To judge what a paper establishes, trace its claim back to the observations, methods, figures and uncertainty—and distinguish a candidate from a validated or confirmed planet.
Where to find exoplanet research papers
Search the literature in SAO/NASA ADS
SAO/NASA ADS is a literature search service for astronomy and physics. Search by a planet or star name, or by a focused phrase describing the question you have—for example, a planet’s atmosphere or a detection method. ADS supports searches by author, exact phrase, identifier and year range, and includes arXiv e-prints.
That means results can include both journal publications and preprints. Check each record for publication or journal information before describing a paper as peer-reviewed or published. Open the record and follow its available full-text links to reach the paper.
Check catalog context in the NASA Exoplanet Archive
The NASA Exoplanet Archive collates and cross-references information about exoplanets and their host stars, and provides tools for working with those data. Use it to check identifiers, catalog entries and a planet’s listed status alongside the paper you are reading.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The Archive is context, not a replacement for a paper’s methods and evidence. Its overview points to Christiansen et al. (2025) for current descriptions of the Archive; older descriptions may not reflect its current holdings or tools.
How to read a paper and assess its claim
- Start with the abstract. Identify the question the authors asked and the result they report.
- Read the conclusion. Note how the authors interpret the result and any qualifications they state.
- Return to the methods and data. Look for the observations used, the analysis or model, comparison baseline and uncertainty estimates. These details show how the result was derived.
- Check the figures and tables. Match the paper’s main claims to the evidence shown; note what each measurement represents and which assumptions or inputs it depends on.
- Follow important citations. Earlier or later papers may clarify whether the work presents an initial candidate, validates a signal, confirms a planet or characterizes a known world.
NASA describes discovery as a process of analyzing observations and testing whether a signal still fits a planetary explanation before scientists write a formal paper and submit it for journal review. As NASA puts it, “After thoroughly analyzing the data, and running tests to make sure that their result still looks like the signature of a planet, scientists write a formal paper describing their findings.” The checklist above is a practical way to follow that reasoning in a paper; it is not a formal rule for evaluating every study.

Keep the conclusion within the evidence
A measurement is not always a direct reading of a planet’s property. NASA notes that the transit method can yield a planet’s radius from the light it blocks and the star’s size. The reported radius therefore depends on both the observed signal and information or assumptions about the host star. When summarizing a result, include those dependencies and the paper’s stated uncertainty rather than presenting an estimate as exact.
Candidate, validated and confirmed are different statuses
Do not promote a candidate to a confirmed planet just because it appears in a project candidate table. Check the paper’s wording and the relevant NASA Exoplanet Archive table definition and current status.

NASA’s educational overview distinguishes validation from confirmation. It describes validation as a label that may be used when observations from different telescopes and scrutiny support greater than 99 percent confidence. That is the overview’s explanatory framing, published in 2018—not a universal statistical rule for every discovery claim. Read the specific paper’s method and status language, and report the label it actually supports.
What the Archive’s counts do—and do not—tell you
The NASA Exoplanet Archive listed 6,375 confirmed planets and 939 TESS confirmed planets on 2026-10-01. It listed 8,148 TESS project candidates on 2026-09-25. These are dated snapshots, not permanent totals; check the Archive for current figures when you need a live count.

The distinction between the confirmed and candidate counts matters: a project candidate count is not a count of confirmed planets. Use the Archive’s definitions and individual entries to understand what a count includes, then consult the underlying papers for evidence and methods.

For a broad introduction to the field, Michael Perryman’s The Exoplanet Handbook, second edition covers detection, formation, interiors, atmospheres and habitability, with extensive references to research literature. Published in 2018, it is useful for foundational context but cannot include later results or live catalog changes. Pair it with recent papers and the current Archive when investigating newer findings; the book is optional, not a prerequisite for reading research.
