Request the archive, download and inspect it, and store it securely before deleting chats, activity, shared links, or the account. The instructions below cover personal ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini accounts; work and school accounts may have administrator-controlled settings.
Before you start: choose what you want to keep or remove
First identify the exact product and whether you use a personal or organization-managed account. An export can include sensitive information, so protect the download link and the archive. OpenAI specifically warns users to keep both secure in its ChatGPT export instructions.
- Request an export from the account and product you actually use.
- Download it within the provider’s stated link window, then open it and check that it contains what you need.
- Store the archive somewhere private. Offline storage, such as a hardware-encrypted USB drive, is optional; verify the device’s encryption and compatibility rather than assuming every USB drive encrypts its contents.
- Separately delete the conversations, activity, shared links, or account you no longer want, using the relevant controls below.
Export and delete data from ChatGPT
Request a personal-account export
While signed in to an eligible personal account, open Profile menu > Settings > Data controls > Export data and confirm. Alternatively, use OpenAI’s Privacy Portal: select Make a Privacy Request, identify the account as a consumer ChatGPT account, and choose Download my data. You may need access to the account’s email address or phone number to verify ownership. OpenAI’s export help page says preparation can take up to 7 days; the download link expires 24 hours after it arrives. Download the ZIP while signed in to the same account that requested it. The archive includes chat history and other relevant account data, but OpenAI does not describe it as a complete copy of every item associated with every product.
Know when the export control is unavailable
Self-service export is unavailable in ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, and Healthcare workspaces. Ask the workspace owner about organization-managed access, and request and verify any export you need before a personal workspace is removed or moved.

Delete chats, change training use, or delete the account
Turning off Improve the model for everyone in Settings > Data controls affects whether new conversations are used to train OpenAI models; it does not delete conversations from chat history. To delete the account, follow OpenAI’s current account deletion instructions. If you cannot sign in, OpenAI says you can submit a deletion request through the Privacy Portal. Check the current deletion flow for its effects on subscriptions and account access before confirming.
Export or delete information from Claude
Start an export on the web or desktop
Anthropic says individual Claude users can export user information and chat history through Settings > Privacy in Claude on the web or Claude Desktop. The export cannot be started from the Claude iOS or Android app, so use the web app or desktop client instead. See Anthropic’s export instructions for the current controls.

Use the current privacy guidance for deletion
Export availability does not establish the current archive format, delivery time, link expiry, or account-deletion sequence. For deletion, consult Anthropic’s current privacy resources and follow the instructions that apply to your account before removing it.

Build an archive with Google Takeout
Sign in to the Google Account you use with Gemini and open Google Takeout. Select Gemini for Gems data. To include chats, generated media, uploads, and other Gemini Apps activity, select My Activity and then choose Gemini Apps in the activity-data selection. Google notes that the archive may not include changes made after you request it but before it is created.

Takeout can email a download link or deliver the archive to supported storage services. Google says archive creation can take from a few hours to a few days, and many people receive the link the same day; an emailed link remains active for 7 days. Downloading does not delete the original data from Google’s servers. See Google’s Gemini Apps export instructions for current details.
Delete Gemini activity or turn off Keep Activity
For a personal account, open Gemini Apps Activity from the Gemini app’s activity controls or from Google My Activity. Review and delete selected activity, a time period, or all activity, or turn off Keep Activity. Work or school account activity settings are controlled by the Workspace administrator.

Turning off Keep Activity does not mean every conversation disappears immediately. Google says conversations may be held for up to 72 hours to provide the service and process feedback, even when they do not appear in Gemini Apps Activity. Google describes deletion as first removing data from view and then proceeding through deletion from its storage systems, not as instantaneous erasure from every backup. Check related content separately
Deleting activity may not remove every associated item. A shared public link can require its own deletion, and deleting data from a connected app does not delete the corresponding copy or conversation in Gemini Apps Activity. If a setting is missing or your data seems incomplete
- Check the account and client. Use the same account that holds the data. Claude exports require the web or desktop client; some organization-managed settings are controlled by an administrator.
- Check the archive before deleting anything. If the archive does not contain an item you expected, consult the provider’s current help page before assuming the item was included or removed.
- Look for related records. Gemini shared links, connected-app data, activity, and account-level data can have separate controls.
- Ask an administrator when controls are managed. For work or school accounts, contact the organization’s administrator if export or deletion controls are absent or disabled.
