1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTo estimate a DEX trade, get a fresh quote for the exact network, token pair, direction and order size, then compare its expected output with a suitable reference price. Requote at larger sizes to see how execution deteriorates, and include pool fees, route costs and gas in the comparison. Set the transaction’s minimum output or maximum input to a loss limit you can accept. A quote is a snapshot, not a guaranteed fill.
Price impact and slippage are different costs
Price impact comes from your order
Price impact is the change in price caused by the proposed trade itself. In general, a larger order relative to the liquidity available along its route moves farther through the pool’s pricing curve and receives a less favorable effective price.
Slippage is movement while the transaction is pending
In Uniswap’s terminology, slippage is the price movement between the quote or submission and execution. Other trades can change market conditions during that interval. Slippage tolerance is the amount of execution movement you allow beyond the quoted trade; it does not remove price impact already reflected in the quote.
Fees and gas are separate
Evaluate the quoted output alongside pool or protocol fees, any route-specific charges, and the network cost. Interfaces may calculate or label price impact differently, including whether their displayed figure accounts for fees. Check the interface’s definition rather than assuming the number is an all-in cost.

Estimate a trade with a repeatable quote process
- Fix the comparison. Record the network, token addresses, trade direction, exact-input or exact-output mode, and quote time. Keep these the same for every candidate size; a different pool or route can return a different result for the same pair.
- Quote the intended size. Record the input, expected output, route, fee assumptions and estimated gas. For an exact-input swap, note the minimum output. For an exact-output swap, note the maximum input.
- Choose a reference price. Compare the quote’s effective execution price with a contemporaneous reference on the same unit basis. Calculate effective execution price as output divided by input, accounting for each token’s decimals and units. A reference price helps reveal how far the quote differs from the price you consider fair.
- Measure expected price impact. Use the interface’s estimate if available, or compare the quoted output with the amount implied by your reference price. Note whether the displayed estimate includes fees.
- Requote in progressively larger increments. Track expected output for each size and how much output changes for each additional unit of input. If the marginal result worsens sharply, the next increment is reaching less favorable liquidity. This is a sizing aid, not a prediction of the final execution.
- Compare complete routes. For the same size, compare expected output after route and pool fees, gas and execution constraints. A split route or a path through multiple pools may differ from an estimate based on one pool’s reserves.
- Set the execution bound. Choose the minimum output or maximum input that reflects the worst result you are willing to accept. If the market moves beyond that bound, the transaction should revert rather than execute outside it.
- Refresh before signing. Recheck the quote and transaction details close to execution. Liquidity and quoted output can change, and a displayed quote cannot guarantee the price when a transaction is included in a block.
What to record when comparing sizes or routes
Use the same comparison basis for every candidate. These fields help distinguish a genuinely better execution from a quote that only looks better before costs or transaction limits are considered.
| Field | What to check |
|---|---|
| Expected output and effective price | Compare the output for the same input and calculate output per input with token units and decimals handled correctly. |
| Price-impact estimate | Record the interface’s estimate and whether its definition includes fees. |
| Fees and gas | Include pool or protocol fees, route-specific charges and estimated network cost; gas can be significant relative to a small trade. |
| Route and supporting liquidity | Note the pools used and whether liquidity is available around the prices the trade is expected to traverse. |
| Execution bound | Record minimum output for exact-input swaps or maximum input for exact-output swaps, plus the tolerance used to set that bound. |
| Quote time | Note when the quote was fetched. The longer conditions can change before inclusion, the less reliable it is as an execution estimate. |
Why reserve ratios and total liquidity can mislead
Constant-product pools: a useful intuition, not a full quote
For a constant-product pool with input reserve x, output reserve y and input amount dx, the invariant is x · y = k. Ignoring fees, after the input enters the pool, its output reserve is k/(x + dx), so the amount returned is:

dy = y − k/(x + dx) = y · dx/(x + dx)
The output is therefore not simply the input multiplied by the starting reserve ratio: the trade changes that ratio as it executes. This equation illustrates a v2-style constant-product pool. An actual quote also depends on fees, integer arithmetic and implementation details, so use the protocol’s current quote for the transaction you are considering.
Exact-input and exact-output quotes answer different questions. An exact-input quote calculates output for a fixed input; an exact-output quote calculates the input required to receive a fixed output. Uniswap v2 documentation also warns that relying only on current pool reserves, without an external fair-price reference, can expose a swap to front-running.

Concentrated liquidity: depth depends on price
In concentrated-liquidity designs such as Uniswap v3 and v4, liquidity providers choose price intervals. A swap uses liquidity active around the current price and may cross ticks into other liquidity. Consequently, total value locked alone does not show how much liquidity is available at the specific price levels a trade will cross. Uniswap Developers notes that price impact for a given swap size varies with liquidity available at the prices the swap traverses; more liquidity at those prices generally means lower impact for that size.
Use quoted examples carefully
Uniswap Developers gives an illustrative v2 DAI/USDC example in which approximately 0.50% of total available capital is used for trading between $0.99 and $1.01. The page does not state a publication year, and the figure is a protocol explanation, not a current measurement of a live pool or a typical slippage rate. Official documentation does not establish a general empirical slippage value that applies across DEXs, pairs, chains or trade sizes.

How to choose a tolerable execution bound
For an exact-input swap, minimum output is the least output the transaction will accept. For an exact-output swap, maximum input is the most it will spend. These bounds protect against execution worse than the permitted limit while a transaction is pending.
- A tighter bound rejects more adverse movement but can cause a revert if the market changes before execution.
- A wider bound is less likely to revert for a given amount of movement, but allows a worse execution within the bound.
- Choose the bound from the loss you are actually prepared to accept, not from an assumption that one tolerance percentage is safe for every trade.
Pool depth, route, fees, gas and market conditions vary by protocol, chain, pair and time. No single trade size or slippage tolerance is universally safe, and no quote guarantees a final fill.
