Tap Unread at the top of WhatsApp’s Chats list to show conversations with messages you have not opened or have marked unread. Tap All to return to the full chat list. WhatsApp introduced this filter in April 2024; it is a preset view, distinct from the custom Lists added later.

How to find and use the Unread filter

  1. Open WhatsApp and go to Chats. Look at the filter bar at the top of the chat list.
  2. Tap Unread. The list narrows to chats containing messages you marked unread or messages you have not opened. WhatsApp describes the filter as a way to prioritize conversations you need to catch up on or answer (Meta’s April 16, 2024 announcement; WhatsApp Messaging).
  3. Tap All to go back. All is the default view and displays the full chat list.

The filters sit at the top of Chats so you can find conversations without scrolling through the entire inbox, a placement WhatsApp design leadership has also described (Design at Meta).

What the three original filters show

Filter What it shows Useful for
All The full default message list. Browsing all conversations.
Unread Chats with messages marked unread by you or not yet opened. Finding conversations to catch up on or respond to.
Groups Group chats, including Community subgroups, as described in WhatsApp’s launch announcement. Finding a group conversation.

These are views of your chats, not separate inboxes: choose the one that matches what you are trying to find, then return to All when you want the full list.

Unread filter versus custom Lists

Unread is a built-in preset based on message status. WhatsApp later expanded chat organization with customizable Lists, which let you create and edit groups of selected chats from the filter bar. Lists are for organizing conversations by your own criteria; they do not replace the Unread preset (WhatsApp Blog: Focus on What Matters With Custom Lists).

If the filter is not visible

WhatsApp said the filters began rolling out on April 16, 2024 and would reach everyone “in the coming weeks.” That describes the original rollout, not a current estimate for an individual account. Its current messaging page lists the filters, but WhatsApp’s cited material does not give a universal troubleshooting procedure for a Chats screen that looks different. Check that you are viewing the Chats list and look at its top filter bar; if the controls still are not there, consult WhatsApp’s current app help or product information rather than relying on the historical rollout date.

WhatsApp has not published adoption, usage, or time-saved statistics for this feature in the cited materials, so its practical benefit is simply a faster way to narrow the visible list when you want to focus on unread conversations.
