NASA’s free browser-based Eyes applications let you explore Mars missions in 3D and follow focused experiences about communications, landing, and rover activity. To compare where NASA missions successfully touched down, pair those interactive tools with NASA’s downloadable Mars landing-sites map.
How can I explore Mars missions online?
Start with NASA Eyes, a suite of 3D visualization applications that runs in a regular web browser and uses NASA data and imagery. Its Eyes on the Solar System application provides a broad simulated view of planets, moons, and spacecraft, with time controls and mission context. NASA says the application visualizes mission data; in 2020, NASA/JPL’s Mars 2020 mission design and navigation manager Fernando Abilleira said, “Eyes on the Solar System visualizes the same trajectory data that the navigation team uses to plot Perseverance’s course to Mars.”
Use Eyes on the Solar System when you want general spacecraft and mission context. For a more specific Mars question, NASA lists several focused experiences on the same Eyes page.

NASA describes Eyes as browser-based, but that does not guarantee that every current device or browser will work with every experience. The NASA directory identifies the experiences and their general purposes; exact live interface labels and controls may vary.

Where did NASA’s Mars missions land?
Open NASA’s Mars landing-sites map for a static overview of Jezero Crater alongside places where other successful NASA Mars missions touched down. The map is available as a downloadable image, making it useful for comparing locations at a glance. NASA’s accompanying context-map description spans Perseverance’s landing at Jezero on February 18, 2021, back to Viking 1 and Viking 2 in 1976.
The map answers a different question from Eyes: it helps you compare landing geography, while Eyes provides interactive spacecraft and mission context. Use both if you want to connect a location on Mars with the mission that visited it.

Why is Jezero Crater important to Perseverance?
NASA/JPL identifies Jezero as Perseverance’s landing site and describes the crater as preserving evidence of an ancient lake and delta. The mission selected the site for its potential to preserve signs relevant to ancient microbial life. That scientific rationale is a search for evidence, not a finding that life existed there.
NASA/JPL’s Mars 2020 Perseverance Launch Press Kit gives Jezero’s width as 28 miles (45 kilometers). This is a geological measurement, not a study statistic.

A practical way to explore
- Open NASA Eyes and choose Eyes on the Solar System for a broad 3D view of spacecraft and mission context.
- On the Eyes page, choose a Mars-focused experience to match your question: Mars Relay Network for communications, Mars 2020 Entry Descent Landing for Perseverance’s landing sequence, or Experience Curiosity for rover activity.
- Open NASA’s Mars landing-sites map and use its downloadable image to compare successful landing locations.
- Look at Jezero on the map, then read NASA/JPL’s landing-site explanation to connect the location with Perseverance’s science goals.
