The fastest way to find a village depends on your Minecraft edition. Bedrock and Java use different /locate targets, so copying a command from the other edition can produce a syntax error or search for the wrong structure.
Use minecraft:village on Bedrock, and #minecraft:village on Java. If you are playing without commands, search village-generating biomes in the Overworld or use a seed map configured for your exact edition and game version.
Before you start: check your edition
Bedrock Edition includes Minecraft for Windows, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, iPhone, iPad, Android, and other Bedrock platforms. Java Edition is the PC version distributed through the Minecraft Launcher.
The commands are not interchangeable:
| Edition | Village command |
|---|---|
| Bedrock | /locate structure minecraft:village |
| Java | /locate structure #minecraft:village |
The #minecraft:village value on Java is a structure tag covering the biome-specific village structures. On Java, commands such as minecraft:village_plains are also valid, but they locate only that particular village variant.

Method 1: Find a village with a command
This is the most reliable method if commands are allowed in your world. Commands search for the nearest matching structure in your current dimension, so stand in the Overworld before running the search.
Bedrock Edition
- Open the world settings and select the Game tab.
- Turn on Allow Cheats. In a multiplayer world or Realm, you need the appropriate operator or command permissions instead.
- Return to the world and open chat.
- Enter /locate structure minecraft:village.
- Submit the command and read the coordinates in the response.
- Teleport using the reported coordinates, replacing the placeholders with the actual values: /teleport <x> <y> <z>.
Bedrock also supports a final Boolean argument that limits the search to newly generated chunks: /locate structure minecraft:village true.
Normally, the final argument is omitted and the default is false. Use true only when you specifically want the search restricted to new chunks.
Java Edition
- Enable commands when creating the world by turning on Allow Commands.
- For an existing single-player world, open World Options and enable Allow Commands.
- If that option is not available, pause the game, choose Open to LAN, select Settings for Other Players, and turn on Allow Commands. This enables commands for the current session.
- Open chat and run /locate structure #minecraft:village.
Java also accepts individual biome-specific structure IDs:
- /locate structure minecraft:village_plains
- /locate structure minecraft:village_desert
- /locate structure minecraft:village_savanna
- /locate structure minecraft:village_snowy
- /locate structure minecraft:village_taiga
Use the tag when you want the nearest village of any supported type. Use a specific ID when you want, for example, the nearest desert village.
Teleport carefully
The coordinates returned by /locate identify the generated structure location. They do not necessarily mark a house entrance, the village center, a flat block, or a safe place to stand. A direct teleport can leave you inside terrain, over a drop, or at an inconvenient Y coordinate.
Rank #2
If the X and Z values are useful but the suggested Y value is unsafe, teleport near the location at a sensible height, inspect the terrain, or travel to the coordinates normally. Do not assume that arriving at the reported point means you will appear inside a building.
Method 2: Find one by exploring
Villages are generated as part of the world, not created later simply because you walk close to an area. Search the Overworld, concentrating on biomes where villages can naturally generate.

Useful areas to check include:
- Plains
- Desert
- Savanna
- Taiga
- Snowy plains and other snowy village areas
- Meadows
Biome names and generation details can vary by edition and version. The internal Bedrock files use names such as ice_plains and cold_taiga; those are implementation names, not necessarily the labels shown in the current game interface.
Villages do not generate in every biome. Searching jungles, swamps, most ocean biomes, the Nether, or the End is not a practical way to find one. If you are trying to locate a village naturally, move through broad, open terrain and climb hills or use a high viewpoint to scan for houses, paths, farms, and campfires.
Exploration tips
- Travel during the day so hostile mobs do not distract you.
- Carry food, a bed, blocks, and a boat or other travel method.
- Mark explored areas with torches, coordinates, or a map.
- Search open plains and deserts first because buildings are easier to see there.
- If you find a village, record its coordinates before leaving.
A normal vanilla cartographer map is not a general village-finder. Cartographer explorer maps point to destinations such as woodland mansions or ocean monuments, not ordinary villages.
Method 3: Use a seed-based village map
Seed-based map tools can show predicted village locations before you travel. This is useful when commands are disabled or when you want to plan a long-term world.

