Start by adding your library card to Libby, search the catalog, filter for audiobooks, then borrow an available title or place a hold. Your library determines which books are offered, how long you can borrow them, and how many you may check out.
Find your library’s digital audiobook service
Begin with Libby, OverDrive’s app and browser-based service for borrowing digital titles from participating libraries. You can use the app on a mobile device or visit Libby in a browser. Libby is free to use, and borrowing digital content requires a valid library card.
Search for your public library in Libby. If it does not appear, it may not have an OverDrive collection. Check your library’s website or contact a branch to ask which digital services it offers; some libraries use other services, such as Hoopla, instead.
Get a library card and add it to Libby
You need a separate card for each library whose collection you want to use. Card application rules vary by library: some let you get a digital card through Libby, while others require you to apply on the library website or in person.

- In Libby, find and select your library.
- Choose the option to sign in with a library card, then enter your card details.
- If you do not have a card, check the library’s website for its application process or ask a branch whether it offers digital signup.

Search for audiobooks you can borrow
Search by title, author, or series. Narrow the results to audiobooks using the format filter. To focus on books you can check out immediately, apply the “available now” filter.

- Open the library’s catalog in Libby and search for a book, author, or series.
- Open the filters and select the audiobook format.
- Select “available now” if you want to see titles with a copy ready to borrow.
- Open a title’s details. A “Borrow” button means a copy is currently available; if the title is checked out, Libby may offer a hold instead.

Borrow a title or place a hold
Select Borrow on an available audiobook and confirm the loan. If all copies are in use, choose the hold option if one is offered. You can monitor holds in the Holds area of Libby and get updates as the title becomes available.

Loan periods and borrowing limits are set by the library, not by Libby. Digital loans return automatically on their due dates, and Libby says there are no late fees for its digital content. The catalog, wait times, and policies can differ between libraries, even for the same title.
Listen in the app or a browser
After borrowing, open the audiobook from your Shelf. In the Libby mobile app, titles download by default over Wi-Fi, so you can listen offline. The browser version requires an internet connection. Libby’s offline listening guidance covers the download behavior.

What to do if you cannot find a title or library
- The audiobook does not appear: Make sure the audiobook format filter is selected. A library may not own the title in audio format.
- The title is listed but unavailable: Place a hold if Libby offers one, or check again later. The library controls the number of copies and its lending policies.
- Your library is missing from Libby: Ask the library whether it has an OverDrive collection. If not, ask which other digital lending services it supports.
- You see Hoopla mentioned: Check your library’s current digital-services page to confirm it participates and to learn its terms. Hoopla’s 2025 sign-up flyer describes audiobook lending, but says trial terms and borrow counts are determined by the library.
What determines whether library audiobook lending works for you?
Before settling on a service, check whether your library participates, whether the book is in its catalog as an audiobook, whether it is available now or requires a hold, and what the library’s loan period and checkout limit are. Also check how the service works on your device: Libby’s app supports offline listening after Wi-Fi downloads, while its browser version needs an internet connection.
Libby describes its offer this way: “With Libby, you can enjoy free ebooks, digital audiobooks, and magazines from your library.” The books are free to borrow with a valid card, but the available titles and terms depend on the library.
