To find a classic movie in the Apple TV app, search by its title, cast, or genre, or browse the app’s featured categories and Store collections. Open the film’s page before deciding: it shows which options are currently available in your country or region, such as playing through an app or channel, renting, or buying. Not every classic is included with a subscription or offered for rent.

Find a classic movie by searching or browsing

Search when you know what you want

  1. Open the Apple TV app and select Search.

  2. Enter a movie title, performer, or genre. Apple says the Search screen can find movies by title, cast, and more; descriptive searches may also help when you do not know the exact title. See Apple’s guide to finding things to watch.

  3. Choose a result to open its movie page. Depending on the title, that page may include ways to watch, a Watchlist option, a trailer, and related items.

Browse when you want ideas

Look through featured categories and curated collections in the app. In the Store, collections can include charts, new releases, and deals. Open a collection or a film to see its details; a collection listing is not a guarantee that every movie is available to play in your region. Apple describes Store browsing and transactions in its Apple TV Store guide.

Check how the movie is available before choosing

Use the options shown on the individual movie page as the deciding point. A title may be available through another app or channel, for a one-time rental, or for purchase; the exact choices vary by film and location. Apple notes that title availability can change in its rental guidance.

Option shown What it means What to check
Play or an option through an app or channel The page offers a route to watch the movie through the indicated service or channel. Check the listed route and whether it is available to you; do not assume the film is included in a subscription you already have.
Rent You pay for temporary access to the movie. Confirm you can start within 30 days of renting. Once playback begins, you have 48 hours to finish.
Buy You purchase the movie for your Apple TV app Library. Confirm the title page offers purchase in your region and check the available video and audio formats.
No relevant viewing option The page does not currently show a way to watch that suits you. Availability varies by title and region and can change, so check again later if needed.

Apple’s rental rules and availability qualification are in its Rent movies from the Apple TV app article. The Store’s purchase and rental options are also covered in Apple’s Apple TV Store guide.

Find a purchase or rental in your Library

After buying or renting a movie, open Library in the Apple TV app to locate it. For a rental, the 30-day period is the time allowed to start playback; after playback starts, the 48-hour viewing period applies. Apple’s Library guidance for iPhone describes managing items in the app.

Choose a format your setup can play

Before selecting a high-quality version, check the movie page’s format indicators and make sure your device, display, and connection support that format. Apple’s format guide identifies 4K as 3840 × 2160 pixels and HD as 1920 × 1080 pixels, and recommends a minimum internet speed of 25 Mbps for 4K streaming. Apple also says 4K versions cannot be downloaded. The recommendation applies to 4K streaming; it is not a guarantee that every connection at that speed will provide uninterrupted playback.

Watch on a supported device

The Apple TV app is documented for multiple device types, so an Apple TV 4K box is not a prerequisite. Apple TV 4K is one way to use the app on a television; it does not itself determine whether a particular movie is available. See Apple’s overview of Apple TV 4K, Apple TV HD, and third-generation Apple TV for Apple’s device guidance.
