To find a beginner-friendly open-source project, start with something you care about, then look for a small, clearly explained task and verify that the project is active and welcomes contributions. Labels such as good first issue are useful search clues—not guarantees. The project’s own contribution guide and maintainers’ expectations determine what to do next.

Start with a project or subject you care about

Your first contribution is easier to choose when you have some context: a tool you already use, a programming language or subject you want to learn, or documentation you value. You do not have to begin with code. Projects may need help with writing, design, and organizing as well as software development. GitHub’s Open Source Guides recommends exploring work connected to your interests.

Make a short list of projects you would be willing to spend time understanding. Familiarity can help you recognize confusing instructions or reproduce a problem; an area you want to learn can give you a reason to read the code and ask questions.

Find candidate tasks through more than one route

Search project issues and contribution pages

On GitHub, issue labels such as good first issue and help wanted can surface tasks intended for outside contributors. A repository’s /contribute page may also collect suggested tasks. GitHub explains these discovery options in its guides to contributing to open source and finding ways to contribute.

On GitLab, the Contributor Platform and its issue finder offer another way to look for work. An issue aggregator such as Good First Issue can provide another starting point. These tools help with discovery; assess the issue and project yourself before committing to the work.

Choose a mentored program only if that structure appeals to you

If you want a more structured, mentored route, Google Summer of Code provides a participant guide. It is one option, not a prerequisite for making an ordinary first contribution.

Check whether the project is genuinely approachable

A welcoming label is only one signal. Open the task and repository pages and check the conditions that will affect whether you can make progress:

  • The task is current. Check whether it is still open, whether someone has already claimed or resolved it, and whether recent comments change its scope.
  • The request is understandable. Look for a clear description of the problem, enough context to know what outcome is wanted, and a way to tell when the task is complete.
  • The setup and tests are explained. Confirm that the repository tells contributors how to get started and how to run relevant checks.
  • The project is active enough for your needs. Recent activity can help you judge whether there is a realistic path to feedback; it does not guarantee a response on any particular schedule.
  • The community communicates respectfully. Read issue or discussion exchanges to get a sense of how questions and contributions are handled.
  • The instructions match the task. Find a current contribution guide and any task-specific requirements before editing files.

Good First Issue’s maintainer guidance describes assessing issue difficulty, clarity, and approachability. That is a useful reminder that a label alone cannot establish whether a task is a good fit.

Pick a task with a clear boundary

For a first contribution, prefer work that you can explain in a sentence and verify without changing unrelated parts of the project. Possible starting points include improving documentation, fixing a typo, making a small bug fix, updating interface language, or helping with design or community support. GitHub’s guide to finding ways to contribute describes non-code work such as documentation, design, and community support. GitLab’s first-contribution tutorial also describes contributions including typo fixes and interface language updates.

Before you begin, make sure you have enough information to act safely. If the issue is vague, unusually broad, or appears to conflict with another proposed change, ask a focused question before doing substantial work. GitHub advises newcomers to check with maintainers before opening a pull request for issues that lack newcomer-oriented labels, so the proposed change can be checked against project goals.

Follow the repository’s contribution process

There is no single workflow that applies to every project. Read the repository’s instructions first, then use its specified process for branches, checks, and review. GitHub’s contribution guide covers getting familiar with a repository, submitting a contribution, and maintainer review; GitLab’s tutorial illustrates a different platform’s process.

  1. Read the contribution instructions. Check the repository’s contribution guide and any instructions attached to the issue. Note the required branch, formatting, tests, and submission method.
  2. Understand the requested change. Read the issue and relevant discussion. Reproduce the problem or inspect the affected documentation or behavior so your change addresses the actual request.
  3. Clarify uncertainty early. Ask a concise question about the expected scope or approach if the issue does not give you enough direction.
  4. Make only the agreed, bounded change. Avoid bundling unrelated cleanup or extra features into a first contribution.
  5. Run the checks the project asks for. Follow its setup and test instructions, and describe any check you could not run when you submit the change.
  6. Submit through the project’s workflow. Open a pull request or merge request as instructed, explain what changed, and connect it to the issue if the project asks you to.
  7. Respond to review. Maintainers may request revisions or clarification. Follow the project’s process for updating your contribution.

Route What it helps you find What to verify before starting
GitHub issue labels and /contribute pages Issues marked for help or newcomer suitability, and repository-suggested contribution options. Whether the task is current and clear, and what the repository requires for contribution and review.
GitLab Contributor Platform and issue finder Contributor opportunities and issues surfaced through GitLab’s contributor resources. Whether the task matches your skills and interests, and whether its instructions explain setup and submission.
Issue aggregator such as Good First Issue A way to discover tasks selected for beginner suitability. How clear and current the individual issue is; an aggregator’s listing does not replace the project’s own instructions.
Google Summer of Code A structured, mentored program path for people seeking that kind of participation. Whether the program’s format and participant guidance fit your goals; it is not required for a first contribution.

Across all routes, prioritize current, understandable tasks; transparent selection criteria; useful onboarding and community support; a fit with your interests and skills; and clear contribution and review requirements.
