There is no rear setup button on the AirPods 4 charging case. To enter pairing mode, open the case with both AirPods inside and double-tap the front of the case. When the status light flashes white, select AirPods 4 in your device’s Bluetooth settings.
Where is the AirPods 4 setup button?
The pairing control is a double-tap area on the front of the charging case, near the status light. It is not a physical button you press on the back. Apple’s instructions for AirPods 4 use this front-of-case gesture; the rear setup button applies to some other AirPods cases. See Apple’s AirPods User Guide for the model-specific pairing instructions.
Do not confuse the case’s pairing gesture with the controls on the AirPods stems, which are used for listening and calls.
Put AirPods 4 into pairing mode
- Place both AirPods in the charging case and open the lid.
- Double-tap the front of the case.
- Check for a flashing white status light. This indicates the AirPods are ready to pair.
- Select AirPods 4 on your device. On an Apple device, follow the setup prompt if it appears; otherwise open Bluetooth settings. On Android or another Bluetooth device, open its Bluetooth settings and choose AirPods from the available-device list.
Apple’s support article also describes the front-of-case gesture for connecting AirPods 4 to an iPhone and directs users to Bluetooth settings when the setup prompt is not available: Connect your AirPods and AirPods Pro.

Why the familiar rear button is missing
Apple uses different pairing procedures across AirPods models. For AirPods 4, the case enters pairing mode when you double-tap its front while the lid is open and the earbuds are inside. Searching for, or pressing, a rear setup button is not part of the AirPods 4 pairing steps.
AirPods 4 model reference
Apple lists AirPods 4 as introduced in 2024 and provides a Quick Start Guide and User Guide for the model on its AirPods identification page. Confirming the model matters because the case controls differ across AirPods generations.
