What should an AI governance platform do?
It should support an organization-wide, continuous process for identifying and managing AI risks, while providing controls that operate in the actual path an agent uses to take action. An inventory or framework map is useful, but neither proves that an agent is safely governed.
NIST’s AI Risk Management Framework organizes work into four functions: Govern, Map, Measure, and Manage. Governance informs the other functions; Map establishes context and potential impacts, Measure assesses risks, and Manage addresses them. NIST describes the framework as voluntary and says risk management should continue across the AI system lifecycle. See the NIST AI Risk Management Framework and its AI RMF Playbook.
How do I evaluate an AI governance platform?
Start with the workflows, data, and actions you need to govern. Ask vendors to demonstrate the same scenarios and provide comparable evidence. A useful evaluation moves from discovering the system, to testing controls at execution time, to checking how the platform records and manages what happened.

1. Map the system and its use
Ask what the platform can discover and record: agents, models, tools, connectors, owners, use cases, data classes, intended purposes, and downstream systems. Distinguish declared inventory—what teams say they run—from observed runtime activity. Check whether the inventory captures enough context to identify potential impacts, rather than simply listing components. NIST’s Map function is intended to help establish context and identify impacts; the AI RMF is a risk-management resource, not a vendor certification checklist.
2. Test controls at the point of action
For each workflow, verify that policy can restrict which tools an agent invokes, bind actions to a least-privilege identity, and prevent unauthorized writes or external sends. Find out whether the platform can stop or quarantine a risky action before the tool executes, bound the agent’s autonomy to its task, and record exceptions.
OWASP calls a broader failure pattern “Excessive Agency”: agents may have more functionality, permissions, or autonomy than their task requires. Its Excessive Agency guidance describes the risk and examples. Test the execution path your agents actually use; a policy that is documented but not enforced before an action is not an effective action control.

3. Check human review and escalation
Identify which actions require approval and what a reviewer sees before deciding. Confirm whether the agent pauses while review is pending, whether the reviewer can deny, constrain, or revoke the action, and what happens on timeout or review failure. The platform should record the decision and its outcome.
For high-risk AI systems within its scope, the EU AI Act includes human-oversight requirements. Whether a particular system or workflow is in scope depends on its use and legal context; the act is not a universal rule that every agent action requires human approval. Consult the EU AI Act text and determine applicability for your system and role.
4. Verify evaluation and monitoring across the lifecycle
Request methods and results for the exact workflow, model, tools, and policy configuration you plan to deploy. Check that the platform supports pre-deployment tests and repeatable assessments after changes to a model, prompt, connector, or policy. Ask how it tracks errors, incidents, policy violations, model versions, and remedial actions. NIST’s Measure and Manage functions emphasize assessing and addressing risk as systems and contexts evolve.

5. Inspect evidence and audit records
Ask to see a sample record and export from a real or buyer-controlled workflow. Determine whether records connect the initiating request, applicable policy, agent identity, model and version, tool calls, approvals, interventions, final action, and timestamps. Also check retention, access controls, export format, integrity protections, and integration with your SIEM or governance, risk, and compliance (GRC) environment.
For high-risk AI systems within the EU AI Act’s scope, the law includes risk-management and record-keeping requirements. A product’s audit capability does not by itself establish legal compliance. UiPath, for example, says its system records actions, prompts, responses, tool calls, model versions, and approvers; treat that as a vendor claim and verify it in a proof of concept.

6. Check framework mappings and their limits
Ask which exact version of NIST AI RMF, ISO/IEC 42001, or a regulation the platform maps to, what evidence supports each mapping, how updates are handled, and which controls remain your responsibility. ISO/IEC 42001:2023 specifies requirements and guidance for an organizational AI management system. The NIST framework is voluntary and under revision; the EU AI Act is regulation whose obligations depend on scope and role. These instruments are related, but they are not interchangeable.

For background, see NIST’s AI RMF page, the ISO/IEC 42001:2023 standard page, and the EU AI Act. A mapping can help organize diligence; it is not proof that your organization, a vendor, or a particular deployment complies.
7. Compare operational fit
Use the same scenarios, questions, and evidence requests with every vendor. Ask for a demonstration using your agent framework and connectors, because a product-page description does not prove a feature works in your environment. Compare identity design, policy authoring, administrative roles, deployment choices, data handling, integrations, reliability, incident response, evidence export, and the effort required to operate the platform.

- Read versus write: Give an agent read access to a repository, then attempt a write or delete operation. Confirm the control blocks the operation before the tool executes and that the denied attempt is recorded.
- External action: Have an agent prepare an email or transaction that requires approval before sending or committing. Verify the reviewer’s context, the pending state, denial behavior, timeout path, and resulting audit record.
- Prompt injection through a tool result: Put an adversarial instruction in retrieved content and test whether the agent can exceed its intended actions. Record the tool sequence and how policy responded. OWASP identifies direct and indirect prompt injection as possible triggers for excessive agency.
- Change regression: Change the model, prompt, connector, or policy, then rerun the same tests. Check that results are tied to the relevant versions and that changed behavior is visible.
How do I compare AI governance platforms?
Use one scorecard for every candidate. Ask for demonstrated behavior or inspectable evidence for each axis, rather than awarding credit for an unsupported feature statement.
| Evaluation area | Evidence to request |
|---|---|
| Discovery and inventory | Coverage of observed versus declared agents, tools, models, owners, and use cases. |
| Action controls | A demonstrated allow, deny, pause, approval, or quarantine decision before a tool action. |
| Identity and permissions | Per-agent or per-task identities, least privilege, credential scope, and revocation behavior. |
| Human oversight | Approval context, review timing, denial and timeout behavior, and an escalation record. |
| Evaluation and monitoring | Reproducible tests, risk metrics, change-triggered evaluation, and incident tracking. |
| Audit evidence | Trace contents, integrity, retention, export, and access controls. |
| Framework support | Exact versions, clause mappings, linked evidence, update process, and customer responsibilities. |
| Operational fit | Integrations, deployment, data handling, reliability, administration, and support. |
Airia, Veilfire, and UiPath describe overlapping governance or audit capabilities. Those descriptions can suggest questions for a demonstration, but they are not a comparative ranking or independent validation. Veilfire describes runtime enforcement, identity, evaluations, human review, cryptographic audit records, and integrations with LangChain, LangGraph, OpenAI, Anthropic, and OpenRouter; its latency and performance figures are vendor claims, not independently measured results here. Airia describes discovery of AI tools, models, agents, and MCP servers, execution-layer controls, and framework-mapped documentation. Ask each vendor to demonstrate the claimed coverage and enforcement in your specific setup.
Does an AI governance platform make us compliant?
No. A platform can support controls, monitoring, documentation, and evidence collection, but compliance depends on the applicable requirements, your organization’s role, the system’s intended use, and how controls operate in practice. Verify framework versions and evidence provenance, identify customer-owned responsibilities, and have the appropriate legal or compliance owners determine applicability. A NIST or ISO mapping and a vendor’s certification or product claim should be treated as inputs to diligence, not as a compliance guarantee.
