First check whether Windows uses a product key at all: many Windows 10 and 11 PCs activate with a digital license, which has no 25-character key to copy. If you do have a key, where to find it depends on how you bought Windows. Check your activation status, then follow the purchase route below.
Check whether Windows has a product key to find
A Windows product key is a 25-character code used to activate Windows. A digital license is a different activation method; it does not require you to enter a key. Some free upgrades from eligible earlier Windows versions and certain Windows Pro upgrades bought through the Microsoft Store app use a digital license instead of a key. Microsoft explains the difference and where keys may be supplied.
Check the Activation page before searching your computer or paperwork:
- Windows 11: Open Settings > System > Activation.
- Windows 10: Open Settings > Update & Security > Activation.
If Windows reports that it is activated with a digital license, there may be no key to retrieve. Microsoft says a digital license can be linked to your Microsoft account; that account can help identify the license if you later need to reactivate after a hardware change. See Microsoft’s activation guidance.

Find the key based on how you got Windows
Microsoft’s guidance points to different records and packaging depending on the purchase route. Check Microsoft’s product-key guidance if you need details for your specific purchase.
| How Windows was acquired | Where to look |
|---|---|
| Windows came preinstalled on a new PC | Check the PC packaging or the Certificate of Authenticity (COA) attached to the device. If you cannot find it, contact the PC manufacturer. |
| Boxed retail copy | Look for the label or card inside the Windows box. Contact the retailer if it is missing. |
| Digital copy from an authorized retailer | Search the purchase-confirmation email and the retailer’s digital locker or account. |
| Purchase from Microsoft’s online store | Search the confirmation email and your Microsoft account’s Order history. Microsoft says it keeps product-key records for purchases made through its online store. |
| Upgrade bought in the Microsoft Store app | Check the confirmation email, but do not assume it contains a key: in the applicable upgrade scenario, the purchase provides a digital license. |
| Volume Licensing agreement or MSDN subscription | Use the web portal for the applicable licensing program. |
| Refurbished PC | Ask the refurbisher for the key; Microsoft says the refurbisher must provide it. |
Check for an embedded OEM key with PowerShell
A Microsoft Q&A community answer—not Microsoft’s primary product-support instructions—suggests this PowerShell command to query the OA3 original product key exposed by the PC’s licensing service:

- STREAMLINED & INTUITIVE UI, DVD FORMAT | Intelligent desktop | Personalize your experience for simpler efficiency | Powerful security built-in and enabled.
- OEM IS TO BE INSTALLED ON A NEW PC with no prior version of Windows installed and cannot be transferred to another machine.
- OEM DOES NOT PROVIDE SUPPORT | To acquire product with Microsoft support, obtain the full packaged “Retail” version.
- PRODUCT SHIPS IN PLAIN ENVELOPE | Activation key is located under scratch-off area on label.
- GENUINE WINDOWS SOFTWARE IS BRANDED BY MIRCOSOFT ONLY.

- Open PowerShell.
- Paste the command and press Enter.
- If a key is returned, copy it from the console and store it securely.
This checks for an embedded OEM firmware key only. It is not a universal key finder and does not retrieve every retail key or digital license. A blank result does not mean Windows is unlicensed; the key may be associated with another purchase route, or the device may use a digital license. Read the Microsoft Q&A community guidance for this query.
Reinstall Windows without retrieving a key when you have a digital license
If the device has a digital license, Microsoft says you can reinstall the same Windows edition and choose “I don’t have a product key” during setup. Windows can activate online afterward. Use the same edition that was licensed, and, where applicable, sign in with the Microsoft account linked to the digital license. Microsoft’s reactivation guidance covers digital licenses and hardware changes.

What to do after a major hardware change
A significant change, such as replacing the motherboard, can prevent Windows from finding a license matched to the device and may require reactivation. Linking a Microsoft account to the digital license beforehand can help with the hardware-change reactivation workflow. Use the Activation settings page and Microsoft’s reactivation instructions for the steps that apply to your Windows installation. Read the hardware-change reactivation instructions.

Microsoft describes activation as pairing the product key or digital entitlement with the device’s hardware configuration. It also cautions that activation does not evaluate whether a copy is authentic or guarantee that it is genuine. Finding a key or seeing an activated status is therefore not, by itself, proof of authenticity. See Microsoft’s explanation of Windows activation.
