Start with NASA’s Chandra Photo Album to browse released images, captions, handouts, and interactive wavelength comparisons. If you want observation-level files or scientific measurements instead of finished pictures, use the Chandra Data Archive (CDA). For a guided first step toward making images from data, try openFITS.
Choose a route based on what you want to do

These routes serve different purposes rather than forming a single ranking. Use the Photo Album for a finished visual story, openFITS for supported examples, and the archive or analysis tools when you need the underlying observations or measurements.
Browse and download a released image
- Open the Chandra Photo Album and browse by date, science category, or interest.
- Open an image entry to read its caption and see the available files. Some entries also offer interactive multiwavelength comparisons, handouts, or links to FITS data.
- Choose a format suited to your purpose. The image tutorial describes JPG, TIFF, and PostScript as common options and recommends JPG for ordinary web viewing; available formats vary by image.
- Save or print using your browser’s normal image controls. The Photo Album’s download and print tutorial dates to 2020, so its older platform-specific directions may not match a current browser.
Before republication or commercial use, check the live image-use policy linked from the Photo Album and follow the terms for that particular asset. Do not assume every image is unrestricted for reuse.
Understand what an X-ray image’s colors mean
Chandra’s images are visualizations: X-rays cannot be seen by human vision, so their displayed colors are assigned to make features easier to interpret. A common convention maps red, green, and blue to low-, medium-, and high-energy X-rays. The color choices and energy bands are representational, not the literal appearance of the object.

The bands are not universal. For example, the Chandra Cassiopeia A image maps red to 0.3–1.55 keV, green to 1.55–3.34 keV, and blue to 3.34–10 keV. Read the caption or image notes for the mapping used in any specific visualization before drawing conclusions from its colors.
Make an image from example FITS data
openFITS is a bridge between downloading a finished release and working with observation files on your own. FITS (Flexible Image Transport System) is a digital file format used mainly by astronomers. The site pairs selected Chandra datasets with tutorials, including a three-color Cassiopeia A example, a broadband Crab Nebula example, and a multiwavelength M101 composite.

Follow an example that matches the kind of result you want, and treat its selected files as teaching material rather than a complete archive search. The openFITS overview was revised in 2021; check the page itself for current files and directions.
Find observation data in the Chandra Data Archive
The Chandra Data Archive is the route for observation-level files and structured searches. Its Chandra Fast Image tool is described as a simplified quick-search option for the general public. ChaSeR (Search & Retrieval) supports detailed search criteria for scientific users. Publicly released observation products are available through direct access. CDA also links to the Chandra Source Catalog and services such as an observation-footprint search.

If your goal is simply to look around, begin with Chandra Fast Image rather than constructing a detailed query. Move to ChaSeR when you need more specific criteria or want to locate observation products systematically. The CDA homepage was modified in February 2024; use its live documentation for current archive instructions rather than relying on its older software-version information.
Use the Chandra Source Catalog for source-level information
The Chandra Source Catalog (CSC) organizes measured sources and detections; it is not a catalog of every observation in a single image. The page inspected for CSC 2.2, released in October 2026, reports 432,713 unique compact and extended X-ray sources and more than 1.4 million individual detections. Its public coverage includes ACIS and HRC-I observations released through the end of 2023, covering approximately 786 square degrees. Those figures describe CSC 2.2, not all Chandra observations ever made.

Catalog products include positions, significance, fluxes, hardness ratios, variability indices, images, PHA spectra, light curves, and sensitivity maps. Properties are organized at master, stack, and per-observation levels; check which level applies to the question you are asking before comparing values. CIAO is Chandra’s optional analysis software for readers who want to process or analyze data. The official page showed CIAO 4.18, CALDB 4.12.4, and Python 3.12 when checked on October 7, 2026. Versions change, so verify the release page before installing. It links installation methods, beginner science threads, a quick-start guide, analysis guides, Sherpa modeling, and DS9 image display.

You do not need CIAO to browse Photo Album releases or follow the selected openFITS examples. If you install it to reproduce an analysis, follow the current CIAO and archive documentation rather than mixing instructions from pages that list different software versions.
