Choose a VPN by the job you need it to do
Before comparing brands, decide what a VPN should help you accomplish. A service that suits someone who wants a simple connection for public Wi-Fi may not be the right choice for someone who needs specific privacy features, several device connections, or access to services while travelling.

Check the Windows app, not just the VPN brand
A provider’s reputation or overall ranking does not establish how its Windows client behaves. Check the app’s supported Windows versions, protocol choices, kill switch, leak protections, split-tunneling availability, and update history. Confirm that features you rely on are included in the plan you intend to buy and work on Windows—not only on another platform.
Security.org’s 2026 guide to VPNs for Windows laptops and desktop PCs assessed support for WireGuard, OpenVPN, and IKEv2, along with encryption criteria. That is a useful example of why platform-specific testing matters; it does not establish that every provider offers every protocol or feature in its Windows app.

What the main protections do
- Kill switch: Intended to cut internet access if the VPN connection drops, reducing the chance that traffic continues outside the tunnel. Check how the provider implements it on Windows.
- IP and DNS leak protections: Help prevent identifying connection information or DNS requests from escaping the VPN tunnel. Look for Windows-specific test results rather than relying on a feature label alone.
- Split tunneling: Lets you choose which traffic uses the VPN and which uses your regular connection. Confirm whether the Windows app offers it and whether its behavior suits your needs.
Separate Windows configuration from choosing a VPN service
Microsoft’s Windows VPN technical guide explains how to configure VPN profiles, including split or force tunneling, automatic connection triggers, always-on profiles, traffic filtering, and profile settings. This is guidance for configuring Windows; it is not an endorsement of a consumer VPN provider.
For most consumer decisions, compare the provider’s own Windows app and service terms. Windows profile configuration and a VPN subscription are related but distinct: the operating system can manage a connection profile, while you still need to decide which service and app to trust and use.

Assess privacy claims without treating them as guarantees
Read the provider’s actual privacy policy and check what an independent audit covered, when it took place, and whether it applies to the service or apps you plan to use. Tom’s Guide cautions that third-party audits can miss problems and that reviewers cannot guarantee a provider stores no data. A privacy label or audit should therefore inform your assessment, not end it.
Free VPNs also need individual scrutiny. Top10VPN’s 2026 Windows guide reported that 88% of the free VPNs it tested leaked data, including IP addresses and DNS requests. That is the publisher’s result for the services in its tests—not a finding about every free VPN. RTINGS’ Windows PC review discusses individual services and feature limitations, which is a reason to evaluate each option rather than assume all free or all paid VPNs are alike.

Use speed and streaming results in context
VPN test results depend on the reviewer’s devices, location, baseline connection, server choice, protocol, and test date. Security.org’s 2026 general VPN roundup, updated October 2, reports nine months of testing. In that guide’s snapshot, Security.org describes NordVPN as covering 137 countries with more than 9,300 servers and says its testing found less than a five percent impact on its internet speed. Those are Security.org’s dated editorial findings, not fixed current specifications or a guarantee of the speed you will get.
Streaming results are similarly limited. A review’s test of a provider with a particular service, region, and account shows what worked under those conditions; it cannot promise future access or success from every country. Treat streaming as a feature to verify for your own location and intended service, not as a permanent capability.

Compare the 2026 examples by fit, not by rank

Make the final choice with a short checklist
- Set your priority. Decide whether privacy, ease of use, speed, travel streaming, Windows safeguards, or several device connections matters most.
- Verify Windows support. Check supported Windows versions and confirm that the app includes the protections and settings you need.
- Examine the privacy evidence. Read the policy and note the scope and date of any audit; do not treat either as an absolute guarantee.
- Compare like with like. For speed or streaming, check the reviewer’s locations, test setup, service region, and date.
- Check the full cost and terms. Compare the renewal price, device policy, plan inclusions, and cancellation or refund conditions at checkout for your region.
Choose the provider whose Windows app and independently described evidence best match your priorities—not simply the service with the most prominent “best VPN” label.
