On a Pixel, open Settings > Battery > Battery usage > View by apps to see which apps used battery during the period shown. Tap an app to check its background-use setting before deciding that background activity is the cause. Android menus vary by manufacturer and version, so treat this as a Pixel example.
Check app battery use in Settings
- Open the battery-usage screen. On a Pixel, go to Settings > Battery > Battery usage > View by apps. The screen lists apps and their battery use over the displayed period. Google’s Pixel instructions describe this route.
- Inspect an app that stands out. Tap its name and review the background-use setting. The usage list can reflect an app’s overall battery use, not just what it consumed while running in the background, so check the setting rather than assuming background activity is responsible. Google recommends leaving apps set to Optimized; controls may not be adjustable for every app.
- For another Android brand, look for the equivalent battery screen. Settings names and paths differ across devices and Android versions. If you cannot find app-level battery use or its background controls, follow your phone manufacturer’s support instructions. Google’s Android battery guidance also notes that steps vary by device.
What to change when an app uses a lot of battery
Keep optimization enabled
Leave the app’s battery use set to Optimized unless you have a specific reason to change it. Keep Adaptive Battery and battery optimization enabled: Google’s guidance says Adaptive Battery can reduce how much less-used apps run in the background, while turning optimization off can let an app run more when unused and consume more battery. Google’s Pixel battery guidance explains these settings.
Use force-stop or uninstall only as troubleshooting
If unusually high use continues, force-stopping or uninstalling the app may be an option. Force-stop is not a routine way to manage every app: Google warns that stopping essential apps or services can make the phone work incorrectly. Google’s troubleshooting guidance lists these actions and cautions against disrupting essential services.
Pixel diagnostics and battery drain after updates
On Pixel 6 and later, Battery diagnostics includes a Battery draining too quickly check. Google also says extra battery drain for a few days after a software update can be normal while the phone downloads and optimizes software. Pixel Battery diagnostics guidance covers the diagnostic, and Google’s battery-use guidance describes post-update behavior.

Why closing every app is not the answer
The recent-apps switcher is not the right place to identify which apps are consuming battery; use the battery-usage screen instead. Google says, “Even if you don’t close apps, you won’t run out of memory or battery. Android manages these automatically.” Google’s Pixel app guidance explains why manually closing apps is generally unnecessary.