- Find your world seed. On Java, run /seed; the command displays the seed and allows the result to be copied.
- Open a reputable seed-location map or seed-finder tool.
- Enter the seed exactly as shown.
- Select the correct edition: Java or Bedrock.
- Select the exact Minecraft version used to create or generate the area.
- Enable the village structure layer and inspect the coordinates.
- Travel to a selected location or use the coordinates with /teleport if commands are enabled.
Edition and version selection matters. Java and Bedrock do not use identical structure-generation algorithms, and structure placement can change between game versions. A Java map set to the wrong release can show coordinates that do not match your world.
Seed tools predict structures created by world generation. They will not show a village that someone added manually with commands, a structure block, a behavior pack, or a world-editing tool.
Why the village command may fail
“No structure was found”
/locate searches the current dimension. If you run the command in the Nether or End, it cannot find an Overworld village there. Return to the Overworld and try again.
“Unknown command” or a permissions error
Commands are unavailable when cheats or commands are disabled, or when you do not have sufficient multiplayer permissions. On a server or Realm owned by someone else, ask the owner or an operator to grant access.

Check the edition before changing the command. These two commands are not universal alternatives:
- Bedrock: /locate structure minecraft:village
- Java: /locate structure #minecraft:village
minecraft:village_plains is a valid Java-specific structure ID, but it is not the universal command for both editions.

The coordinates do not contain a visible village
Confirm that you entered the coordinates correctly and that you are in the same world and dimension. Then search around the location rather than checking only the exact teleport destination. Terrain can hide buildings, and a structure’s reported location is not guaranteed to be a safe landing block or a building entrance.
A seed map predicts a village that is not there
Verify the seed, edition, and game version. Also check whether the location is outside the area currently generated in your world. An outdated map or a map configured for Java instead of Bedrock can produce incorrect expectations.
Can a behavior pack stop villages from generating?
On Bedrock, village generation is controlled through the minecraft:village_type biome component. A behavior pack that removes or changes this component can prevent villages from appearing in new worlds or in new chunks affected by the pack.
This does not remove villages that already exist in previously generated chunks. World-generation changes generally need to be active before the relevant terrain is created to affect it.
Do abandoned villages count?
The village locate command does not separate ordinary villages from abandoned, also called zombie, villages. It searches for the village structure type; it does not provide a separate abandoned-village target. If the generated structure is abandoned, you will discover that when you arrive.

On Bedrock, enabling Allow Cheats permanently disables achievements in that world, even if you later turn cheats off. Consider using a copy of the world if achievements matter to you.

Java’s temporary Open to LAN command setting is a session-based option and does not apply Bedrock’s permanent achievement-disable rule. Server permissions and world settings still determine whether commands are available.
Quickest answer
| Situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| Bedrock with cheats | Run /locate structure minecraft:village. |
| Java with commands | Run /locate structure #minecraft:village. |
| No commands | Explore Overworld plains, deserts, savannas, taigas, snowy areas, and meadows. |
| Planning around a seed | Use a seed map configured for the exact edition and game version. |
| Searching Nether or End | Return to the Overworld; villages are not generated in those dimensions. |
FAQ
What is the command to find a village in Minecraft Bedrock?
Enable Allow Cheats, open chat, and run /locate structure minecraft:village. The command searches for the nearest village structure in the current dimension.
What is the Java command to find a village?
Run /locate structure #minecraft:village. Java also supports specific IDs such as minecraft:village_plains and minecraft:village_desert.
Can I find a village without cheats?
Yes. Explore the Overworld, especially plains, deserts, savannas, taigas, snowy village areas, and meadows. You can also use a seed map configured for your exact edition and Minecraft version.
Why does /locate say no village was found?
The command searches only the current dimension. Return to the Overworld and try again. If it still fails, check the command syntax and confirm that villages are not being prevented by a behavior pack or world-generation change.
Does enabling cheats disable achievements?
On Bedrock, turning on Allow Cheats permanently disables achievements in that world, even if you later turn cheats off. Java’s temporary Open to LAN command setting does not use that Bedrock rule.
Does /locate find zombie villages separately?
No. The command locates the village structure type and does not distinguish an ordinary village from an abandoned or zombie village.
The Bottom Line
For Bedrock, use /locate structure minecraft:village. For Java, use /locate structure #minecraft:village. If commands are unavailable, explore village-generating Overworld biomes or use a seed map set to the exact edition and version. Always treat returned coordinates as a structure location, not a guaranteed safe teleport point.
