Before adding an open-source dependency, inspect the exact repository, package, and release line you plan to use. Check its fit, license, support status, release and issue history, security practices, and the package that will enter your build. No single signal—such as recent commits, popularity, or a scorecard badge—proves that a project is safe or will remain supported.

Start with the exact project and version

Project-level signals do not automatically describe every release. Record the repository URL, package coordinates, and version you are considering, then confirm that the repository is the upstream project rather than a similarly named fork. Check that its documented language, platform, interfaces, and supported versions meet your needs.

Read the license and verify that it permits your intended use. If you need a particular feature or compatibility guarantee, check that it applies to the release you plan to adopt—not merely to the project in general.

Check whether the project is still supported

Look for an archived or read-only repository, a maintainer announcement, a named successor, or a published support policy. An archived repository is a strong signal to investigate alternatives or establish an explicit maintenance plan, but it does not by itself mean the software cannot be used. OpenSSF Scorecard gives archived projects its lowest result for its Maintained check; that is a heuristic, not a universal verdict on usability. OpenSSF Scorecard’s Maintained check documentation advises: “A lack of active maintenance should signal that potential users should investigate further to judge the situation.”

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Read releases and changes in context

Compare the latest release with the project’s own release cadence, supported versions, and the pace of change in the ecosystem. A long gap may be normal for a mature utility that rarely needs changes; it is more concerning when the project handles security-sensitive work or depends on fast-changing platforms.

  • Read release notes to see whether changes address real user needs, compatibility, or defects.
  • Check whether security fixes reach the release lines your team would use, including older or long-term-support versions where applicable. The OpenSSF evaluation guide includes timely bug and security fixes, and support for older releases, among its evaluation considerations.
  • Look for patch releases and how the project communicates breaking changes.

Assess maintenance and maintainer responsiveness

Recent commits are useful only when considered alongside what changed and how maintainers handle user needs. Review issue and pull-request discussions for responses, decisions, and follow-through; where visible, check how vulnerability reports are handled. A large commit count or busy issue tracker alone says little about whether the release you need is receiving appropriate attention.

OpenSSF Scorecard’s Maintained check considers project age, recent commits, archive status, and collaborator, member, or owner activity on issues. Its documented check applies only to GitHub projects more than 90 days old, so younger projects need manual inspection. For its top Maintained result, Scorecard uses a heuristic of at least one commit per week during the previous 90 days. It can also award a partial result based on certain maintainer issue activity. These are Scorecard criteria, not universal minimums for a healthy project; Scorecard itself notes that small utilities may not normally need frequent maintenance. See the Maintained check details.

Inspect security practices, not just activity

Look for a SECURITY.md file or another clear private route for reporting vulnerabilities, along with guidance on what reporters should expect. Review whether changes receive peer review, whether important branches are protected, and whether dependency updates are managed. Where relevant to your environment, examine release integrity and provenance.

OpenSSF Scorecard checks several of these areas, including security policy, code review, branch protection, dependency-update tooling, packaging, and other supply-chain signals. Treat each result as a prompt to inspect the underlying evidence. Scorecard describes its checks as heuristics and recommends using structured results when you care about specific properties instead of relying only on an aggregate score. OpenSSF Scorecard can help organize that review, but neither an individual badge nor a total score certifies a dependency as safe.

Review project-provided security information

Read the security policy and look for a security-insights.yml file, often in the repository root or a conventional source-forge directory. OpenSSF describes Security Insights as machine-readable information that complements a plain-text SECURITY.md and a software bill of materials (SBOM); the Security Insights specification explains the format. The OSPS Baseline guidance recommends it for security information that platform APIs do not easily audit.

Check the package and dependency changes entering your build

Inspect the exact package version your build will consume and its transitive dependencies, not just the source repository. Confirm where the package is published, what version is being introduced, and whether its license and release information match your needs.

For GitHub repositories with the necessary product and repository configuration, GitHub dependency review can show dependency changes, release dates, licenses, dependents, and age. A repository owner can configure a failed check to block a pull request. Availability depends on the repository and product configuration; do not assume the feature is enabled or generalize its behavior to other code hosts.

Compare candidates on the same questions

If more than one dependency could work, evaluate each against the same needs rather than ranking projects by one public metric.

Evaluation area What to compare
Fit Required behavior, platform and language support, compatibility, and continued support for the features you need.
Maintenance and responsiveness Release history, user-relevant changes, issue and pull-request handling, and maintainer continuity relative to the project’s normal cadence.
Security response Private reporting route, observable response history, patch delivery, review and branch controls, and supported release lines.
Package and supply-chain practices License, dependencies, package publication, release integrity or provenance, and review of changes entering your build.
Operational exit cost How readily you can pin, replace, migrate from, or maintain a fork of the dependency.

The OpenSSF evaluation guide recommends selecting candidates against actual needs and evaluating security and sustainability. GitHub dependency review supplies some concrete change metadata for package comparisons, subject to its configuration requirements.

Keep metrics in perspective

Stars, forks, downloads, open issues, commit totals, and badges can provide context, but they do not establish that the current version fits your use, receives the fixes you need, or can be maintained. OpenSSF’s evaluation guide also cautions that its listed tools and services are examples; even good open-source software can perform poorly on particular evaluation questions.

Interpret quietness according to the software’s role, the pace of its ecosystem, and the consequences of an unpatched defect. A low activity signal can be acceptable for a stable, low-change component if you document why; for a critical or rapidly changing dependency, require stronger evidence of compatibility and response.

Make the adoption decision operational

Record the evidence you reviewed, what remains unknown, who owns the decision, and what the team will do if upstream support slows. For a high-impact dependency, decide in advance whether you can pin a known version, monitor for fixes, upgrade, replace the package, or maintain a fork. The OpenSSF evaluation guide offers a broader framework for assessing security and sustainability against a project’s actual needs.
