal rating of how fast your whole PC should be:

| Startup impact | Microsoft’s stated threshold |
|---|---|
| Low | Less than 300 ms of total CPU usage and less than 292 KB of total disk usage. |
| Medium | Less than one second but more than 300 ms of total CPU usage, or less than 3 MB but more than 292 KB of disk usage. |
| High | More than one second of total CPU usage or more than 3 MB of disk usage. |
These thresholds are Microsoft’s current guidance retrieved in 2026. A high-impact label identifies an app with notable startup activity; it does not, by itself, show that the app is the cause of a particular delay. See Microsoft’s instructions for configuring startup applications.
Check free space and routine maintenance
Low available storage can affect performance and interfere with Windows updates. Check the available space on the drive that contains Windows in File Explorer or in Settings under System > Storage (the exact labels can vary). If space is low, review temporary files and remove only items you understand.
Recommended Free Tools
Windows provides Storage Sense and temporary-file cleanup tools. Use those rather than manually deleting unfamiliar files from Windows or other system folders. Microsoft explains storage options in its Storage Sense guidance.

Also check for available Windows updates through Settings. If malware is plausible—for example, the slowdown appeared alongside other suspicious behavior—run a quick scan with Windows Security. These are reasonable checks, but neither an update nor a scan should be treated as proof of the cause unless the symptom changes in a way you can verify.

If ordinary checks suggest background software may be interfering, Microsoft’s clean-boot procedure can help isolate third-party services and startup programs. It is a diagnostic step, not a general-purpose speed tweak: some functionality may be temporarily unavailable, and changing advanced startup settings carelessly can make the PC unusable.
- Read Microsoft’s clean-boot instructions for your Windows version before changing settings.
- Record which services or startup items you change so you can restore normal startup.
- Follow Microsoft’s steps, then repeat the task that previously caused the slowdown.
- If the problem changes, use the clean-boot process to narrow down the conflicting software, then restore normal startup and adjust only the item you have identified.
A managed work or school PC may have network policies that prevent these steps. Do not change options you do not understand; consult your administrator if the computer is managed.

Escalate only after the simple checks
If the PC remains slow, use Windows recovery guidance to choose an option appropriate to the problem. Recovery options differ in how disruptive they are, and some can remove files or apps. Back up important files before using an option that may cause data loss. Start with Microsoft’s Windows recovery options and read the effects of the specific option before proceeding.
Persistent resource pressure can also reflect hardware limits, particularly on an older PC. Microsoft does not set a universal RAM or SSD upgrade recommendation for an unknown computer. Before buying a part, identify the exact PC model and verify compatibility; if the machine remains constrained after diagnosis and ordinary fixes, a software cleanup may not be enough.
Windows 10 support status
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Windows 10 PCs still run, but Microsoft says they no longer receive free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes after that date. This lifecycle fact does not identify what is slowing a PC, but it matters when considering whether an older system should remain in use. See Microsoft’s performance guidance.
