To find a job online, define the roles and conditions you want, search several credible sources, check each posting’s requirements, tailor your application, and verify the employer and application route before sharing sensitive information. No single job site covers every opening, and a listing or verification badge is not proof that an opportunity is genuine.
Define what you are looking for
Before searching, write down the job titles you want and a few adjacent titles that describe similar work. Add your preferred location or remote-work limits, schedule, minimum salary needs, and any eligibility requirements that could rule out a role.
Use specific search terms instead of one broad query. For example, search a target title and a related title separately, then combine them with a location or a skill when the site supports it. This makes it easier to spot relevant openings without assuming every job board uses the same search tools.
Where to look for jobs online
Use more than one route: a job board, public employment resources, and the career pages of employers you would actually consider. The U.S. government’s job-search help page points job seekers to CareerOneStop, state job banks, American Job Centers, local newspaper sites, and libraries. These are U.S. resources; readers elsewhere should use their country’s official employment service and government career portals.

For U.S. federal jobs, USAJOBS is the central site. Employer career pages are also useful for checking that a vacancy exists and for applying through a route the employer identifies as official. LinkedIn likewise advises job seekers to use trusted application methods, such as an employer’s official career page: LinkedIn job-search safety guidance.
Choose sites by coverage and tools
There is no established winner among job sites. Compare them by whether they cover your occupation and location, show eligibility restrictions, let you filter by relevant criteria, offer useful alerts, and make clear whether applications stay on the platform or move to an employer’s system. For U.S. job seekers, consider whether local workforce-service support would help alongside online listings.

Narrow results and keep track
Apply filters that reflect your actual constraints, such as location, salary range, occupation, schedule, or experience where available. USAJOBS, for example, lets users search by keyword, occupation, agency, location, salary range, or pay grade; its saved searches can send daily, weekly, or monthly email notifications. Filter and alert options vary by site.
Keep a simple application tracker with the employer, role, posting link, date applied, resume version, and status. This helps you follow up appropriately and avoid losing track when you apply through more than one system. USAJOBS profiles can save jobs and searches and show application status, although some applications transfer to a hiring agency’s separate system.

Check a posting before you apply
Read the complete announcement rather than relying on a search-result snippet. Confirm that the duties fit, the location and schedule work, and you meet the stated qualifications. Check who may apply, what documents are required, the deadline, and exactly how the employer expects you to submit the application. Federal announcements in particular spell out eligibility and required materials, so missing an instruction can matter.
Tailor and submit your application
Use the posting’s stated qualifications as a guide to which relevant experience and skills to make clear in your resume and application. Be accurate: tailoring means presenting relevant evidence clearly, not claiming qualifications you do not have.
Rank #4
Follow the application route named in the announcement. On USAJOBS, applicants can upload or create resumes and keep up to five distinct resumes in a profile. That is a platform limit, not a recommendation to create five versions. Save the submitted materials and note the date and confirmation or status information so you can track the application.

Online platforms can carry legitimate openings as well as fraudulent listings. Independently locate the organization’s official website and look for the vacancy on its career page; when possible, apply through the route the employer lists there. A platform verification indicator may offer some assurance about a member or company page, but it does not guarantee that a particular recruiter, message, or job is safe.

Be especially cautious if an unexpected recruiter asks for money, requests sensitive information before a credible hiring process, or sends a check and asks you to return part of the funds. The Associated Press reported on October 28, 2024, on impersonation and fake-check job scams. AP quoted FTC consumer education specialist Alvaro Puig explaining that a fake check can initially appear as money in an account before a bank discovers the fraud days later: AP’s report on job scams. Do not send money to a supposed recruiter or return funds from a suspicious check. Report suspicious postings through the platform where you found them.
