Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallTo find a memory leak, compare memory use across the same workload and ask whether it keeps rising after garbage collection or the relevant resource cleanup. Rising process memory is a clue, not proof: first identify which memory pool or resource is growing, then trace what remains retained or unreleased, correct that lifecycle defect, and repeat the workload to verify the trend has stopped.
The tools and memory models differ by platform. The concrete diagnostic paths below are scoped to Java and Windows; they should not be treated as universal instructions for every language or operating system.
How can I tell if my application has a memory leak?
Establish a repeatable baseline before changing code or increasing limits. Record the workload, elapsed time, and relevant memory counters, then compare observations after startup has settled and under comparable load. A temporary rise during allocation is not enough to diagnose a leak; the stronger signal is persistent growth in memory that should have been reclaimed or resources that should have been released.
- Choose the right counter. Identify whether the concern is managed heap, Metaspace, native process memory, or a particular operating-system resource.
- Repeat a representative workload. Use comparable operations or cycles so that a normal increase in workload is not mistaken for a leak.
- Check whether growth persists after cleanup. For Java, compare the live set after full garbage collections. For other resources, observe their counts after the code path that should release them.
- Record the trend. Note the workload and timing alongside the measurements; a single reading rarely identifies the cause.
Oracle’s Java SE 26 troubleshooting documentation states: “For detecting memory leaks, it is important to monitor the live set of the application that is, the amount of Java heap space or Metaspace being used after a full garbage collection.” Oracle Java SE 26: Troubleshoot Memory Leaks

What does an OutOfMemoryError mean?
An OutOfMemoryError means an allocation could not be satisfied; it does not, by itself, prove that objects are leaking. Oracle identifies several possible causes, including an undersized Java heap or Metaspace, native-memory exhaustion, a large allocation, or excessive finalization. The error details and the pool that failed matter: heap exhaustion, Metaspace exhaustion, and native-memory exhaustion require different evidence and may need different remedies.
Likewise, a process-memory increase on Windows does not identify whether the source is a heap allocation, virtual allocation, handle, GDI object, USER object, or a kernel-mode component. Diagnose the growing domain before choosing a fix.
How do I find a memory leak in Java?
1. Confirm persistent live-set growth
Once the application is in a stable state, track Java heap or Metaspace use after full garbage collections while it handles a stable workload. A live set that continues to rise across comparable observations is stronger evidence of a leak than a transient allocation peak. Check which pool is growing rather than relying on a single total-process-memory figure.

2. Record the problem while it occurs
Oracle documents JDK Mission Control (JMC) and Java Flight Recorder (JFR) as a route for investigating Java memory problems. Capture a recording that covers the period in which the growth occurs, then inspect live-object trends, allocation stacks, and paths to garbage-collection roots. Those views can connect surviving objects to the code that allocated them and the references keeping them reachable.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Collecting paths to GC roots can add overhead comparable to a full garbage collection, according to Oracle. Consider that cost when selecting the observation window, especially for a production process. Heap histograms can also help narrow the investigation to classes with notable object counts or sizes; a histogram is a lead to follow, not proof that a particular class is the defect.
3. Follow the retention path
Look for objects that accumulate across equivalent workload cycles and inspect why they remain reachable. Oracle gives an example in which objects enter a HashSet through a login flow and may not be removed when a user logs out. That illustrates a possible retention path, not a universal explanation. In your application, trace the references back to the owner and determine which lifecycle event should remove them.

4. Separate a leak from a capacity problem
If the post-collection live set reaches a stable level but that legitimate working set does not fit the configured pool, capacity may be inadequate. Review sizing separately from leak evidence. Increasing a heap or other limit can postpone failure when capacity is genuinely too small, but it does not remove unintended references or fix an unreleased resource.
How do I find a memory leak in Windows?
Start with Performance Monitor
Microsoft recommends beginning with Performance Monitor to establish whether a leak exists before selecting an investigation path. Record a baseline and observe the resource relevant to the suspected issue under a repeatable workload. For application-level investigations, Microsoft’s guidance calls out Commit Size, Handles, User Objects, and GDI Objects as useful observations; do not rely on one generic memory number when a more specific resource may be growing.

Choose the path that matches the resource
Windows leaks can involve heap allocations, virtual allocations, handles, or GDI/USER objects. Identify which count or allocation pattern grows, then investigate the corresponding application or subsystem. Kernel-mode driver or component issues need a kernel-mode path; user-mode application issues need a user-mode path. Microsoft’s driver guidance and its application resource concepts describe different investigation contexts, so do not apply one as if it covers the other.

Microsoft’s prevention material is in a legacy Windows 7 application-qualification path. Its distinctions among memory and resource lifecycles remain useful for framing the problem, but verify specific APIs and procedures against current platform documentation for the Windows version and component you are diagnosing.
How do I fix a memory leak?
Fix the ownership or lifecycle defect indicated by the evidence, not merely the symptom. For managed objects, change the code that unintentionally keeps them reachable or fails to remove them when their work is complete. For native and Windows resources, inspect the relevant allocation/release pairs and ensure the resource is released on all applicable paths, including error and early-exit paths.
- Use the growing object, allocation, or resource count to locate the owning code path.
- Determine which event ends the object’s or resource’s useful lifetime.
- Correct the missed removal, release, or ownership transition at that lifecycle boundary.
- Review alternate exits and repeated operations so the correction applies beyond the successful path.
- Run the same representative workload and compare the same post-collection live set or resource counters.
A process restart only resets the observed process, and raising a limit only changes how long a process may run before pressure returns. Neither alone demonstrates that a leak was fixed. Oracle notes that code changes may be needed in the leaking class once analysis identifies it.

How do I prevent memory leaks?
Prevention is a lifecycle discipline: make ownership clear, pair acquisition with release, and test the same operation repeatedly rather than only once. For managed code, review long-lived collections, caches, listeners, callbacks, and other references that can outlive their intended work. For native or Windows code, review each resource type using its own allocation and release lifecycle; heap memory, virtual memory, handles, and GDI/USER objects are distinct resources.
- Exercise repeated create-use-close or login-logout cycles and compare resource counts across cycles.
- Include failure and cancellation paths in lifecycle reviews, not only normal completion.
- Track resource-specific counters where available, alongside process memory.
- Keep workload and observation conditions stable when comparing measurements.
- When the evidence points to insufficient capacity rather than retention, tune capacity as a separate change and re-check behavior under representative load.
Which diagnostic approach should I choose?
For Java, compare diagnostic options by the memory domains they expose, whether they show live-set trends, whether they capture allocation stacks and reference paths, their collection overhead and production suitability, and compatibility with the deployed runtime. Oracle documents JMC/JFR and heap histograms, and names Eclipse Memory Analyzer and YourKit as examples of third-party tools; Oracle does not provide a comparative benchmark or designate a winner in the cited troubleshooting material.
For Windows, choose the investigation route according to whether the evidence points to a user-mode application or a kernel-mode driver/component, and monitor the resource type actually changing. The Windows-specific paths are not substitutes for runtime-specific procedures in other ecosystems.
