Before buying, check the connector and the electrical requirements: a plug that fits is not proof that a charger is safe or suitable. For USB-C, verify that the device supports charging through that port and that the charger and cable meet its power needs.
1. Identify the device precisely
Find the brand and exact model or product number on the device, its label, original packaging, or in its system information. A product family name alone may not be enough: similar-looking models can use different connectors or power requirements.
Search the manufacturer’s official support site or parts store using that identifier. HP, for example, directs notebook owners to enter the product number to find compatible adapters: HP’s adapter identification guidance. Look for the original accessory’s part number and any models explicitly listed as compatible. Parts listings and regional availability can change.
2. Match the connector and electrical requirements
For a non-USB power adapter, compare the device maker’s requirements with the candidate adapter’s label and product specifications. Check the connector type and size, required voltage, and wattage. If the device specifies a polarity marking for a barrel-style DC connector, check that too; requirements vary, and there is no universal polarity rule for every device.

Do not assume that a connector that fits is electrically compatible. HP says the adapter should meet the device’s voltage and wattage requirements. Dell advises matching the connector and selecting wattage equal to or greater than the original; treat that as Dell guidance, not a rule that overrides another manufacturer’s requirements. 3. Check USB-C charging support and cable capability
USB-C describes a connector, not everything a port or cable can do. First confirm in the device’s documentation that it accepts charging over USB-C. Then check the required charging power and choose a compatible charger and cable. USB Power Delivery negotiates power between compatible devices and chargers, while USB-C cables can have different power and data capabilities.

USB-IF states, “All cables do not have the same capabilities.” Its guidance explains cable markings and capabilities: USB Power Delivery and USB-C cables and connectors. USB PD Revision 3.1 supports up to 240 W over a full-featured USB Type-C cable and connector; that is a standard’s capability, not a claim that every device, charger, or cable supports 240 W.
4. Compare replacement candidates before buying
Use the exact model or product number to check a candidate’s compatibility listing. Prefer the manufacturer’s replacement part or an authorized parts channel when one is available, and confirm that the listing covers your specific device rather than only a broad product family.

- Model match: Is your exact model or product number listed as compatible?
- Connector: Does the connector type and size match the device?
- Power: Does the adapter meet the device’s stated voltage and wattage requirements, or does the USB-C charger support the required charging capability?
- Cable features: If data transfer matters as well as charging, does the cable support the needed data capability?
- Package contents: Check whether an AC power cord is included separately from the adapter; contents vary by product and seller.
If the manufacturer does not list a compatible replacement and the device’s requirements are unclear, do not choose based only on appearance. Contact the manufacturer or a qualified repair provider with the exact model and the old accessory’s label information.

Do not keep using a cable, plug, or adapter that shows visible damage. Apple identifies frayed or otherwise damaged cable insulation, bent or damaged prongs, casing damage, and adapters that fail to power a device as warning signs; its advice is for Apple products, but visible damage is a reason to stop using an accessory and check the relevant device maker’s safety instructions.
