You can check websites in bulk without a Wappalyzer subscription by using another technology database with exports or batch API access, or by using free lookups for a smaller list. BuiltWith documents multi-domain lookups and background bulk jobs; StackScan advertises technology searches, domain exports, and bulk enrichment on higher plans. Neither option is established here as a free, like-for-like replacement, so compare quotas, data freshness, and costs before processing a large list.
Choose the right kind of lookup
Website technology detectors infer a site’s stack from signals they can observe. Results can include content management systems, ecommerce platforms, analytics tools, frameworks, and infrastructure. They are not guaranteed inventories: detections depend on what is exposed on the pages checked and how current the provider’s data is.
- A short list: Try free lookups or browser checks before paying for bulk access.
- A prospect or research list: Look for domain exports, CSV upload, and clear limits on the number of domains.
- Recurring or automated checks: Compare API access, batch handling, output formats, and the cost of rerunning scans.
For large lists, first establish whether a result comes from an indexed database or a fresh scan. A fresh scan may cost more or take longer, while cached data can be older. Neither method should be assumed to find every technology on every site.
Options for checking many websites
| Option | Bulk workflow | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Wappalyzer free account and lookup | The lookup page accepts CSV or TXT uploads of up to 100,000 URLs. Cached results count as one lookup per URL; live results count as five, according to Wappalyzer. | Wappalyzer’s pricing page lists 50 lookups and email verifications per month and five website alerts for the free account. Its pricing FAQ says API access, lead lists, and CRM integrations require a plan. Check which bulk features your account can use before relying on them. |
| BuiltWith Domain API | Documents multi-domain lookup, high-throughput lookup, and bulk jobs. Large batches may run asynchronously and return a job ID. Output formats include JSON, XML, CSV, and XLSX. | BuiltWith’s home page reported 127,700+ technologies in 2026 and technology-trend data going back to January 1985. These are vendor-published figures, not independent measurements. |
| StackScan | Advertises technology, keyword, and location search, domain exports, and bulk enrichment/API access on higher plans. | In 2026, StackScan advertised coverage of 399M+ websites and 55,000+ technologies, with plans starting at $39 per month. These are vendor claims; verify current pricing and plan entitlements directly. |
Wappalyzer is included as a point of comparison, not as a required subscription: its free account has a published monthly allowance, but its API and prospect-list workflows require a plan. The reviewed sources do not establish that another provider offers equivalent bulk volume for free.

How to evaluate a provider before processing your list
- Check the volume limit. Confirm the maximum URLs per upload or API request, how oversized jobs are handled, and what happens when you reach a quota.
- Check freshness and scan depth. Ask whether results are cached or live, when records were last verified, and whether the service checks one page or follows internal links. Wappalyzer says its cached results have been verified within the last 30 days and are more complete, while live results are more up to date. That is Wappalyzer’s description of its own service.
- Check the output and workflow. Confirm that the plan includes the export format, API, CRM integration, or repeat-check capability you actually need.
- Calculate cost for your actual use. Include monthly allowances, credits per URL, live-scan multipliers, plan minimums, and whether credits expire.
- Test a small representative sample. Include domains whose technology stacks you already know. Compare detections and data age with your intended use before submitting the full list.
Understand the difference between a database result and a live scan
An indexed lookup returns information a provider already has on file; its value depends partly on how recently that domain was checked. A live scan checks the site now, but a quick scan may inspect less of it. Wappalyzer’s API documentation says a live single-page scan is faster but less complete than a recursive crawl, and that a recursive live crawl can take up to 15 minutes. Its documentation also lists one lookup credit per URL for a cached lookup and five credits for a live recursive lookup.
Those figures describe Wappalyzer’s documented behavior, not a universal pricing standard. Check each provider’s own credit rules and scan methodology. Do not compare providers on accuracy based on advertised database size alone; the sources cited here do not establish an independent accuracy ranking.

When a few manual checks are enough
If you only need answers for a handful of sites, start with the providers’ available free lookups and browser-based checks rather than buying access to a large dataset. Treat a detector’s result as evidence about visible technologies, not proof that its list is exhaustive. For a larger list, use a small sample to confirm that its freshness, fields, and export format fit your task before committing to a paid plan.
