Evaluate Broadcom as two economically distinct businesses: Semiconductor Solutions, where custom AI accelerators and AI networking are driving reported growth, and Infrastructure Software, where VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) is a major demand driver. Then test whether growth converts to operating income and cash, whether manufacturing and customer demand can sustain semiconductor delivery, and whether VMware customers accept the licensing transition and renew. Reported results show strong AI growth; they do not, by themselves, establish durable growth, customer retention, fair value, or an investment recommendation.
What the reported numbers say—and what they do not
Broadcom’s FY2025 annual report and its Q3 FY2026 results answer different questions: the annual report gives a full-year segment revenue split, while the quarterly release shows the latest reported consolidated and AI semiconductor results. Do not treat a single quarter as directly comparable with a full year.
| Measure | Reported figure | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| FY2025 total net revenue | $63.887 billion | Full fiscal year, Broadcom FY2025 Form 10-K. |
| FY2025 Semiconductor Solutions net revenue | $36.858 billion | Full fiscal year, Broadcom FY2025 Form 10-K. |
| FY2025 Infrastructure Software net revenue | $27.029 billion | Full fiscal year, Broadcom FY2025 Form 10-K. |
| Q3 FY2026 consolidated net revenue | $29.591 billion, up 86% year over year | Quarter ended August 2, 2026; Broadcom results release dated September 2, 2026. |
| Q3 FY2026 AI semiconductor revenue | $16.7 billion, up 221% year over year and 54% quarter over quarter | Broadcom’s reported quarter ended August 2, 2026. |
| Q3 FY2026 cash from operations and free cash flow | $14.2 billion and $13.7 billion, respectively; free cash flow was after $0.5 billion of capital expenditures and equaled 46% of revenue | Broadcom’s reported quarter ended August 2, 2026. |
| Q4 FY2026 revenue outlook | $34.8 billion consolidated revenue and $21.7 billion AI semiconductor revenue | Management forecast issued September 2, 2026; these are not reported results. |
The quarterly AI figures are evidence of substantial recent demand and growth, not proof that the pace will persist. CEO Hock Tan said in Broadcom’s September 2, 2026 results release that demand for custom AI accelerators and networking “continues to be very strong.” Treat that as management’s characterization, and judge it against subsequent reported results and the risks below.
How to assess the AI semiconductor business
Broadcom attributes AI semiconductor growth to demand for custom accelerators and networking. The business case depends on more than demand: Broadcom must continue winning programs, deliver the required chips and networking products at volume, and turn revenue into sustainable operating income and cash.
#1 Best Overall
Test demand breadth and durability
- Track reported AI semiconductor revenue across multiple quarters. Note both year-over-year and sequential growth, and whether the comparison base is becoming larger.
- Ask whether demand is broad across customers and programs or depends heavily on a small number of large deployments. Broadcom’s FY2025 Form 10-K identifies customer losses and changes in the timing and volume of customer demand as risks.
- Compare management forecasts with later reported results. A forecast is useful as a checkpoint, not as a substitute for realized revenue.
Check whether execution can keep pace
Broadcom’s FY2025 filing identifies reliance on contract manufacturing and a limited number of suppliers, as well as capacity, quality, and the ability to continue winning semiconductor business, as risks. These are practical constraints on converting AI demand into shipments. Look for evidence that production capacity and supplier availability support delivery, and watch for signs that timing, quality, or supply limits affect results. The filing identifies risks; it does not establish that a particular constraint has occurred.
Separate revenue growth from economics
Revenue growth does not show by itself how much profit the segment earns or how efficiently it uses capital. Compare segment operating income and margins over time, and distinguish GAAP figures from any non-GAAP measure. The FY2025 segment revenue split and Q3 consolidated cash figures above do not provide a like-for-like segment margin comparison. The cited FY2025 and Q3 materials do not state a segment operating-income figure in the facts presented here, so do not infer one from revenue or free cash flow.
How to assess VMware and Infrastructure Software
Infrastructure Software produced $27.029 billion of net revenue in FY2025. Broadcom’s FY2025 Form 10-K says segment growth was primarily due to strong VCF demand, including license revenue under certain non-terminable contracts and the transition to a subscription license model. That explanation is important: recognized revenue can reflect contract structure and licensing transitions, so it is not interchangeable with evidence of renewals, customer satisfaction, or recurring cash collections.
Look for customer acceptance, not just reported revenue
- Seek clear renewal and retention evidence, customer adoption, and realized pricing. The reviewed official materials do not establish an independent renewal or churn rate.
- Assess whether subscription economics are supported by ongoing customer use and renewals, rather than assuming that a subscription transition alone proves durable demand.
- Watch for customer acceptance, compatibility, virtualization demand, licensing agreements, product lifecycle management, and software competitiveness. Broadcom names these among risks in its FY2025 filing.
Put AI product positioning in context
Broadcom introduced VMware Private AI Cloud on August 31, 2026, presenting VCF as a platform for deploying and governing AI workloads on private infrastructure. This is Broadcom’s product positioning, not independent evidence that customers achieve particular cost, security, or deployment outcomes. Evaluate those claims using customer or third-party evidence rather than treating vendor-promised benefits as established results.

