To find telescope observations and science files—including JWST data—use the Space Telescope Science Institute’s MAST archive. You can search and retrieve public data in a browser without an account; you do not need to write code or own a telescope to begin.
Choose a visual tour or an archive search
These routes answer different questions. NASA’s Hubble pages make it easy to browse selected imagery and educational features. MAST—the Mikulski Archive for Space Telescopes—is where you search observations and access science data products for JWST and other hosted missions.

Browse Hubble images without handling data files
To explore Hubble’s iconic images of the universe, use NASA’s Hubble Images page or the broader Hubble Multimedia collection. These are good places to discover objects and learn through curated media rather than sort through archive files.
NASA also offers online activities that let you zoom in on a cosmic object and see Hubble’s view. If you want to extend the experience outdoors, its night-sky guide suggests comparing an object with Hubble’s view. That is a separate, optional observing activity—not a step needed to access images or data online.

Search JWST observations in MAST
Use MAST when your goal is to find observations, inspect their details, or download science products. The MAST Portal is the cross-mission browser interface; MAST Web Access also documents the JWST Mission Search. Interface details can change, so use the current MAST documentation if a control or screen looks different.
- Open a MAST browser interface. Choose the Portal for a cross-mission search or JWST Mission Search for a JWST-focused route.
- Enter a target name or sky position. A familiar object is an easy first search. Refine the results by mission when needed.
- Inspect the observations. Review the result details and available footprints or previews to see what part of the sky an observation covers and whether it matches your target.
- Check access status. Public JWST data can be searched and retrieved without signing in. Data still within an exclusive access period require authorization.
- Select and retrieve a suitable product. Start with a calibrated product if you want to view or work with science-ready data, then download through the browser tools.
STScI’s JWST User Documentation states: “A MyST account is not required to search, view, explore with MAST tools, or retrieve data that have been released to the public.” That permission applies to public data, not every JWST file: restricted observations remain available only to authorized people during their exclusive access period. Choose a JWST product that fits your question
An archive “image” can refer to a public-facing processed image, a preview, a calibrated science image, or raw exposures. MAST contains more than images: products can include catalogs, extracted spectra, data cubes, uncalibrated exposures, engineering files, and other material. STScI describes calibrated products as an excellent starting point for getting started with JWST data.

Product names and availability depend on the observation. STScI’s Getting Started with JWST Data explains common calibrated products and when a more specialized analysis may call for reprocessing.

When to add code—and how to keep track of your work
For a one-off search, MAST’s browser tools support searching, exploring, and retrieving data without programming. If you later need repeatable queries or many downloads, follow the programming-interface and Astroquery resources linked from MAST Web Access.
If you analyze or share results, record which archive products and software you used. STScI’s JWST getting-started guidance links to citation instructions for JWST data and software, which help readers understand and reproduce your work.
