To find a hidden Unicode character, reveal or inspect the document’s underlying text, identify the character’s code point, and check how it is being used before removing it. Invisible characters can control line breaks or text direction, so deleting every character that looks blank can damage otherwise correct text.
Why invisible Unicode characters appear in documents
Some Unicode characters have no visible glyph or take up no space in ordinary display, but they still affect how software interprets text. For example, U+200B ZERO WIDTH SPACE marks a possible word or line break. Unicode says it is intended for writing systems that do not use visible spaces between words, including Thai, Myanmar, Khmer, and Japanese. Its name does not guarantee that it can never affect rendering in a particular layout. Unicode Standard, Version 16.0, §23.2.
Other invisible characters serve different purposes. U+200E LEFT-TO-RIGHT MARK, U+200F RIGHT-TO-LEFT MARK, and U+061C ARABIC LETTER MARK influence text direction; they do not create word-break opportunities like U+200B. Unicode also defines paired bidirectional controls, which need to remain coordinated when text is edited. Removing one without considering its counterpart can change how surrounding text is interpreted or displayed. See the Unicode Standard, Chapter 23 and Unicode Bidirectional Algorithm.
A blank-looking spot can also be caused by a soft hyphen, nonbreaking space, word joiner, or another character. The visual symptom alone does not identify the code point or tell you whether it is unwanted.

How to find the character safely
- Make a copy or save a recoverable version. Keep the original intact so you can compare the layout and restore text if an edit causes problems.
- Use a tool that exposes Unicode controls. Microsoft describes a Windows 11 Notepad mode labeled “Show Unicode control characters,” which can reveal characters such as U+202E RIGHT-TO-LEFT OVERRIDE and U+202D LEFT-TO-RIGHT OVERRIDE. Availability depends on the installed Notepad version; confirm the feature is present rather than assuming a particular menu path. Microsoft’s Windows 11 Notepad article.
- Determine the code point. Record the exact character, not just its apparent position. If the editor shows only a symbol or marker, use a Unicode-aware inspection method that identifies the code point. Do not assume all editors display controls the same way.
- Read the surrounding text and check the script and direction. A zero-width space may be useful in languages that need line-break opportunities without visible spaces. Direction marks or controls may be necessary where right-to-left and left-to-right text appears together.
The documented Notepad feature is one option, not evidence that Word, Google Docs, or another editor has the same controls or menus. Choose an inspection workflow that identifies characters, supports the document’s scripts, and lets you make a reversible edit without needlessly changing formatting.
How to decide whether to remove a character
Remove or replace an instance only after you have identified it and determined that it is unintended in that particular text. For a U+200B, check whether removing the line-break opportunity would make the text harder to read or cause undesirable wrapping. For directional marks or controls, examine nearby mixed-direction text and preserve the intended order. When controls are paired, do not delete just one without checking the pair and the resulting display.

There is no dependable Find and Replace escape sequence established here for both Word and Google Docs. Once you know the code point, consult the current documentation for your editor before using a search pattern or bulk replacement. If the editor cannot reliably target that character, use a Unicode-aware inspection workflow rather than replacing every visually blank position.
Remove confirmed unwanted instances and verify the document
- Target only the confirmed character. Make a narrow edit in the copy, replacing or deleting the identified unwanted instance. Avoid broad cleanup rules that strip all format characters.
- Check bidirectional controls as a set. If the character belongs to a paired control sequence, keep the controls coherent and confirm the rendered order after editing.
- Review the affected passages. Compare the edited document with the original, checking line breaks, mixed right-to-left and left-to-right text, links, and identifiers near each change.
- Keep the original until the result is verified. If the display, wrapping, or text order has changed unexpectedly, undo the edit or restore the saved copy and reassess the character’s role.
What Google Docs API behavior does—and does not—tell you
Google’s Docs API documentation says certain control characters (U+0000–U+0008 and U+000C–U+001F) and BMP private-use characters (U+E000–U+F8FF) are stripped from text inserted through the API.