Compare the businesses on a like-for-like basis
The businesses have different demand drivers and operating constraints, but the same analytical questions help prevent a strong headline from obscuring weak economics or execution risk.
| Evaluation question | Semiconductor Solutions / AI | Infrastructure Software / VMware |
|---|---|---|
| Is reported growth durable? | Check growth across multiple quarters, program wins, customer demand timing, and concentration. | Separate contract and license revenue recognition from adoption, renewals, and realized pricing. |
| Does growth produce profit? | Review segment operating income and margins, distinguishing GAAP from non-GAAP measures. | Review segment operating income and margins on the same basis, and assess whether subscription revenue is sustained by customer demand. |
| Can the business deliver? | Assess contract manufacturing, supplier dependence, capacity, quality, and program execution. | Assess customer acceptance, compatibility, licensing agreements, lifecycle management, and competitive position. |
| What evidence supports the thesis? | Use reported results and compare them with management forecasts; treat forecasts as forecasts. | Look for renewal and retention evidence. The reviewed official materials do not state an independent renewal or churn rate. |
Use a consistent accounting basis and time period wherever possible. Do not compare annual segment revenue with quarterly consolidated revenue as if they measured the same period or scope. The Q3 cash figures are consolidated; they do not establish the cash contribution of either segment on its own.

Include debt, cash allocation, and forecast risk
Strong consolidated cash generation can help fund investment and debt service, but the Q3 cash figures alone are not a complete balance-sheet analysis. To judge resilience, compare cash from operations and free cash flow with debt service needs, capital spending, and cash allocation over time. Broadcom’s FY2025 filing lists debt service, integration and acquisition risks, and other business and regulatory risks; a listed risk is not proof that it has materialized.
Keep reported outcomes separate from management’s expectations. Broadcom’s Q4 FY2026 figures are outlook issued on September 2, 2026, not completed-period results. A thesis that relies on those targets should be treated as more dependent on future execution than one supported by results already reported.

A practical evaluation checklist
- Set the period and scope. Label every figure by fiscal year or quarter, segment or consolidated basis, and whether it is reported or forecast.
- Read both business lines separately. For semiconductors, examine AI demand and delivery capacity; for Infrastructure Software, examine VCF demand, licensing, and customer acceptance.
- Test growth quality. Compare revenue with segment operating income and margin trends, keeping GAAP and non-GAAP measures distinct.
- Check cash conversion. Review cash from operations, capital expenditures, and free cash flow, then consider debt service and cash allocation.
- Pressure-test concentration and execution. Consider customer timing and losses, supplier dependence, manufacturing capacity and quality, software compatibility, renewals, and competition.
- Mark what is still unknown. Do not fill gaps in segment profitability, customer retention, or independent product outcomes with assumptions.
- Revisit forecasts after results arrive. Compare guidance with subsequent reported results before treating a growth target as evidence of sustained performance.
