Use NASA’s Hubble Skymap to explore galaxies and other objects, then use a sky map or astronomy app set to your location and observing time to find where a selected target will appear. The map helps you plan; whether you can see a faint object depends on darkness, the Moon, weather, your equipment, and the target’s position above your horizon.
Which free astronomy app or sky map should you use?
For browser-based exploration, NASA’s Hubble Skymap lets you browse a selection of galaxies, stars, nebulae, and other objects. You can zoom, navigate the map, and select an object for more information. NASA’s Explore the Night Sky page also connects the map with Hubble-related catalogs and observing information.
To translate an object into a direction in your local sky, NASA recommends interactive maps such as Stellarium Web. A smartphone astronomy app can also show the sky for your location, and some use GPS to do so. On mobile, check the app listing for the features that matter to you: which objects are included without payment, whether it uses your location or phone orientation, whether it has a night mode, and whether it works offline. Free features and terms can vary by platform and version.
The current Google Play listing for Stellarium describes a base app with a sky simulation for any date, time, and location, deep-sky objects, and red night mode. The listing separates Stellarium Plus, an in-app purchase with a deeper catalog and advanced observing tools. Its listed update date is September 13, 2026. Do not assume that Plus features are included in the base app.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How do you find a galaxy in the night sky with your phone?
- Explore a target before heading outside. Browse NASA’s Hubble Skymap to choose an object that interests you. For initial observing ideas, NASA’s Messier and Caldwell catalog links offer selections of well-known deep-sky objects. NASA describes Messier objects as targets that backyard astronomers may observe with binoculars or a small telescope under a relatively dark sky. The Caldwell catalog includes targets in northern and southern skies. These are starting points, not guarantees that every object will be easy from your location.
- Set your observing location and time. Open an interactive map or app and enter your location, date, and planned observing time. If you use GPS, check that the displayed location is correct. NASA JPL’s sky-software activity demonstrates how to set those details and use an azimuthal grid.
- Check when the target is above your horizon. Use the map to note its direction and altitude at your planned time. Azimuth describes direction around the horizon; altitude describes how high the object is above it. A target below the horizon cannot be observed, and a low target may be obscured by buildings, trees, or terrain.
- Plan for the sky, not just the screen. Check local cloud, wind, temperature, and smoke conditions, along with the Moon’s phase and rise and set times. Artificial light and a bright Moon both brighten the sky and make faint objects harder to distinguish.
- Give your eyes time to adjust. Once outside, avoid bright white screens and lights. NASA’s May 2024 beginner guide says dark adaptation takes approximately 30 minutes and that bright light can temporarily disrupt night vision. Use a red flashlight or headlamp, or switch your phone to red mode or cover its screen with red cellophane.
Can you see deep-sky objects with binoculars?
Some catalog targets can be observed with binoculars or a small telescope from a relatively dark site, but that does not mean every galaxy will be visible in every pair of binoculars. Visibility depends on the object, equipment, darkness, weather, and observing conditions. A digital map or telescope image also shows more detail than a casual backyard view may reveal. For scale, NASA identifies the Whirlpool Galaxy, Messier 51, as 31 million light-years from Earth; that distance does not indicate how bright or easy it is to see.
Start with a catalog target identified as suitable for binoculars or a small telescope, and treat the app’s position information as a way to find where to look—not as a promise of what the object will look like through your equipment.

How dark does the sky need to be?
Light pollution from artificial lighting brightens the night sky and reduces contrast, making faint stars and deep-sky objects harder to see. NASA describes the Bortle scale as nine classes, from class 1, the darkest, to class 9, the most light-polluted. NASA says a class 3 or 4 location is dark enough for a great evening of stargazing for most people.
Use a light-pollution map as a planning aid, then consider the Moon separately: even a location with little artificial light can have reduced contrast when the Moon is bright. For unfamiliar observing sites, check the route and access rules in advance. NASA recommends scouting during daylight and arriving before sunset; also make sure the location is legally and safely accessible at night.
