If a photo contains GPS coordinates, you can copy them from its location or metadata details and paste them into Google Maps. Enter latitude first, then longitude—for example, 41.40338, 2.17403. The important catch: a location shown by a photo app may have been added or estimated, rather than saved as GPS in the original image.
First, check whether the photo has a location
In Google Photos on a computer, open the photo and select Info to view its details. Google Photos on Android also documents ways to manage photo locations and browse photos in a Places or map view; exact controls can vary by app version.
A location shown in Photos does not necessarily mean the image file contains GPS coordinates. Google says a photo may have a location if the camera saved it, if someone added a location, or if Photos estimated one using landmarks and other photos. Those sources are not interchangeable: an estimate can help you orient yourself, but it is not proof of an embedded GPS tag. See Google Photos’ Android location guidance.
Read coordinates from the image file when needed
If the app shows a place name or a map but not the coordinate pair, inspect the actual image file with a metadata viewer that reads EXIF GPS tags. Cloudinary’s Photo Location Viewer describes a browser-based workflow for reading a photo’s GPS data and provides an option to open the result in Google Maps.

Consider privacy before sending a personal image to an online viewer: the photo itself may contain sensitive details beyond its coordinates. A local metadata tool can avoid uploading the image to that service. If a viewer finds no GPS tags, that does not establish where the photo was taken; location tagging may have been off when it was captured, or an app or export may have removed the metadata.
Enter the coordinates in Google Maps
- Copy the latitude and longitude from the photo’s GPS details.
- Open Google Maps and paste them into the search box as
latitude, longitude, with latitude first. For example:41.40338, 2.17403. - Press Enter or choose the search result to center the map on that point.
Google Maps supports decimal degrees (the simplest format to copy), degrees-minutes-seconds (DMS), and degrees-decimal-minutes (DMM). Keep the coordinate order straight: reversing latitude and longitude can take you somewhere entirely different. See Google Maps’ instructions for entering coordinates.

Create a link that opens a coordinate-centered map
For a shareable or reusable link, Google’s Maps URLs documentation describes opening a map centered on a latitude/longitude pair. A coordinate-centered request uses the map action and a center parameter; Maps URL requests require api=1. For example, the parameter values can be expressed as api=1 and center=41.40338%2C2.17403 in a Maps URL. The comma is encoded as %2C in this example. Use Google’s documented format for the complete URL and account for URL encoding when adding parameters. See Google Maps URLs documentation.
Keep location sharing in mind
Depending on how a photo is shared, Google Photos may include camera-provided or manually added location details. Google provides controls for location sharing in shared albums and conversations; review those settings before sharing images that could reveal a home, workplace, or other sensitive place. Hiding metadata does not hide what a recognizable landmark in the image may reveal. Google explains photo-location management and sharing in its Android help.

When managing many geotagged photos
The basic workflow requires no dedicated photo-management software: read a coordinate pair and search for it in Maps. For larger collections, software with GPS metadata tools can make viewing or editing locations across images more convenient. As one version-specific example, Corel’s PaintShop Pro version 22 documentation describes Map Mode for viewing and editing GPS data, entering latitude and longitude, and copying location details between images. That interface is an example, not a universal workflow; see Corel’s PaintShop Pro Map Mode documentation.
