To get spreadsheet-ready comment rows, use a CSV-capable comment plugin and review its permissions and columns. For a WordPress content archive, use Tools → Export and select All content; that creates WXR XML containing comments, not a dedicated CSV. For one person’s privacy request, use Tools → Export Personal Data instead.

Export comment rows to CSV with a plugin
If you need email addresses in spreadsheet-friendly rows, choose a plugin whose current listing documents CSV export and the filters you need. For example, the WordPress.org listing for Comments Import & Export describes filtering by article, start date, end date, and limit. Confirm that the plugin’s current version is appropriate for your site and that your account role is allowed to export the intended data.
That permission check matters: the plugin changelog records an access-control fix dated September 14, 2026, for an issue that had allowed Author-role users to export restricted comment data. Check the installed version and role permissions rather than assuming that export access is properly restricted.
Before relying on a CSV, inspect its columns and a sample of the output to verify that it contains the fields you need, including email addresses where applicable. Exported commenter emails are personal data, so keep the file private and limit access to people who need it.

Use WordPress core to export content as WXR XML
- In the WordPress admin dashboard, open Tools → Export.
- Select All content to include comments along with posts, pages, custom fields, terms, menus, and custom posts.
- Choose the download option to generate the WXR XML export file.
This is suited to a WordPress-oriented content archive or import workflow, not a ready-made spreadsheet. The WordPress export documentation describes WXR output and inclusion of comments under All content; it does not describe a comment-only email CSV. If you process the XML into a spreadsheet, inspect the resulting fields before using the data.

For a request from one person to receive the personal data your site holds about them, use Tools → Export Personal Data. WordPress describes an email-based workflow with validation and manual approval. WordPress core registers a comments personal-data exporter; the developer reference identifies it as “WordPress Comments” and says the privacy tools were introduced in WordPress 4.9.6. The resulting ZIP archive covers data held in WordPress and by participating plugins, but it may not cover information stored in other systems. WordPress encourages email validation to reduce impersonation and says, “We strongly encourage you use the email validation feature built into the export tools.” See the WordPress Privacy documentation for the workflow and its scope.

Protect the export and preserve a real backup
- Treat a file containing commenter email addresses as sensitive personal data. Restrict access and sharing.
- Do not treat a comment CSV as a restorable backup. The Delete & Disable Comments listing warns that its CSV includes all comment types and personal data, omits comment metadata, and cannot restore deleted comments.
- Before permanently deleting comments, make a full database backup. A CSV export is not a substitute.
