To factory reset an accessible Samsung Galaxy device, go to Settings > General management > Reset > Factory data reset, review what will be erased, then tap Reset and Delete all. A factory reset removes personal data and downloaded apps, so back up anything you want to keep first. If you’re locked out, Samsung documents a Recovery-menu reset, but Google account verification may be required afterward.
Choose the right kind of reset
Samsung’s Reset menu includes options with very different effects. Choose Factory data reset only when you intend to erase the device.

Samsung’s menu labels and screens can differ by model, software version, and wireless provider. Its US reset instructions describe the common Settings route and the effects of the different reset options.
Prepare before erasing the device
- Back up what you want to keep. Photos, videos, documents, and other personal information may not be recoverable after a reset. Samsung Support warns: “Please save any information you need prior to the factory reset because your personal information may not be recovered.” See Samsung’s factory reset guidance.
- Decrypt an encrypted microSD card first. Samsung warns that the device may not be able to read the card afterward if it remains encrypted.
- Check your account credentials. Make sure you can access the Google account used on the device and, if signed in, know the Samsung account password. Account verification can prevent you from completing the reset or setting up the device afterward.
- Make sure the device can connect to a network. Samsung’s US instructions say a network connection is required to log out of a Samsung account before completing the reset.
Factory reset from Settings
- Open Settings > General management > Reset > Factory data reset.
- Review the information on screen, including the accounts and data listed for removal.
- Tap Reset, then tap Delete all to confirm. The device may ask for your screen-lock credential. If a Samsung account is signed in, Samsung says its password is required to complete the reset.
- Wait for the device to restart. It will return to the initial setup screen.

Reset a Samsung device when you’re locked out
If you cannot unlock the device or reach Settings, Samsung UK documents using the hardware buttons to enter Recovery and select the wipe or factory-reset option. Button sequences and Recovery screens can vary by model, so follow the instructions for your exact device in Samsung UK’s Recovery guidance.
A Recovery-menu reset erases the device, but it does not bypass Google Device Protection. After the wipe, the phone may ask for the Google account that was previously associated with it. Samsung explains this protection in its Google Device Protection guide.

If account verification prevents setup
If you cannot remember the required Google credentials, use Google’s account-recovery process rather than attempting an unofficial bypass. Samsung says an authorized service center may be able to help when you provide proof of purchase. It also notes that changing an account password can trigger a waiting period before the credentials work for verification. Contact Samsung Support for guidance if you remain blocked; there is no universal self-service bypass established in Samsung’s instructions.
If you are resetting the device before giving it to someone else, confirm that you can complete the account sign-out and setup-related checks before handing it over. Samsung’s reset and Device Protection guidance explains the account requirements and post-reset verification.
