You can often make an Android phone last longer without switching off 5G: start by reducing screen use, check which apps are draining power, and limit sustained high-demand activities. Android settings and menu names vary by phone and software version, and Battery Saver may switch some 5G-capable Pixels to 4G depending on the carrier.
Start with the display and battery-use list
The screen is a practical first place to cut power use. Lower brightness and choose a shorter screen timeout so the display turns off sooner when you stop using the phone. If your phone offers them, automatic brightness and Dark theme may also help. Google notes that some battery-saving steps depend on the device and Android version.
Next, look at battery usage instead of closing every app. Check for apps using an unusually large amount of power in the background, then adjust or restrict those you do not need running freely. The exact battery-usage screen and controls vary by manufacturer; Google’s general steps are at Android Help.
Use background battery controls where available
Adaptive Battery and per-app battery optimization can reduce background activity for apps you do not use often. Leaving these features enabled is a reasonable set-and-forget choice when they are available. There are trade-offs: optimization can reduce app performance or delay notifications. Reduce sustained high-drain activity when you can
You do not need to avoid these activities altogether; reducing their duration can help when you need the phone to last until a charger is available. Google identifies hotspot or tethering use, prolonged GPS, long navigation sessions, streaming, video, and graphics-heavy games as activities that can shorten a charge.
- Turn off a hotspot when other devices no longer need it.
- For a long trip, consider whether navigation can be paused when it is not needed.
- Limit extended streaming, video playback, or demanding games when battery is low.
Keep the phone cool
Heat can increase battery drain even when the phone is not in use, and Google warns that it can damage the battery. Avoid leaving the device in hot conditions, and reduce demanding use if it is getting unusually warm. On supported Pixels, check Adaptive connectivity
Adaptive connectivity is a Pixel feature, not a setting you should expect on every Android phone. Google lists it for Pixel 4a (5G) and later, including Pixel Fold, and notes that some US carriers may limit availability. It is worth checking if you have a supported Pixel and want the phone to manage connectivity automatically while keeping 5G available when appropriate. Follow the model-specific instructions in Google’s Pixel battery guidance.
Check what Battery Saver does to 5G on your phone
Do not assume Battery Saver preserves 5G. Google says a 5G-capable Pixel may use 4G while Battery Saver is on, depending on the operator network. If you need 5G to remain active, check the behavior on your exact phone and carrier before relying on Battery Saver. Google’s details are in Use Battery Saver on a Pixel phone.

If battery drain continues
Review battery usage for apps or activities consuming power, then consult the phone maker’s support instructions for your model. Android versions and manufacturers expose different settings and diagnostics, so a path that applies to a Pixel may not exist on another phone. Google’s general Android guidance notes that some steps apply only on Android 13 and later; Pixel-specific instructions may have different device and version requirements.
