On an HP laptop, look for a key labeled Prt Sc, Prt Scr, or Print Screen, usually among the top-row or function-key legends. Pressing it normally copies the entire screen to the Windows clipboard. If the key is a secondary function, hold Fn while pressing it. To save a full-screen PNG automatically, press Windows + Print Screen (or Fn + Windows + Print Screen when the model requires Fn). For a selected rectangle, open Snipping Tool.

HP does not use one keyboard layout across every laptop. The location, Fn behavior, and available shortcuts can vary by model, Windows configuration, keyboard, peripherals, and software, so use the manual for your exact HP model when a marking or shortcut is unclear.

Find the Print Screen key on your HP laptop

Check the key legends

Scan the top row and the secondary symbols printed on the function keys. The same control may be abbreviated as Prt Sc, Prt Scr, or written as Print Screen. On a compact keyboard, the Print Screen marking may share a key with another command rather than having a dedicated key.

A legend printed in a different color or alongside a small icon usually indicates a secondary action. On most laptop keyboards, HP says you must hold Fn before pressing the key bearing the desired symbol. Some HP laptops therefore use Fn + Print Screen, while others respond to Print Screen by itself.

Do not assume one universal location

HP’s support documentation cautions that keyboard functions and shortcuts vary with the computer, operating system, peripherals, keyboard, and software. If you cannot identify the marking, search the support material for the exact model number printed on the laptop or its original documentation. A model-specific manual is more reliable than a shortcut chart for a different HP series.

Choose the result you need

Goal Keys or app Result Where it goes
Copy the whole screen Print Screen, or Fn + Print Screen Image of the entire desktop Windows clipboard
Copy the current window Shift + Print Screen Image of the active window Windows clipboard
Save the whole screen Windows + Print Screen; add Fn if required PNG file Pictures > Screenshots
Capture a selected area Snipping Tool 自由-selected portion with editing tools Save from Snipping Tool

The clipboard methods do not create a file until you paste and save the image in another application. The Windows-plus-Print-Screen method creates a file directly.

Copy the entire screen with Print Screen

  1. Arrange the desktop exactly as you want it captured.
  2. Press Print Screen. If the marking is a secondary function, hold Fn and press the marked key instead.
  3. Open an image-capable application, document, or message composer.
  4. Use that application’s paste command to insert the clipboard image.
  5. Save or send the pasted image from that application if you need a permanent file.

This method is useful when you want to annotate the image immediately or paste it into an existing document. It is also the quickest way to test whether the key is working: a successful press places an image on the clipboard even though no notification or file may appear.

Copy only the active window

  1. Click the window you want to document so it is the active window.
  2. Press Shift + Print Screen, using Fn as well if your HP layout requires Fn for the Print Screen marking.
  3. Paste the result into an image-capable application.

HP documents this combination as copying the current window rather than the whole desktop. Anything outside that active window is not part of the captured image.

Save a full-screen PNG automatically

  1. Press Windows + Print Screen. On an HP laptop that assigns Print Screen to a secondary key, press Fn + Windows + Print Screen.
  2. Open File Explorer and browse to Pictures > Screenshots.
  3. Open the newest PNG. Windows uses sequential names such as Screenshot (1).

This shortcut is the appropriate choice when you want a file without first pasting into another program. If nothing appears, confirm that the key combination matches your model and inspect the clipboard using the copy-and-paste test described below.

Capture a selected area with Snipping Tool

Print Screen is screen-wide or window-wide. For a particular control, paragraph, or region, use Windows’ built-in Snipping Tool.

  1. Open Start and search for Snipping Tool.
  2. Launch the app and choose its capture command.
  3. Select the portion of the screen you need.
  4. Use the tool’s basic editing controls if required.
  5. Save the resulting image from Snipping Tool.

Some HP products include a dedicated Snipping Tool key, but that key is present only on select models. If your keyboard has no such marking, opening the app from Start is the model-independent method.

Where screenshots are saved

Files created by Windows + Print Screen

Full-screen captures made with Windows + Print Screen are PNG files in the Screenshots folder inside the Pictures library. Open File Explorer, select Pictures, and then open Screenshots. Sequential names make the newest image easy to identify.

Images made with Print Screen alone

Print Screen by itself copies pixels to the clipboard; it does not, by that action alone, place a file in Pictures. Paste the image into an image-capable program and use that program’s save command if you need a file.

Images made with Snipping Tool

Snipping Tool presents the capture for editing and saving. Choose the save command in that app and select the destination and format offered by the dialog.

What to do when Print Screen appears to do nothing

  1. Try the Fn combination. Press Fn together with the key carrying the Print Screen legend. A secondary legend is a strong indication that this is required on your layout.
  2. Check the clipboard, not just the screen. Print Screen commonly gives no visible confirmation because its output is an image in memory. Paste into an image-capable app; if the image appears, the shortcut worked.
  3. Use the file-producing shortcut. Press Windows + Print Screen, adding Fn where appropriate, and inspect Pictures > Screenshots.
  4. Confirm the active-window requirement. Shift + Print Screen captures the window that currently has focus. Click the intended window before repeating it.
  5. Check the exact keyboard layout. Compare the marking and shortcut instructions with the manual for your model. HP explicitly notes that behavior can change with the laptop, operating system, keyboard, peripherals, and software.
  6. Try Snipping Tool. Open it from Start to capture a selected area or to determine whether the issue is limited to the physical key.
  7. Inspect for a physical fault. If the key is damaged or does not register in any compatible combination, the problem may be hardware rather than a Windows screenshot setting. This article assumes the key is physically functional.

Practical choices and limitations

When to use clipboard capture

Choose Print Screen or Shift + Print Screen when you immediately need the image in a message, document, or editor. You control the final filename and format when you save it from the destination application.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When to use automatic file capture

Choose Windows + Print Screen when you want a PNG stored without an intermediate paste. Remember that this destination is Pictures > Screenshots, not the desktop or Downloads folder.

If your actual goal is to capture web pages repeatedly, an API avoids opening a browser and arranging a laptop screen. ScreenshotNeo returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF from one GET request. Before capture it accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers.

See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for parameters. The same service also offers an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
