Evaluate a semiconductor stock by tracing revenue and margin changes to operating drivers, then testing whether the valuation assumptions fit the company’s business model and place in the industry cycle. A single strong or weak quarter is not enough: demand, customer orders, product mix, pricing, manufacturing utilization, and fixed costs can all move reported results.
Start with the company’s business model and cycle exposure
Chip companies do not all earn revenue the same way. A fabless designer, an integrated manufacturer, and a contract foundry face different manufacturing exposure and cost structures. Identify the model first, then use the operating measures the company itself reports. Comparing gross margins or growth rates without that context can make unlike businesses appear more comparable than they are.
Semiconductor revenue can respond to end-market conditions, customer demand and order changes. Diodes Incorporated’s 2025 Form 10-K describes its business as highly cyclical and identifies economic and industry conditions, customer order levels, pricing, and acceptance of new products as factors affecting net sales. Treat those as useful questions to investigate, not a checklist that necessarily applies equally to every issuer. Diodes Incorporated 2025 Form 10-K.
Assess revenue growth across comparable periods
Compare several quarters and years, using the same fiscal period where seasonality could distort a quarter-to-quarter comparison. Then determine what drove the change rather than treating the growth rate as self-explanatory.

#1 Best Overall
- Shipments and demand: Did the company sell more units, or did end-market demand and customer orders change?
- Pricing and mix: Did average selling prices or the proportion of higher- or lower-value products shift?
- Product acceptance: Did new products or design wins contribute to sales?
- Inventory and orders: Are customers buying for current demand, rebuilding inventory, or reducing excess stock?
GlobalFoundries said in its 2025 Form 20-F that customers reduced some excess inventory built up in prior years, with inventory dynamics differing by customer and end market. Management also described demand as gradually normalizing across most major end markets in 2025. Those statements describe GlobalFoundries’ experience; they do not establish a uniform recovery for every semiconductor segment. GlobalFoundries 2025 Form 20-F.
Explain margin changes with operating drivers
Gross margin is gross profit as a share of revenue. Operating margin also reflects operating expenses. For either measure, look for the cause of a change: price, product or technology mix, production costs, manufacturing yields, utilization, or spending. A higher percentage alone does not show that profitability has improved permanently.

Product mix can be especially important for foundries. GlobalFoundries stated in its 2025 Form 20-F: “Product mix is among the most important factors affecting revenue and margins, as our wafer price varies significantly across technology platforms.” The statement illustrates why a margin shift needs an explanation tied to the company’s products and pricing, rather than a generic conclusion about efficiency. GlobalFoundries 2025 Form 20-F.
For foundries, check utilization and capacity costs
Foundries operate capital-intensive manufacturing capacity. When output falls, costs such as staffing, electricity, infrastructure, depreciation, and maintenance can remain significant. GlobalFoundries defines shipment utilization as wafer shipments divided by estimated manufacturing capacity and reported the following company-specific figures:
| Reporting year | Average shipment utilization | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 | 86% | GlobalFoundries 2025 Form 20-F |
| 2024 | 77% | GlobalFoundries 2025 Form 20-F |
These are GlobalFoundries figures, not benchmarks for other chipmakers. When comparing another manufacturer, use its own utilization disclosures and definition, if provided. GlobalFoundries 2025 Form 20-F.
Check customer concentration and company-specific risks
A company’s overall revenue trend can depend heavily on a small number of buyers. GlobalFoundries reported that in 2025 Customer A accounted for 16.4% of total wafer revenue, Customer C for 13.9%, and Customer B for less than 10%. These are figures for one issuer, not industry-wide statistics. Check each company’s filing for its own concentration disclosure and consider how a change in a major customer’s orders could affect revenue. GlobalFoundries 2025 Form 20-F.

Compare companies using relevant measures
Build comparisons around companies with reasonably similar business models and cycle exposure. Use the same reporting periods where possible, and check how each company defines its metrics. Useful dimensions include:
- Business model and manufacturing exposure
- End markets and sensitivity to cyclical demand
- Revenue growth drivers, customer orders, inventory, and backlog
- Gross and operating margin trends, product mix, and pricing
- Utilization and planned capacity needs, where relevant
- Customer concentration and cash generation
- Metric definitions and fiscal-period differences
These measures are not interchangeable across every semiconductor business. For example, onsemi’s 2025 Form 10-K lists net revenues, gross profit margin, segment operating income, end-period backlog, book-to-bill ratio, inventory turnover, average selling prices, net cash, and free cash generation among its performance metrics. These are potential lines of inquiry, not a universal scorecard. onsemi 2025 Form 10-K.

Evaluate valuation by making assumptions explicit
No single valuation multiple establishes whether a semiconductor stock is attractive. If you compare a multiple, identify the measure, the period, the company’s position in the cycle, and the peer group. A comparison between companies with different business models or cycle exposures may say little about relative value.
For a discounted cash-flow analysis, examine the assumptions for revenue growth, margins, reinvestment or capital needs, future cash flows, and discount rate. GlobalFoundries’ 2025 filing identifies future cash flows, expected revenue growth rates, royalty rates, technology migration, and the discount rate among assumptions used in a valuation method. That disclosure shows how much a valuation output can depend on estimates; it does not establish a fair value or recommended multiple for the stock. GlobalFoundries 2025 Form 20-F.
A disciplined review separates three things: reported historical results, management’s expectations, and your own estimates. The filings cited here do not provide current share prices, market capitalizations, forward estimates, or peer valuation multiples, so they cannot support a current price target or a conclusion that a named stock is cheap or expensive.
