Open the retailer’s official website or app, sign in, and check the specific order for a status explanation or action request. “On hold” is not a standard status: it can mean payment verification, a pending card authorization, or a retailer review. The next step depends on which one applies.
Check the order itself before taking action
- Open the retailer directly. Type its known website address or use its official app, then sign in. Avoid links in unexpected messages.
- Open the exact order. Read its current status and any prompt asking you to verify payment, correct an address, or provide information.
- Check the account’s email and messages. Find the order confirmation and later notifications. Compare the order number, items, and status against the order shown in your account.
- Use the authenticated order workflow. If the order page offers a way to update payment or address details, follow that process. Do not send full card details or account credentials in reply to an unsolicited message.
- Ask the right party if the reason remains unclear. Contact the retailer through support reached from its official site or app. Give the order number and ask what specific action or review is outstanding. If the issue is only a pending authorization, ask the card issuer about its release timing.
What “on hold” may mean
Retailers use different status wording and processes, so examples from one company are not a diagnosis of another order. A hold or interruption may involve one of several issues:
- Payment verification: The retailer needs you to confirm a payment method before processing can continue. Amazon UK describes this for certain digital orders: the order is held pending verification. - Payment processing: The payment may not have gone through. Target lists an unprocessable payment as one reason an item may be canceled after processing starts. Target’s order-cancellation guidance.
- Address or fulfillment problem: Target says an item may be canceled if its shipping address cannot be verified or the item is unavailable. Walmart lists unavailable stock, quantity limits, unavailable shipping methods, listing or price errors, and an older unsupported app or browser among cancellation reasons. - Retailer review: Walmart says it may need more information from its Credit and Fraud Avoidance department, and that it emails customers if it needs information or cancels an order or part of one. Walmart’s canceled-order guidance.
A verification prompt on a retailer’s website can also be a security check rather than an order problem. Target says its press-and-hold check may appear when its systems detect activity that appears unusual or automated; seeing the check alone does not mean there is a problem with the account. Tell a pending authorization from a posted charge
A bank or card statement entry marked pending may be an authorization hold, not a completed charge. Target explains that an authorization reserves funds so an order can be processed; the hold may remain until it expires, the issuer removes it, or it is settled. A financial institution may take a few days to clear it, and multiple authorizations can appear when an order ships in parts or uses different fulfillment methods. Walmart likewise says its temporary hold appears as pending and that the final order total is charged when the order is picked up, delivered, or shipped. Walmart says the bank removes the hold under its own policies: “We can’t remove the hold, only the bank can.” Its help page says removal can take up to 10 days after order completion. That is Walmart’s guidance, not a general deadline for other retailers or card issuers. Walmart’s temporary-holds guidance.
Do not assume a pending authorization means the order has shipped or that the retailer has collected a final payment. The order page shows the order’s status; the card issuer can explain the pending entry and its release timing.

Follow verification requests and their specific deadlines
If the retailer asks you to verify payment, use the order page or another authenticated account workflow. Correct an expired or incorrect payment method only if the order page offers that option. If the stated issue is the address, make any correction through the account process the retailer provides.
Deadlines are specific to the retailer and situation. For the digital-order payment-verification case described on its UK help page, Amazon says an order is automatically canceled if the payment method is not verified within seven days of the email notification. Its page advises contacting the bank or financial institution if you need help completing verification. Do not apply that seven-day window to other Amazon orders, retailers, or verification requests. Protect yourself from fake order-support messages
An unexpected text, call, or email claiming there is a problem with an order may be an impersonation attempt. Georgia’s consumer protection guidance warns that fake order-confirmation contacts may ask for credentials or payment information. Do not click an unsolicited link or call a number in an alarming message. Independently open the retailer’s app or known website, check the order there, and reach support using contact details from that official channel. Contact the retailer through the support route in its official account or on its known website. Ask what specific action or review is keeping the order from moving forward, whether you need to do anything, and whether the order is still active. If the retailer confirms the only issue is a pending card authorization, contact the issuer rather than asking the retailer to release it.
