To find a leak in an inflatable paddle board, inflate it within its specified limits and apply soapy water around the valve, seams and board surface. Bubbles show where air escapes. Mark the spot, deflate the board, then clean, dry and repair it with material-compatible adhesive and a patch if needed. Follow the board and repair-product instructions for parts and curing.

Check whether temperature is making the board feel soft

A board that feels softer after a cool night may not have a puncture: cooler air can lower pressure. One inflatable SUP manual reports a pressure change of ±4 mBar (0.06 PSI) per 1°C temperature variation in the tube. That is a statement from that manual, not a universal specification for every board. If the board softened as temperatures fell, check it again under comparable conditions before assuming it is leaking.

Find the leak with soapy water

  1. Inflate the board within its stated limits. Start by inspecting the valve, checking for sand or debris and confirming the gasket is in place.
  2. Apply soapy water. Work around the valve and its perimeter, then inspect the seams and the rest of the board surface. Bestway recommends checking the whole item, starting at the valve; Tower also recommends spraying an inflated board.
  3. Watch for bubbles and mark the spot. Bubbles forming where the water is applied identify escaping air. Tower’s instruction is to “spray soapy water across surface” and look for bubbles; the SUP manual likewise identifies bubbles as the leak location.
  4. Continue checking if air loss persists. Inspect the remaining surface and seams rather than stopping after the first leak; a full-surface check can reveal another leak.

Repair a small puncture or patchable leak

  1. Mark the leak, then deflate the board. Do not attempt the repair on an inflated board.
  2. Clean and dry the repair area. Use repair material compatible with the board’s skin, such as PVC or vinyl where specified by its maker.
  3. Choose glue or a patch according to the damage and the instructions. A Home Depot-hosted SUP manual says a puncture under 1/8 inch may be treated with a small drop of suitable glue and that larger leaks can be patched. Its patch procedure calls for a rounded patch with about 1/2 inch overlap, adhesive on both the patch and repair area, a short wait until tacky and firm pressure. Those dimensions and steps belong to that particular manual; follow your board and adhesive makers’ directions if they differ.
  4. Allow the adhesive to cure before using the board. The cited manual says to wait 24 hours, but cure times vary. Use the repair-material maker’s stated cure period rather than assuming every adhesive needs the same time.

Check whether the board’s repair kit includes adhesive before buying supplies. Tower’s PVC patches are sold without glue, and Tower specifies marine PVC glue for its kit. A generic-looking patch or adhesive is not necessarily suitable for every board material.

Troubleshoot bubbles around the valve

If bubbles appear at the valve, check its seating and base, clear away debris and confirm the insert is tight before patching the board skin. Aqua Marina’s 2017 manual advises checking valve seating and tightening the insert; if the leak persists, it says a replacement valve may be needed. Glide describes snugging a valve with a valve wrench, but avoid overtightening. Valve designs differ, so identify your board model and follow its maker’s advice before ordering a replacement part or using a tool.

When to seek manufacturer help

Routine small punctures may be repairable with a compatible patch or adhesive, but damage beyond a straightforward puncture—or a valve that still leaks after basic checks—may need model-specific parts or advice. Contact the board maker if you cannot identify the material, the damage is extensive, or the recommended repair method is unclear.
