Trust an AI agent only for the specific task, data, and permissions you have assessed—not because it is called an “agent” or performs well in a demo. Start with what it can access, what it can change, and how costly a mistake would be. Limit its permissions, test it on realistic and adversarial cases, and require your approval before consequential actions.

Start with the consequences of the task

An AI agent can plan a sequence of steps and use connected tools to carry them out. That makes its risk depend on more than the model’s answers: the connected accounts, information it can read, available tools, application controls, and your task all matter. NIST notes that users need visibility into an agent’s reasoning, tool use, and gathered evidence to understand how it reached a decision (NIST: Building Evaluation Probes into Agentic AI).

Assess the possible harm before granting access. Organizing a draft is not equivalent to sending an email, sharing private files, changing account settings, deleting data, or moving money. Consider both the sensitivity of the information and whether an action affects someone outside your account. Anthropic likewise emphasizes that data access and stakes vary by context (Anthropic: Trustworthy agents in practice).

  • What can it read? Identify the specific mailboxes, files, calendars, contacts, and account information it can access.
  • What can it do? Check whether it can draft, send, edit, delete, share, purchase, change settings, or invite other users.
  • What happens if it misunderstands? Consider whether you can undo the result and whether a mistake could expose private information, cause financial loss, or disrupt an account.

Check permissions and approval controls

Grant only the access the task requires. Prefer access limited to the relevant account, folder, or action, and check whether you can pause the agent or revoke access. A broad permission granted for convenience can turn a small misunderstanding into a much larger problem.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

For consequential actions, look for a control that separates the agent’s proposal from execution: the agent can prepare an action, but a policy or execution layer checks its scope and approval before carrying it out. OWASP recommends step-up authentication for critical actions such as payments, account recovery, privilege changes, and bulk deletion (OWASP: Agentic AI threats and mitigations). A confirmation prompt is useful only if it clearly identifies what will happen and lets you decline.

Compare agents on practical safeguards

When choosing between services, compare the controls that determine what an agent can access, how it behaves, and whether you can inspect its actions. Check the current product documentation for the exact plan and configuration you intend to use.

What to compare What to look for
Permission granularity Access limited to the accounts, data, and actions needed for the task.
Privacy and retention Clear disclosures about how connected data is used and retained.
Pause and revocation A way to stop the agent or remove its access without relying on the agent itself.
Confirmation boundaries Explicit approval before external, sensitive, or hard-to-reverse actions.
Activity history Records of data accessed, tools called, actions taken, and evidence used.
Evaluation evidence Tests whose tasks and conditions resemble your intended use, including difficult cases.

Test it before relying on it

Do not judge an agent only on a smooth, ordinary request. Test the configuration you will actually use, with representative work and realistic limits. NIST’s ARIA pilot distinguishes model testing, red teaming, and field testing as different assessment levels; its 2025 pilot involved five organizations and seven AI applications, figures that describe the pilot’s participation rather than agent performance generally (NIST: Assessing Risks and Impacts of AI (ARIA)).

  1. Try a normal task. Use a low-impact example similar to your real work and inspect what information the agent accesses and which tools it uses.
  2. Make the instruction ambiguous. See whether it asks a useful clarifying question rather than guessing about recipients, files, dates, or intended changes.
  3. Include misleading or hostile input. Test whether it follows your task boundaries when content it encounters urges it to disclose information or take unrelated actions.
  4. Ask for something outside scope. Check whether it refuses, seeks approval, or proceeds using permissions it should not need for the task.
  5. Test the confirmation boundary. Verify that it does not send, share, delete, purchase, or change settings before you approve the specific action.

Review what happened, not just the final explanation. NIST’s evaluation-probe work describes checking whether sources support claims, whether important context is missing, and whether evidence is sufficient. A good test should reveal whether the agent handles uncertainty and scope limits appropriately, not merely whether it completes the happy path.

Inspect the activity history and evidence

Look for an activity history that lets you see what data the agent accessed, which tools it used, what actions it took, and what evidence informed its answer. This gives you a way to check whether its account of a task matches the recorded steps. A polished explanation alone does not establish that an action happened as described. NIST frames its probe work around a machine-readable audit trail connecting decisions and outputs to evidence (NIST: Building Evaluation Probes into Agentic AI).

Read benchmark scores in context

A benchmark result is evidence about a named system under a particular test design and set of conditions—not a promise about every task or configuration. OpenAI’s Deployment Safety Hub reports ChatGPT Agent scores of 98.5% on a privacy-invasion evaluation and 89.0% on a high-stakes financial-activities evaluation. Those figures apply to those specific tests; they are not a ranking across agents or a guarantee that the agent is safe for your personal tasks (OpenAI Deployment Safety Hub).

Make a limited first-use plan

There is no universal pass score or checklist threshold that proves an AI agent is safe for every personal task. NIST’s work on evaluation probes and agent standards is ongoing, and OpenAI’s governance paper identifies operational questions that still need attention (OpenAI: Practices for Governing Agentic AI Systems; NIST: Building Evaluation Probes into Agentic AI).
