Windows 11 does not keep every password in one central list. A saved website login may be stored in Edge, Chrome, Firefox, a third-party password manager, or Windows Credential Manager. Wi-Fi passwords are stored in wireless profiles, while passkeys are a separate type of credential.

Use the section that matches the password you need. You may have to verify your identity with your Windows PIN, password, fingerprint, or face recognition before a saved password can be revealed.

Find saved website passwords in Microsoft Edge

Current versions of Edge use Microsoft Password Manager. To view a saved login:

  1. Open Microsoft Edge.
  2. Select the three-dot Settings and more button in the upper-right corner.
  3. Select Settings.
  4. Select Passwords and autofill.
  5. Select Microsoft Password Manager.
  6. Select the arrow next to the website login.
  7. Select the eye icon.
  8. Approve the Windows security prompt with your device PIN or password, if requested.

Edge profiles keep passwords separate. If a login is missing, select the profile icon in Edge and check the other profiles you use. A password may also be synchronized with the Microsoft account connected to the correct Edge profile.

Microsoft Password Manager is available when the Edge profile uses a personal Microsoft account. Work and school profiles can have password-manager features restricted by an administrator.

Important: Editing a saved password in Edge changes only the browser entry. It does not change the password on the website. To change the actual password, use that website’s account or security settings.

Why the old Edge instructions may not match

Older guides commonly use Settings and more > Settings > Profiles > Passwords. Current Microsoft documentation uses Passwords and autofill > Microsoft Password Manager.

Also, Microsoft says the Automatically save passwords setting was retired in Edge 124 and later. Edge now offers to save credentials when you enter new login details. Passwords saved previously remain available.

Find saved website passwords in Google Chrome

  1. Open Google Chrome.
  2. Select the three-dot More button.
  3. Select Passwords and autofill.
  4. Select Google Password Manager.

  6. Select the Show password eye icon.
  7. Complete Windows Hello, device, or Google Account verification if Chrome requests it.

Chrome can save passwords in your Google Account or locally in the current Chrome profile. If you cannot find an entry, check the Chrome profile and the Google Account currently in use. Passwords saved to a Google Account can also be managed at passwords.google.com.

Chrome password problems

  • The website is missing: Check other Chrome profiles and Google Accounts. The login may have been saved locally rather than synchronized.
  • Chrome asks for verification: This is normal. Chrome may require your Google Account password, Windows Hello, fingerprint, face recognition, or another device-authentication method.
  • Chrome never offered to save it: Open More > Passwords and autofill > Google Password Manager > Settings and review Declined sites and apps.
  • You used a passkey: Passkeys do not have a readable password to reveal. Chrome manages them separately from ordinary saved passwords.

On Windows 11 version 22H2 or later, Chrome can use Windows Hello for passkeys. A passkey saved only to Windows Hello is not synchronized or recoverable if the computer is lost or Windows is reinstalled.

Find saved website passwords in Firefox

  1. Open Mozilla Firefox.
  2. Open the Firefox menu.
  3. Select Logins and Passwords or Passwords, depending on the interface version.
  4. Firefox opens the about:logins page.
  5. Select a saved login.
  6. Select the eye icon to display the password, or select Copy.

Firefox may require Windows authentication when you reveal, copy, or edit a login. This is authentication for the Windows device, not your Mozilla Account password.

Use the Search Passwords box on the about:logins page to filter entries by website, username, or password.

When Firefox passwords appear to be missing

  • Check that Firefox opened the original profile. A new or different Firefox profile can make existing logins appear to have disappeared.
  • If the passwords exist on another device, sign in to Firefox Sync and make sure Logins and Passwords is enabled in Sync settings.
  • If Firefox never saves a particular login, the website may prohibit password saving, or security software may be interfering.

Instructions referring to Tools > Options > Security > Saved Passwords or a Show Passwords button are for older Firefox versions. Current Firefox uses Logins and Passwords or Passwords.

Check Windows Credential Manager

Credential Manager stores some credentials used by websites, applications, connected services, and networks. It is useful for Windows-managed credentials, but it is not a complete list of every password on the computer.

  2. Type credential manager.
  3. Select Credential Manager Control panel.
  4. Open Web Credentials or Windows Credentials.
  5. Expand an entry to inspect the information Windows makes available.

Do not expect Credential Manager to show the Windows account password, every password saved by every browser, passwords held only by a third-party manager, or passkeys. Chrome, Firefox, and Edge have their own password-management interfaces and may store credentials in browser profiles or cloud accounts.

