Before downloading a free game, compare its recent and lifetime scores, read dated reviews for specific recurring details, and check whether language or off-topic settings affect the score you see. A positive percentage summarizes recommendations; it cannot tell you whether the game will suit your preferences or run well on your device.
What Steam’s review score tells you
Steam describes User Reviews as a way for players to share their experiences and say whether they recommend a game. The score categorizes reviews based on the percentage that are positive; it is not a personalized prediction or a guarantee of quality for every player. Steam Support explains how review scores work.
For a free game that does not require a purchase, Steam Support says all reviews count toward the score. Steamworks also says players who have launched a free game and have playtime can review it. That means the score is not limited to people who paid for the game. It still does not establish whether each reviewer’s experience matches yours.
Compare recent sentiment with the lifetime score
The lifetime score gives you a longer-term view; the recent score shows sentiment over a shorter period. Steamworks describes the recent score as covering the past 30 days. Steam’s user-facing guidance says a recent score may appear when a game has been released for more than 45 days and has enough recent reviews. The threshold for “enough” is not stated in that guidance, so a missing recent score does not by itself mean that current feedback is positive or negative.

Use the two scores to frame a question rather than settle it: has something changed? If recent sentiment differs sharply from the lifetime score, read reviews from the relevant dates and look for explanations such as a patch, launch issue, server trouble, or changed feature. Steam’s User Reviews documentation describes how recent and lifetime scores are presented.
Read reviews for evidence that matters to you
Look beyond short reactions and find reviews that describe what the player actually encountered. Repeated, concrete reports are more useful for judging fit than an unexplained “good” or “bad” vote. For example, check whether reviewers describe crashes, server reliability, progression, accessibility, monetization, or a feature that was added or removed. Then ask whether that issue matters to the way you want to play.

Pay attention to dates as well as details. A report tied to an older version may not describe the game as it is now, while a cluster of recent reports may point to a current problem. Steam’s review display also surfaces reviews using helpfulness and quality signals, so the most prominent reviews are selected rather than a random sample. Do not treat the top reviews as a representative poll of every player.
Check language and off-topic review settings
The percentage you see may depend on which reviews Steam includes. Steam can calculate a score from reviews written in your language when there are enough such reviews. Its August 18, 2025 announcement described this language-specific score display for some games. Steam’s default score also excludes review activity it has classified as off-topic; users can change Review Score Settings to include all reviews.

If the score seems inconsistent with the comments, check the language and Review Score Settings before concluding that the reviews contradict one another. A language-specific view and an all-language view can reflect different sets of reviewers, while including off-topic activity can change the score’s context. A sharp shift in review volume or sentiment is a reason to read the dated comments, not proof that every review is unreliable. Steam defines review bombing as a large number of players using reviews to express unhappiness and lower a score. The stated cause may concern a game problem or a dispute about business practices; determine what reviewers say happened before deciding how relevant the surge is to your download.

Steam’s default score treatment excludes review activity it classifies as off-topic, but that does not make every negative response off-topic or explain every score change. Steamworks discusses review bombing and review-score behavior in its User Reviews documentation.

A quick check before you download
- Note the lifetime score. Treat it as a broad summary of positive recommendations, not a promise that the game fits your tastes.
- Compare the recent score, if shown. Look for a change from the lifetime picture and read reviews from the period when the change occurred.
- Read several dated, specific reviews. Look for recurring issues or strengths that affect your priorities, and consider the reviewer’s stated playtime where available.
- Check the score’s scope. Consider whether you are seeing reviews in your language, the default off-topic filtering, or a view that includes all reviews.
- Use the findings to judge fit. Steam’s score mechanics cannot confirm that a reported bug still exists, that reviews represent all players, or that you will enjoy the game. For a concern that matters, check its date and whether the comments describe the same issue.
