Search below cold surface biomes and look for Packed Ice, Calcite, Icicles, and occasional Ice Crystals—but there is no published guaranteed coordinate, frequency, or universal way to locate one. The feature is described in Java snapshots and Bedrock Preview/Beta testing; the reviewed sources do not confirm it is available in a stable release.
Are Ice Caves in Minecraft yet?
As of the official test-build notes dated October 6, 2026, Ice Caves are included in Java 26.4 Snapshot 3. Mojang’s September 30, 2026 Bedrock Preview 26.60.29 notes also list them as an experimental feature for the upcoming 2026 drop. These are test-build descriptions, not confirmation of availability in a stable release. Details may change before release.
The Java notes describe the feature as: “The Ice Cave is a new cave biome that can generate under the colder biomes in the Overworld.” (Minecraft Java Team, 26.4 Snapshot 3 notes.)
Where do Ice Caves spawn?
Look underground beneath colder Overworld biomes. Bedrock’s Preview notes phrase the condition as biomes with low temperature. This is a useful starting point, not a guarantee: the official notes give no exact coordinates, generation frequency, or seed-independent locating method. A cold surface biome may have no Ice Cave beneath the area you explore.

Do not mistake the surface Ice Spikes biome for an Ice Cave. Ice Spikes is a separate snowy surface biome whose packed-ice formations can extend underground; seeing one does not establish that an Ice Cave is below it. (Mojang’s Ice Spikes biome guide.)
How to access the feature safely
You need the test route for your edition, and availability can vary by platform and build. Before switching versions, make a separate test world or back up any world you care about. Mojang warns that test versions may be unstable and can corrupt worlds; Java worlds created with feature toggles may not be upgradeable to later snapshots or releases.

How to recognize an Ice Cave
Once underground, look for a cave environment dominated by Packed Ice and Calcite. The official notes also describe hanging Icicles, larger Packed Ice Icicles on floors and ceilings, occasional snow patches, and Ice Crystals. Ore pockets can appear in Stone and Deepslate.

- Bedrock-specific terrain notes: Dirt and Granite do not generate in the described biome, and Glow Lichen is absent.
- Lighting: Ice Crystals emit light. Bedrock’s Preview notes identify them as the only light source found in Ice Caves.
- Not every feature is guaranteed in every cave: snow patches and Ice Crystals are described as occasional.
Hazards and mobs to expect
Falling Icicles
Java’s snapshot notes warn that falling Icicles damage entities, with extra damage to entities that land on them. Pointed Icicles break when exposed to nearby light sources. Watch overhead and avoid standing beneath unstable formations while exploring.
Strays and Frostbites
Strays and Frostbites can spawn alongside the cave mobs that normally appear. Frostbite melee attacks apply the Freezing effect, and Frostbites can throw Ice Balls. Treat the biome as hostile territory rather than assuming its ice formations are the only risk.

What is not known about finding them
The official Java and Bedrock test notes describe the biome’s broad generation conditions and features, but they do not publish a locator, coordinates, rarity rate, or guarantee that a particular cold biome contains one. They also do not establish when Ice Caves will reach a stable release or whether the final version will match the current test-build behavior. Use a current matching test build and regard exploration details as subject to change.
