To find a cheaper flight, compare flexible dates, nearby airports and different routings, then judge each option by its total cost—not just the fare shown first. Track prices if your plans allow, but book when an itinerary fits your budget and schedule rather than waiting for a guaranteed drop that may not come.
Are flight prices rising everywhere?
No. Fares vary by route: some are below historical patterns while others are higher. Demand, available seats, fuel costs and major events can affect prices, so a general headline cannot tell you what will happen on your trip. Skyscanner’s 2026 fare-map guide compares fares for departures within the next three months with the previous 12 months; it describes current fare context, not a prediction of future prices.
That makes route-specific comparisons more useful than trying to time the entire airfare market. Google Flights price graphs and alerts can help you monitor a particular route or set of dates, but past price trends cannot guarantee what a fare will do next.
How to search for a cheaper flight
- Start with a date range. Enter your route and check a month view or price graph rather than searching only one exact departure date. Try moving travel by a day or two in either direction. Google Flights offers date, airport and price-graph tools; Google explains its search features and limitations in its Google Flights help page.
- Compare nearby airports. Include alternate departure and arrival airports when they are practical. Add the cost and time of ground transport before deciding that a lower airfare is a real saving. The U.S. Department of Transportation’s airline customer-service guidance recommends considering alternate airports and routings.
- Compare nonstop and connecting itineraries. A connection may cost less, but weigh the fare against the longer trip, connection time and any airport change. If the itinerary involves separate tickets or a self-transfer, check whether you must collect and recheck bags and what happens if the first flight is delayed.
- Widen the search if your destination is flexible. Google Flights’ Explore map and Skyscanner’s Everywhere and Whole Month tools can help surface alternative destinations or dates. Skyscanner describes its search tools in its 2026 booking guide; its price map is not a forecast.
- Set a fare alert for options you would actually take. Track the route or dates while you compare. Alerts are a monitoring aid, not a promise that the price will fall.
- Check the airline’s terms and your complete trip cost before paying. Compare the fare conditions, baggage and seat fees, change or cancellation rules, and any transfer or overnight costs against the needs of your trip.
Compare the whole itinerary, not just the ticket price
A low headline fare can stop being the cheapest choice once you add costs and risks needed to complete the trip. Use the same checklist for each option:

- Schedule: departure and arrival times, total travel time, number of stops and connection length.
- Airport logistics: distance to alternate airports, transfers between airports and who handles checked bags during a connection.
- Flexibility: change and refund conditions, plus what you would lose if plans change or a connection is missed.
- Disruption exposure: how much time you have to connect and what rerouting choices may be available if a flight is disrupted.
The DOT cautions that low-cost carriers may not include baggage transfers, meals or advance seat assignment, and that smaller airlines may have limited rerouting options after disruptions. Read the specific airline’s fare rules and baggage terms; inclusions and policies vary.
Should you book now or wait?
Use the current itinerary and your own constraints to decide. If the fare fits your budget, the schedule works and you are comfortable with the airline and its terms, booking avoids the risk that the fare or suitable availability worsens. If your dates or destination are flexible, keep comparing and use alerts to watch for changes. Neither approach guarantees a lower price.

Travel analyst Henry Harteveldt put the practical choice this way in Associated Press reporting in April 2026: “My advice to travelers is this: If you find a flight whose schedule fits yours, with a fare you can afford, and on an airline you can at least tolerate, book it,” he said. The Associated Press report also discusses baggage fees. His advice is a useful decision rule, not a guarantee about future fares.
What booking-time statistics can—and cannot—tell you
Google’s 2025 analysis of four years of aggregated Google Flights data for trips departing from U.S. airports found these lowest-average-price points in its dataset:

These are historical averages, not a forecast or a rule for an individual route. The booking-day difference in particular is small, so there is little reason to wait for a Tuesday solely because of the weekday. Google’s earlier 2023 analysis reported different timing estimates: Christmas fares were lowest on average 71 days before departure, with a low range of 54–78 days, and U.S.-to-Europe fares were lowest 72 or more days ahead. The analyses used different periods and methods, another reason not to treat a past average as a booking deadline. Be cautious if a low fare depends on a tight self-transfer, an airport change, or restrictions you cannot accept. A separate ticket may leave you responsible for reaching the next flight if a delay causes you to miss it. Likewise, a fare that excludes the bag or seat you need may cost more than a higher fare once you add them. Confirm current fees, size limits and fare conditions with the airline before checkout.
