If you need to reinstall Microsoft Office 2007, you need the original 25-character product key for the correct edition. It looks like this:
XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXXDo not confuse it with the Product ID shown inside Word or Excel. The Product ID identifies the installed software, but it is not the key required to reinstall or activate Office.

1. Check the Office 2007 packaging
The most reliable place to find an Office 2007 product key is the material that came with the original purchase. Check the following:
- The sticker on the Office 2007 CD case
- The original retail box or product packaging
- A Certificate of Authenticity supplied with the software
- The confirmation email from an online purchase
Look for a code divided into five groups of five characters. Carefully distinguish letters from numbers, particularly O and 0, or I, l, and 1.

2. Search your old purchase emails
If you bought Office 2007 online, search every email account you used at the time. Useful search terms include:

Microsoft Office
product key
product code
license
confirmation
orderAlso search archived, deleted, and spam folders if your email provider retains them. Microsoft identifies the purchase-confirmation email as one possible source of an Office 2007 key.
3. Do not use the key on your computer
A key printed on the bottom of a laptop, on a desktop case, or on a Windows Certificate of Authenticity is normally a Windows product key. It is not an Office 2007 key.

Using that code in Office setup will usually produce an invalid product-key error. Office and Windows are licensed separately, even when they came preinstalled on the same computer.
4. Check the installed Office copy—but identify the number correctly
Office 2007 can display a Product ID. This may help identify the installed edition, but it is not the original 25-character key.
In Word 2007, open:
- Word
- The Microsoft Office Button in the upper-left corner
- Word Options
- Resources
- About
Excel uses a similar route:
Microsoft Office Button > Excel Options > Resources > About
The number may look similar to this:
12345-123-1234567-12345That is a Product ID, not the product key. It cannot be substituted for the 25-character code during installation.

5. Check whether Office is already activated
You can use the Office 2007 activation screen to confirm the current activation state. However, this screen does not reveal the complete product key.

If activation has already completed, Office displays:
This product has already been activated.
That confirms the installation is activated. It does not provide a way to display or copy the full key.
6. Contact Microsoft if you have proof of purchase
If the packaging and purchase email are missing, Microsoft’s documented advice is to contact Microsoft Support when you have valid proof of purchase. Have as much information as possible available, including:

- The retailer or online store used
- An order number or receipt
- The Office edition, such as Home and Student or Professional
- Photos of the original packaging, if available
Because Office 2007 is no longer supported in the normal way, Microsoft may not be able to recover or replace every lost key. Still, support is the appropriate official route when you can demonstrate a legitimate purchase.
7. Make sure the key matches your Office edition
Office 2007 was sold in multiple editions, including:
- Home and Student 2007
- Standard 2007
- Professional 2007
- Professional Plus 2007
- Ultimate 2007
- Enterprise 2007
A key for one edition should not be assumed to work with another edition or licensing channel. For example, a Professional Plus volume-license key is not the same as a retail Home and Student key.
Check the edition printed on the CD, packaging, purchase receipt, or installation media before attempting a reinstall.
What if Office 2007 came preinstalled?
A preinstalled copy may have been supplied under an OEM or computer-specific license. In that case, it may not have a transferable retail key. The Product ID can sometimes indicate that the installation is OEM—for example, it may contain an OEM segment—but it still does not reveal a reusable 25-character key.
An OEM license may be tied to the original computer. Moving that installation to another PC may not be permitted, even if Office is still installed on the original machine.
Can Registry Editor recover the Office 2007 key?
Many older guides claim that a particular Registry Editor path will show the complete Office 2007 key. Microsoft does not document a supported Registry method for recovering the full key from Office 2007.
Some third-party product-key utilities may report licensing information, but they are not Microsoft recovery tools. They may fail to recover the original key, show only partial information, or identify a generic installation key rather than the key used for a retail purchase. Avoid downloading unknown utilities that request administrator access or disable antivirus protection.
Why ospp.vbs /dstatus is not the answer
The command commonly copied in product-key articles is:
cscript ospp.vbs /dstatusMicrosoft documents this tool for later volume-licensed versions of Office, including Office 2016, Office 2019, Office LTSC 2021, and Office LTSC 2024. It is not an official recovery method for a retail Office 2007 key.
Commands that reference folders such as Office16, Office15, or Office14 also refer to later Office generations. They should not be presented as Office 2007 instructions. Even on supported versions, licensing commands generally do not reveal a complete original 25-character key.
Installing Office 2007 after finding the key
Once you have the correct key and the matching Office 2007 installation disc:

- Insert the Office 2007 CD.
- If setup does not start automatically, open the CD drive in File Explorer.
- Run
SETUP.EXE. - Enter the 25-character Office product key when prompted.
- Accept the Microsoft Software License Terms.
- Click Continue and complete the installation.
- Activate Office when prompted or use the activation menu inside an Office application.
Office 2007 trial installations could run for up to 25 launches without a key. After that, Office could enter Reduced Functionality mode, which may prevent creating new documents or saving changes. Existing files are not normally damaged, but you should make a backup before troubleshooting or reinstalling.

Modern Microsoft redemption pages are intended for Microsoft 365 and newer one-time-purchase versions such as Office 2016, 2019, 2021, and 2024. Office 2007 is not included in the current supported redemption list.
As a result, an authentic Office 2007 key may not work on a modern Office setup page. The normal Office 2007 reinstall route requires the original Office 2007 installation media and the key for that edition.

Important: Office 2007 is obsolete
Office 2007 reached the end of extended support on October 10, 2017. Microsoft no longer provides normal security updates, non-security updates, or regular assisted support for it.
If you continue using it, avoid opening untrusted documents and consider moving to a supported Office version or another maintained office suite. Recovering the key can help with a legacy installation, but it does not make Office 2007 secure or supported.
