To find an embedded video’s URL, inspect the player in your browser’s developer tools and look for an iframe’s src attribute. That usually identifies the player page, not a direct video file. If the page does not expose a useful iframe URL, record its network activity while reloading and inspect the requests associated with the player.
Find the player URL in the page’s HTML
- Open the page with the video. Right-click the visible player and choose Inspect (or use your browser’s equivalent) to focus the relevant element in developer tools. In Chrome, Inspect mode selects the page element in the Elements panel’s DOM tree. Chrome DevTools: Inspect the DOM.
- Look for an
<iframe>. Expand nearby elements in the DOM tree until you find the frame containing the player. Check itssrcvalue; this is usually the embedded player’s URL. - Copy the complete address. Keep its path and query parameters intact. Some parameters are required for the player to identify or display the video.
Provider patterns can help you recognize what you found. YouTube’s documented embed example uses an /embed/ path, including a Privacy Enhanced Mode example on youtube-nocookie.com. Vimeo’s player URLs use the pattern https://player.vimeo.com/video/{video_id}. See YouTube’s embed instructions and Vimeo’s Player SDK documentation.
Understand what the URL points to
An iframe’s src ordinarily identifies a hosted player endpoint. It is not automatically the address of a standalone video file such as an MP4. The player may load or configure the video through additional requests, so identify what the address serves before treating it as a media-file URL.
For an unlisted Vimeo video, Vimeo’s Player SDK documentation says the URL must include the h parameter. Removing it can prevent the player from locating the video. Preserve the full URL when testing an embed, and consult the provider’s guidance for any provider-specific parameters.

Use Network tools when the iframe does not help
A player may be inserted or configured after the initial page markup loads. In that case, the useful address may be visible in browser network activity rather than as an obvious iframe in the page’s original HTML.
- Open developer tools before reloading. Select the Network panel while the page is open. Chrome DevTools records requests while the panel is open; its Network panel guide explains how to filter and inspect them.
- Reload the page and start the video if needed. Keep the Network panel open so requests made during page load and player startup are recorded.
- Narrow the request list. Use request-type filters and search for the provider’s domain or a video-related term. Look at the initiator to see what triggered a request, then inspect its headers and response details.
- Distinguish a player address from a resource request. Network activity may show player endpoints or transient resources used to load playback, not a stable share or embed URL. Use the request context and provider documentation to determine what an address represents.
Compare the two inspection routes

Troubleshoot a URL that will not open by itself
A copied embed URL can fail when pasted into a separate tab even though it works on the original page. YouTube says direct access to its embedded player without an enclosing page or context will typically lack an HTTP Referer and can produce an error screen. Test the URL in the original embedded context before concluding it is invalid. See YouTube’s embed guidance.

For Vimeo, check the video’s privacy settings and the domain allowed to embed it. Vimeo identifies privacy and embedding-domain configuration as relevant playback troubleshooting factors in its embedded-video troubleshooting guidance. An address that works only on the publisher’s page may be subject to those settings.

Discovering a player URL is a diagnostic step, not permission to download, reproduce, or redistribute the underlying video. Follow the provider’s privacy controls, the publisher’s rights, and applicable rules. Vimeo documents embed configuration and privacy controls in its embedding troubleshooting guidance.