Show a saved Wi-Fi password in Windows 11 Settings

This method works only for a network whose profile is already saved on the computer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Network & internet.
  3. Select Properties.
  4. Find Wi-Fi network password.
  5. Select Show.

Depending on the Windows 11 interface version, you can also use:

  1. Open Settings > Network & internet > Wi-Fi.
  2. Select Manage known networks.
  3. Select the saved network.
  4. Select Show next to Wi-Fi network password.

Windows cannot retrieve a password for a network it has never joined. It displays the key stored in the saved wireless profile, which may be outdated if the router password was changed later.

Use Terminal to export a saved Wi-Fi profile

You can list saved wireless profiles with netsh.

  1. Open Windows Terminal, Command Prompt, or PowerShell.
  2. Run:
netsh wlan show profiles

Find the exact network name in the output. To export that profile, create a destination folder first, such as C:WiFiProfiles, then run:

UGREEN USB C Hub 5 in 1 Multiport USB Adapter 4K HDMI, 100W Power Delivery
  • 5 in 1 Connectivity: The USB C Multiport Adapter is equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 100W USB C PD port, a 5 Gbps USB A data port, and two 480 Mbps USB A ports
netsh wlan export profile name="WiFiName" folder="C:WiFiProfiles" key=clear

Replace WiFiName with the saved network name. Use quotation marks when the name contains spaces, such as name="Office WiFi".

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The exported XML file contains the security key in plain text only when the command is run by a local administrator. Otherwise, the key remains encrypted. Because key=clear creates an unencrypted copy, delete the XML file as soon as you finish.

Common netsh errors

Problem Likely cause
“The system cannot find the file specified” The folder supplied in folder= does not exist or cannot be accessed.
The network is not listed Windows has no saved profile with that name, or the profile was deleted.
No plain-text key appears in the XML The command was not run with local-administrator rights, or the profile/security configuration does not expose a clear-text key.
The displayed password does not work The saved Windows profile may contain an old key; Windows does not query the router for its current password.

Check a third-party password manager

If you use Bitwarden, 1Password, Dashlane, NordPass, Keeper, or another password manager, open that product’s Windows application, browser extension, or account vault. Its entries will not necessarily appear in Edge, Chrome, Firefox, or Credential Manager.

The same applies to credentials managed by VPN clients, remote-access tools, enterprise identity software, mail applications, and database clients. Use the credential interface provided by the application.

What Windows 11 cannot show as a normal password

  • Your current Windows account password: Credential Manager is not a password viewer for the Windows account.
  • A passkey: Passkeys use cryptographic credentials rather than a conventional password and generally cannot be revealed as text.
  • A password from another browser profile: Each browser profile can have a separate vault.
  • A password that was never saved: Windows and browsers cannot recover a password that was only typed and not stored.

Only reveal or export credentials on a computer and account you are authorized to use. Treat displayed passwords and exported Wi-Fi XML files as sensitive information, and remove temporary copies when finished.

FAQ

Where are saved passwords stored in Windows 11?

There is no single Windows 11 password list. Website passwords may be in Edge, Chrome, Firefox, or a third-party manager. Some application and network credentials are in Credential Manager, while Wi-Fi keys are stored in wireless profiles.

Can I see my Windows login password in Credential Manager?

No. Credential Manager does not reveal the password for the current Windows user account. If you forgot it, use the appropriate Microsoft account, local-account, or administrator password-reset process.

Why is a saved password missing from Edge or Chrome?

Check the browser profile and, where applicable, the Microsoft or Google Account being used. The password may be stored in another profile, saved locally instead of online, or restricted by a work or school administrator.

How do I find a Wi-Fi password if Windows is already connected?

Open Settings, select Network & internet, open Properties, find Wi-Fi network password, and select Show. You can also use Network & internet > Wi-Fi > Manage known networks and select the saved network.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I recover a password that was not saved?

No. A browser or Windows credential store can display only credentials that were previously saved. Use the website’s password-reset option instead.

The Bottom Line

Start with the application that saved the credential: Microsoft Password Manager for Edge, Google Password Manager for Chrome, Firefox’s about:logins page, or the vault for a third-party manager. Use Credential Manager for Windows-managed application and network entries, and use Windows Settings or netsh wlan for saved Wi-Fi profiles. These stores are separate, so checking one does not search the others.
