The Atacama’s Desierto Florido—the “flowering desert”—is an occasional spring display triggered by unusual winter rain, not an annual event or a blanket of flowers across the region. For 2026, a forecast published by Chile Travel on August 21 projected a broad bloom beginning in early September, peaking in the second half of October, and potentially lasting into November. Check local bloom reports, official park notices, and road updates before choosing a destination: a forecast cannot guarantee flowers at a particular site or an open route.

Protect the display while you visit: stay on established roads and marked trails, keep out of flower fields, leave plants and seeds in place, and take your rubbish away. CONAF’s 2026 visitor guidance sets out the rules.

How to check where flowers are blooming

Start with recent local information rather than a fixed itinerary. Rainfall and other local conditions shape where the flowers appear and how extensive a display becomes. Even within a season, blooms do not appear uniformly, and the more than 200 annual and geophyte plant species described by CONAF do not all flower at once. CONAF’s description and 2026 guidance explain the phenomenon; Chile Travel’s August 21, 2026 guide provided the season forecast.

For 2026, Chile Travel named Huasco, Freirina, Vallenar, Caldera, Copiapó, and Chañaral as areas to consider. It also highlighted Llanos de Challe National Park, Parque Nacional Desierto Florido, Caleta Chañaral de Aceituno, and Totoral. These are candidate areas, not a guarantee that every place is in bloom. The same guide reported that some flowers had appeared by mid-August, while projecting the broad display would peak later in the season.

On August 20, the Atacama Regional Government said it was planning five information and education points in coastal Freirina, coastal Huasco, areas associated with Llanos de Challe National Park, Parque Nacional Desierto Florido, and Travesía near Copiapó. These were planned points, not confirmed visitor-center openings. Check the regional government’s announcement and current local updates before relying on them.

Choose a destination by what is confirmed

  • Bloom nearby: Look for recent, location-specific reports. A regional forecast or a photograph from elsewhere does not establish current conditions at your destination.
  • Access: Confirm the road is open and suitable for your vehicle, and check for current restrictions or works.
  • Rules and protection: Check the relevant park’s visitor information and follow its marked routes and instructions.
  • Services: Confirm transport, fuel, food, and other local services independently. CONAF recommends using tourism providers registered with SERNATUR.

Where the named destinations are—and what the park protects

Parque Nacional Desierto Florido lies about 30 km south of Copiapó, according to CONAF’s park page. Created in 2023, it covers 57,107.4 hectares in two sections, Travesía and Chañarcillo, separated by Ruta 5. It protects desert shrub habitat and places where the flowering phenomenon occurs episodically. The wider Desierto Florido display is not limited to the park.

Copiapó is a practical point from which to plan a visit to the national park south of the city, but confirm lodging, services, and travel times for your specific itinerary. Do not assume that San Pedro de Atacama is a base for the destinations listed here.

Road access: treat route information as time-sensitive

On September 17, 2026, the Dirección de Vialidad reported four routes enabled for visitors while recovery and maintenance work continued after July and August rainfall. That report is dated; it does not establish that these roads remain open or unchanged now. Check the Dirección de Vialidad notice and fresh official updates before setting out.

Route reported enabled Connection described by Vialidad
Ruta 5 at km 777, then C-382 Toward Parque Nacional Desierto Florido; C-370 connects via Barranquilla toward coastal C-10.
C-390 from Ruta 5 Toward Bahía Salada, then connect to C-10.
C-440 in Huasco Province Toward Llanos de Challe National Park, through Carrizal Bajo, and links to coastal C-10.
C-46, then C-480 To Caleta Los Bronces in Freirina.

Vialidad advised visitors to plan ahead, drive carefully, obey signs, and stop only in safe places. Do not pull over on a narrow or unsafe stretch just because flowers are visible.

Check park hours separately

CONAF’s current listing for Parque Nacional Desierto Florido gives opening hours as Tuesday through Sunday, 9:00–18:00, with last entry at 18:00. Because park operations can change, verify hours, entry conditions, and access directly with CONAF before travelling.

How to visit without damaging the flowers

Follow CONAF’s 2026 instructions throughout the visit:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Drive only on established vehicle roads and walk only on marked tracks and trails.
  • Park and stop only in designated, safe places; never drive onto a flower field.
  • Do not step on, handle, cut, or collect flowers, seeds, or bulbs.
  • Leave pets at home; do not feed or disturb wildlife, and avoid loud music.
  • Take rubbish back to town for disposal.

Photograph the display without entering it. The governor of Atacama also urged visitors not to litter, bring pets to flowering sites, or pull flowers, in an August 20, 2026 regional government statement. Read the full CONAF guidance and follow any additional instructions posted on site.

Why the 2026 display is drawing attention

The Associated Press reported on October 1, 2026, that some locations received 160, 180, or 190 millimeters of rain—described by CONAF Atacama biodiversity official César Pizarro as the most significant volumes since records began. Those figures apply to some locations, not the entire desert. The AP also reported a National Tourism Secretariat forecast of nearly 300,000 overnight trips by the time the phenomenon ends in November; that is an expectation, not a final count. See the Associated Press report for its account and attribution.

The size of the display is not a settled, directly comparable measurement in the available reports: Chile Travel relayed a CONAF projection of up to 15,000 km², while AP reported an estimate of 17,000 km². These are distinct attributed projections or estimates, not a single confirmed area.
