Evaluate AI-generated video on separate dimensions: whether it follows the prompt, how its frames look, how well images and motion hold together over time, and whether actions and interactions make sense. Use the same prompts and generation conditions when comparing systems, and combine automated measures with human review. A single average can conceal a failure that matters to your project.
1. Define the task and fix your prompt set
Start by writing down what the clip must accomplish. Identify the subject, action, setting, style, spatial relationships, colors, and any continuity or identity constraints that matter. Then create a fixed prompt set for every system you plan to compare, retaining the exact prompts and generation settings.
Include both simple prompts and prompts with several interacting requirements. This helps expose whether a generator can handle more than one instruction at a time. Benchmark suites use varied prompts and capabilities, but they do not establish one universal testing protocol; tailor the set to your intended use. 2. Check prompt and condition alignment
Judge whether the clip depicts what was requested, not merely whether it looks attractive. Check that required subjects and objects appear, perform the right actions, and have the specified attributes and relationships. Note omissions, substitutions, incorrect colors or quantities, and contradictions between clauses.

Keep this score separate from visual quality. Video-Bench explicitly distinguishes video-condition alignment from the quality of the generated video, with checks that include objects, actions, colors, scenes, and overall video-text consistency (CVPR 2025 paper).
3. Inspect frame quality and aesthetics
Watch the full clip, then inspect representative frames at the beginning, middle, end, and during important actions. Look for blur, noise, distortion, overexposure, malformed details, and sudden changes in image quality. Separately judge composition, visual harmony, and coherence: technical clarity and aesthetic appeal are not the same thing.

Video-Bench treats imaging quality and aesthetic quality as distinct dimensions (CVPR 2025 paper). A crisp frame alone says little about how the clip behaves over time.
4. Evaluate temporal consistency and motion separately
As the clip plays, watch for subject or background drift, flicker, jitter, sudden shape changes, and discontinuities. Then ask a different question: is the requested movement actually visible, and does it look smooth and plausible? A clip can remain visually stable because almost nothing moves, yet fail a prompt that calls for action.

VBench distinguishes subject and background consistency, temporal flicker, motion smoothness, and degree of dynamism. Its authors note that static video can do well on some temporal dimensions while lacking motion (VBench paper PDF). This is why consistency and motion adequacy deserve separate checks.
5. Add realism checks where the use case demands them
For human-centered, instructional, or realism-sensitive clips, inspect details beyond visual polish:

- Anatomy and human fidelity: Look for malformed bodies, faces, or movements.
- Physics and object integrity: Check whether objects keep their form and interact in believable ways.
- Cause and effect: Verify that actions produce plausible consequences and occur in a sensible order.
- Commonsense and continuity: Check whether relationships and important details persist through multi-part actions.
VBench-2.0 extends evaluation beyond basic quality and prompt adherence. Its authors describe five broad categories—Human Fidelity, Controllability, Creativity, Physics, and Commonsense—broken into 18 fine-grained capability dimensions. The paper also identifies complex plots and unstable commonsense reasoning as continuing challenges in the models it evaluated (VBench-2.0, posted March 27, 2025).

Use a short rubric with one score and a brief evidence note for each relevant dimension. For example, record whether an object was missing or a subject’s appearance changed, rather than writing only “good” or “bad.” Mark requirements that are essential to the task—such as a specific action or identity continuity—as must-pass checks. A strong average should not erase a failure on one of those requirements.

Automated metrics can help diagnose differences, but they are not a substitute for watching the clips and judging their task fit. VBench reports that “Existing metrics do not fully align with human perceptions” (VBench, CVPR 2024). VBench-2.0 describes human-preference annotation as a check on alignment between its evaluation and human judgment (VBench-2.0). When automated scores and reviewers disagree, inspect the specific clips and the dimension being scored.
7. Compare results fairly
Apply the same prompt set, rubric, and generation conditions to each system. Keep the dimensions visible rather than collapsing everything into one score:
- Prompt fidelity: Required subjects, actions, attributes, and relationships appear.
- Frame quality: Images are technically clear and visually coherent.
- Temporal behavior: Subjects and scenes remain consistent, with limited flicker and discontinuity.
- Motion adequacy: The requested movement is present and its dynamics are plausible.
- Realism and integrity: Physics, anatomy, objects, and commonsense meet the needs of the task.
- Human preference and task fit: Reviewers find the result useful for its intended purpose.
These comparison axes bring together dimensions used by VBench, EvalCrafter, Video-Bench, and VBench-2.0; the papers do not use a single shared scale. Their reported benchmark results apply to the prompts, models, and evaluation versions studied, not as timeless rankings of current commercial generators. The cited work supports multidimensional evaluation, but does not prescribe universal weights: prioritize the criteria your production task actually depends on.
