What to do when your squad needs to leave
- Decide to extract before taking another fight or detour. In the original DMZ, death cost Operators the contents of their Backpacks. Once the squad has decided to leave, prioritize the exit over optional looting. Activision’s November 2022 tactical overview documents this loss rule.
- Pick the route and assign jobs before triggering it. For a standard exfil, agree on who calls it, who covers likely approaches, who deals with AI, and who handles a teammate needing recovery. The call makes the site visible on all squads’ Tac Maps and brings AI combatants toward it.
- Keep the squad together and cover the arrival window. Treat the helicopter site as exposed to both AI and rival Operators. Hold the area long enough to board, but do not linger after the squad is aboard.
- If the site is untenable, assess an alternate route. Hostage Rescue, a purchasable Private Exfil, or a fueled Heavy Chopper could offer another way out in the original mode. Each has its own availability or prerequisite; none should be treated as risk-free.
- Use final exfil as a last deadline, not a comfortable fallback. It appears after the marked exfil points have been used, still must be called, and the aircraft leaves after a brief window. Operators still outside when it departs are listed MIA.

Coordinate before calling a standard exfil
A standard exfil call is a public signal, not a private pickup. Activision’s original overview says the location is marked for all squads and AI combatants swarm the site. That means a rushed, unassigned approach can leave the squad reacting to threats from two directions.

When to switch to an alternate extraction
Hostage Rescue
In the original DMZ, delivering a hostage provided an extraction option. It is a possible alternative when a standard site is visibly dangerous, but it depends on the objective being available and reachable. It is not established as a guaranteed nearby or uncontested route.

Private Exfil
Season 03 added a Private Exfil purchasable at a Buy Station and available at an unused exfil point. Consider it when the squad can meet those prerequisites and wants another extraction option; the official description does not say it removes the danger of being attacked.
Heavy Chopper
The Season 03 Heavy Chopper began without fuel. Its special fuel could be found around the airport; after fueling, the aircraft could fly out of bounds to trigger an extraction countdown. This is a specific legacy-mode mechanic, so do not assume it exists in another DMZ version.

Should you stop to recover a teammate?
The original DMZ allowed squadmates to pick up downed Operators. A teammate killed in squad-based DMZ could also be revived at the death location through a longer process, according to Activision’s November 2022 overview. Recovery can preserve the squad’s strength, but attempting it keeps teammates committed at that location while threats may remain.
- Attempt recovery when the rest of the squad can provide cover and the route or time window still allows an exit.
- If the site is exposed and the team cannot cover the attempt, weigh the recovery against the risk of losing more Operators.
- Do not assume a revive is instantaneous; the published overview describes the dead-teammate recovery as a longer process but gives no duration.
What the upcoming Modern Warfare 4 DMZ changes—and what remains unknown
Activision’s June 6, 2026 preview announced a persistent Modern Warfare 4 DMZ experience with multiple extraction options, including helicopters and skyhooks, and a planned October 23, 2026 launch.
