Selenium IDE downloads generated WebDriver source code to your browser’s download directory. The available targets can differ by installed version, so check the menu in your IDE.
Export a test or suite to WebDriver code
- Open the Selenium IDE project that contains the test.
- In the test list, right-click the individual test or suite you want to export.
- Choose Export from the context menu.
- Select a language and test-framework target shown in the menu.
- If available, enable origin-tracing comments to annotate generated code with the Selenium IDE step that produced it.
- Click Export. Find the generated source file in your browser’s download directory.
This is code generation: the exported file maps recorded IDE steps to WebDriver code that you can inspect and adapt. It does not automatically create a complete, ready-to-run project with all dependencies and configuration. See Selenium IDE’s Code Export guide.
Which languages and frameworks are available?
The Code Export guide lists these targets:
- C# with NUnit
- Java with JUnit
- JavaScript with Mocha
- Python with pytest
However, Selenium’s separate Code Export Plugin Support page lists Java JUnit, JavaScript Mocha, Python pytest, and C# xUnit identifiers instead. Both pages are dated 2019, and their C# framework references conflict. Treat them as documentation of supported export concepts, not a definitive compatibility matrix for a current installation. The reliable check is the target list in your own IDE’s Export menu.
Choose a target that fits your project
- Language: Choose a language your team already maintains.
- Test framework: Match the runner your project uses, such as pytest, Mocha, JUnit, or NUnit when offered.
- Runtime compatibility: Review and adapt the generated code and dependencies for the versions of your runtime and Selenium project. The documentation’s setup examples are historical; do not treat their pinned dependency versions as current recommendations.
- Customization: If the built-in output does not fit your framework, a plugin may extend an existing language or add a new one, but that requires plugin development rather than a regular export setting.
Code export is not test-result export
Use Code Export when you need WebDriver source code to develop or adapt. If you instead need a report from a command-line test run, the runner’s --output-directory and --output-format options save execution results in Jest/JSON or JUnit/XML formats. When you need a custom export target
Selenium IDE’s plugin route can augment an existing export language or introduce a new one. The plugin declares the relevant language ID in its manifest, or a vendor entry for a new language, then responds to IDE export events with generated content. This is intended for extension developers building custom integrations, not as a point-and-click end-user option. The plugin guide is dated 2019, so verify that its API matches the IDE version you use before investing in an implementation.
