Evaluate a robotic arm against the job it must perform and the complete cell it will operate in—not just its advertised payload or reach. Define the parts, tooling, required output, workspace, tolerances, interfaces, environment and safety responsibilities first; then verify that a candidate can meet written acceptance criteria in a representative trial.
What to define before comparing arms
Small-batch work can involve frequent part changes, variable tasks and operator handoffs. Those details affect the arm, end-of-arm tooling, fixtures, machine connections and safeguards. Write down the application before requesting quotes or comparing specifications.
- Parts and process: Identify part variants, weights, dimensions, orientations, tolerances, operation sequence and handoffs.
- Production target: State the required output and the conditions under which it must be achieved, including changeovers and operator interactions.
- Workspace: Map the machine opening, fixtures, approach and retract paths, mounting location and access needed for setup or service.
- Interfaces: List machine signals, PLC or fieldbus requirements, sensors, gripper controls and any data or recovery functions.
- Operating conditions: Document dust, moisture, temperature, cleanroom or process requirements, duty cycle and mounting orientation.
- Safety and ownership: Identify who will design and validate the integrated cell, train operators, maintain the system and provide parts or service.
Turn these into measurable acceptance criteria before evaluating a supplier proposal. There are no universal numeric thresholds for what makes an arm suitable for “small-batch” use; the required values come from the process.
How to compare candidates
Use the same application assumptions and evidence requests for every candidate. A maximum specification is a screening value, not proof that the complete cell will perform the task.

| Evaluation area | What to request or check | How to judge fit |
|---|---|---|
| Payload | Workpiece, gripper, mounting plate, sensors, hoses and cables, plus payload centre of gravity and inertia. | Check the manufacturer’s load limits at the relevant poses. Do not compare arms using the workpiece weight alone or rely only on headline maximum payload. |
| Reach and workspace | Machine opening, fixture locations, mounting orientation, approach and retract paths, and service access. | Verify the entire task path in an approved layout, drawing or simulation. A stated radius does not establish that the arm can reach every point or approach it as required. |
| Repeatability and process quality | Part tolerances, fixture variation, tool compliance and the specification’s measurement basis. | Compare the repeatability claim with the process tolerance and its test method. Validate actual cell output; the arm’s repeatability specification is not a guarantee of finished-cell accuracy. |
| Throughput | Motion, gripping and release, sensing, machine handshake, human loading, changeovers and fault recovery. | Time the complete intended cycle with representative parts and interfaces. No comparable independent model-level cycle-time figures are established in the sources cited here. |
| Safety | People’s access, tooling and workpiece hazards, speed, safeguarding, risk assessment and safety-related control functions. | Assess the integrated application and cell against requirements applicable to the destination market. Assign competent responsibility for integration and validation. |
| Environment and duty | Dust, moisture, temperature, cleanroom or process-specific conditions, duty and mounting. | Confirm documented ratings for every relevant component. Do not assume a standard arm is suitable for hygienic, explosive or otherwise severe environments. |
| Integration and ownership | PLC or fieldbus, I/O, machine signals, programming, recovery, training, backups, spare parts and local service. | Compare the complete cell and ownership plan rather than arm-only quotations. Comparable installed-cost and regional service-response figures are not established here. |
How to verify payload, reach and repeatability
Payload includes the tool
Account for everything carried by the arm, not just the part. A gripper, mounting hardware, sensors and routed cables or hoses all contribute to the load. Ask the manufacturer or integrator to check the permitted payload and load characteristics for the actual poses and motion. A candidate that meets a payload number in one configuration may not meet the limits in the task’s operating poses.
Reach is a path question
Check whether the arm can reach the pickup and placement points with the required orientation, and whether it can follow the approach and retract path without colliding with the machine, fixture or surroundings. Include mounting position and access for servicing in the layout review.

Repeatability is not finished-part accuracy
Repeatability claims describe the arm under a specified measurement basis; the result at the workpiece also depends on the tool, fixture, part variation and cell setup. Match the specification’s test basis to the process and measure representative output in the intended cell.
How to evaluate cycle time and changeovers
Do not treat the arm’s travel time as the production cycle. A useful timing trial includes the complete sequence: motion, gripping, release, sensors, machine communication, operator tasks and any planned inspection. Include realistic transitions between part variants if changeovers are part of the production target.

Ask the supplier to document the trial’s assumptions and timing method, then repeat the process with representative parts and proposed tooling. Record faults and recovery behavior as well as successful cycles; a fast nominal motion does not establish the throughput of a cell that frequently waits for a machine, operator or recovery step.
How to assess safety and standards
Safety is a property of the integrated application, not a label on the arm. A collaborative robot’s features do not by themselves establish that people can safely work beside the complete cell. The assessment must account for the end effector, payload, contact hazards, speeds, layout and people’s access.

ISO 10218-2:2025, published in February 2025, specifies requirements for integrating industrial robot applications and cells. Its scope includes design, integration, commissioning, operation, maintenance and decommissioning. The standard addresses hazards under intended use and reasonably foreseeable misuse, while some special applications or environments fall outside its scope; review the exact scope for the proposed application.
ISO 10218-1:2025 addresses the industrial robot as partly completed machinery, while Part 2 covers the integrated application and cell. For U.S. installations, Yaskawa Motoman describes ANSI/A3 R15.06-2025 as the national adoption of ISO 10218:2025 and says it should be used for systems intended to be installed after March 31, 2027. That is the manufacturer’s U.S. guidance; verify applicable adoption and transition rules for the actual jurisdiction and installation date.

What a specification sheet can—and cannot—tell you
As one concrete example, Universal Robots’ UR3e technical specification page lists the following values. They show useful fields for a comparison, not that this model fits a particular application.
| UR3e specification listed by the manufacturer | Listed value |
|---|---|
| Maximum payload | 3 kg |
| Reach | 500 mm |
| Rotating joints | 6 |
| Pose repeatability | ±0.03 mm per ISO 9283 |
| IP classification | IP54 |
| Controller communication options | Modbus TCP, EtherNet/IP adapter and PROFINET |
Confirm the current specification revision, configuration, tool load, mounting and intended use with the manufacturer. These arm-level fields do not establish the performance, safety or environmental suitability of a completed cell.
How to run a useful supplier trial
- Agree on the requirements. Share the written task, parts, tooling assumptions, interfaces, target output and acceptance criteria.
- Use representative equipment. Trial a representative part and proposed tooling; include the actual machine or interface where practical.
- Define the timing protocol. Specify where timing starts and stops, which operator actions count, and how changeovers and interruptions are treated.
- Exercise recovery cases. Test likely faults, restart and recovery steps, not only the ideal sequence.
- Record results and exceptions. Document assumptions, achieved results, limitations, extra guarding or integration work, and any unresolved requirements.
- Assign acceptance responsibilities. Identify who will validate the integrated cell and its safety measures before production use.
How to make the final selection
Shortlist only arms that satisfy the task’s load, path, process-quality, interface, environment and safety requirements, then compare their demonstrated performance and support plan. Ask for a complete cell proposal when integration, commissioning, training, safeguards or service are part of the decision. No single model can be recommended without the application, workpiece, tooling, required takt, environment, safety layout, country and budget; installed cost, payback, yield and actual cycle time require application-specific quotations and trials.
