Check the label on the receiver’s rear panel first: Yamaha manuals for the RX-V765 and RX-V459 place the serial number there. Record the model number and serial number separately, then use the exact model to find the matching manual in Yamaha’s official library. Yamaha does not publish a general AV receiver serial-number decoding rule in the sources cited here, so contact Yamaha support if you need the manufacturing date rather than guessing from the serial number.
Find the model and serial number on the receiver
- Turn the receiver off. Inspect the rear chassis and rear-panel labels from outside the unit. Do not open the cabinet just to identify it.
- Look for model and serial fields. Yamaha’s RX-V765 owner’s manual says, “The serial number is located on the rear of the unit” (RX-V765 owner’s manual). The RX-V459 manual also places the serial number on the rear panel. These are examples, not proof that every Yamaha receiver uses the same label placement or wording.
- Copy the complete model number exactly as printed, including letters, digits and any suffix. Write down the serial number separately. If you share a photo of the label publicly, obscure the serial number.
Confirm the model with Yamaha’s manual library
Search Yamaha’s official manual library using the model name or a keyword. Open the result that matches the model printed on your receiver, and confirm the marking before following model-specific instructions. The precise model matters because manuals and guidance may differ between receiver models.
Can the serial number tell you the manufacturing date?
Not reliably from a general rule established by the cited Yamaha sources. They do not document a universal method for decoding Yamaha AV receiver serial numbers into manufacturing dates. Yamaha’s public serial-number lookup is for checking a firmware feature, not determining a receiver’s manufacture date. Yamaha USA’s serial-number information for pianos is a separate resource and should not be applied to receivers.
If the date matters, contact Yamaha support and provide the exact model and serial number. Ask them to interpret the serial for that receiver; avoid treating an undocumented pattern or an online result for another Yamaha product category as a confirmed date.

Getting a printed manual or repair help
Yamaha’s parts and manuals page explains how to order a printed replacement manual: use “O M” followed by the model number without a dash. For repair, Yamaha says it does not recommend attempting work unless you are specifically qualified and have the proper background and training. Use a qualified service professional if the receiver needs repair.
